Timing of Probiotics While Taking Antibiotics

My daughter just started taking antibiotics for a double ear infection. We take probiotics every day but haven't had a reason for anitbiotics in a long time. I know they shouldn't be taken together but, I don't how far apart she should take them. She gets up around 7 but doesn't eat until 8, and doesn't take her antibiotic until after she eats. Can she take her probiotic as soon as she gets up (like usual) at 7:00 and be alright to take the antibiotic at 8:30?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies. Linda L, I also heard from a Dr. that the best time to take it is 60 to 90 minutes AFTER taking antibiotics.
Everyone in our family has taken probiotics, in some form or another, for 3 years now, and we haven't needed antibiotics since we started. This is her first ear infection in at least 5 years, all thanks to her refusal to blow her nose or take her allergy medicine.

Hi N.,

They should be taken as far apart as possible. For example, if she is taking the antibiotics every 8 hours then the probiotic should be taken 4 hours after the antibiotic.

Check into Chiropractic care for the ear infection. My daughter stopped having them as soon as the chiropractor started treating her. Hers were bad enough, and often enough, that the doctor wanted to put tubes in her ears and we were able to dodge it with chiropractic care.

God bless,

M.

My daughter took culturelle when she was on an antibiotic because it would give her a bad diaper rash. I usually gave it to her at night, but never really paid any attention to how close/far apart it was to giving the antibiotic. The doctor also didn't emphasize it being a problem either. She should be, but maybe check with your own doctor to be sure. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you talked to your doc, but just FYI, if you take a yeast-based probiotic (like Florastor Kids) you can take it with your antibiotic - they won't counteract eachother. :)

This is a question much better asked of a pharmacist who understands the pharmacology of the antibiotic and can research the probiotic vs. us.

All antibiotics work differently, so a pharmacist can tell you the precautions of each (such as taking with food vs. not, etc).

It can take several days for an antibiotic to reach its steady state. So, instead of trusting our non-expert opinions, I'd call and ask the pharmacist to help you make the best decision.

Just like people who take certain blood pressure medications can't drink grapefruit juice. Who would have known? Best to ask.

My pharmacist told me to take my probiotic on an empty stomach, and to drink non-chlorinated water with it. The chlorine kills the micro-organisms. She said don't eat for at least two hours before or one hour after taking the probiotic.

I've never heard that they shouldn't be taken together. My son gets his antibiotic right now twice a day and his probiotic at the same time. He hasn't had an issue yet.

For the ear infections, have you tried using garlic oil or cleaning the ears by dropping hydrogen peroxide in each ear till they stop bubbling?

Hi N.! My doctor, pharmacist and chiropractor all said the same thing.....to take the probiotic BEFORE the antibiotic dose. They recommended an hour or two prior to the antibiotic dose.
So, the time frame you asked about should be perfect!
Good luck!
