Thyroid Issues and Conception

My friend has been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. She has been treating it through medication with the hopes of avoiding the radioactive iodine treatment. After one year of drug therapy, her doctor took her off the meds, but it seems that her thyroid is already starting to climb again. Now she is worried about trying to have a baby. Has anyone done the radioactive iodine test? And, has anyone had a baby after this process? Any info would be helpful!

What can I do next?

Has your friend only done drug therapy?? It very RARELY ever works. Her entire body is sluggish from toxins and pollutants. It all starts with the liver and progresses to other organs and glands.

If she would like more information on how to correct her body naturally please let me know. She is extremely acidic as well.

ALL of it can be correct thru proper nutrition and a detox. If she introduces the radioactive iodine into her body it makes the body even more toxic and the body will harbor those toxins and if she tries to conceive and succeeds the baby is exposed to that.

I am not trying to scare you or her by any means!! There is a simpler, more healthy way to achieve optimal health!!

Yes, I did have my thyroid removed and had radioactive iodine treatment. I had NO problems getting pregnant afterwards. As I understand it from hearing TONS of other "horror" stories about about uncontrollable thyroids and issues getting pregnant. As I heard (from a nurse after my thyroidectomy) it was better for me in the long run to have the whole thing removed because then you have ZERO thyroid hormones. It's easier to control going up from zero then it is one that is up, then down, then up, etc. Hence the problems getting pregnant.

I would NEVER tell anyone how to treat their own health. I can only tell you what I did, based on my own condition. I don't know what solution would work for your friend. My only suggestion would be to try to deal with one problem at a time...don't stress herself out about not getting pregnant in the future. Of course, she should talk about this with her doctor and discuss her options and BEST future plans. Right now she needs to take care of herself and get herself healthy.

I realize this sounds "easy to say" coming from someone who WAS able to have kids. But I had to learn this when I too was not healthy. I was told that radioactive iodine treatments could increase breast cancer risks in the future. When I consulted MY doctor and radiologist about this they said, for your situation, we need to do the radioactive iodine treatment. That will keep you alive now (from thyroid cancer). We can't predict what's going to happen in the future, breast cancer, hit by a bus, etc. so our goal is to treat this the best way we know how NOW. Not exactly the answer I was looking for, however I am active, healthy, have wonderful children and NO breast health issues.

No decision is easy. The best she can do is be armed with the latest information, all the options for HER situation and be willing to live with whatever decision she makes.

I hope this helps. Feel free to have her e-mail me.

I had radioactive iodine 3 years ago for an node on my thyroid that was overactive. I had no problems other than my 2 yonger daughters being freaked out that they could not touch me for 3 days, LOL. I can not answer to the conception part as I was 46 and done having kids. Prior to the treatment my periods were 2 1/2 days and very light, that is symptomatic of over active thyroid. After, my cycle went back to what I would say is normal 5- 7 days light then heavy then light again at the end. I have not heard of it affecting conception and as it returned my cycle to normal possibly she will have an easier time conceiving. Not sure. I have no regrets other than the 24 lbs I gained after :( but I was very skinny before.

I had thyroid cancer and had my thyroid removed. However, I had trouble staying pregnant (I could get pregnant but never was able to keep them). I read that having anti-thyroid antibodies raises your chance of miscarriage 50%. So I asked my cancer doc if I had the ATAB and he said yes.

We ended up adopting and are parents to a wonderful little four year old.

She should get tested for that (it is also called hasimoto's).

Hi A.. Has she ever researched any natural alternatives? I think I would try that first. Im 38 and have had some hormonal issues, one of them being the thyroid,I reallys didnt have the typical gain weight lose weight symptoms that you see alot with thyroid issues but the pms was horrible. I had some extensive blood testing done thru a company caled Your Future Health. I found out that my thyroid nimbers are off along with some other things and by body is lacking in certain vitamins and minerals. Im taking some things that they reccommended and it is helping my pms! Im not saying that her's is due to the same thing, but I do think that when our bodys are depleted of nutrients it causes things to go wrong.Im not a Dr and there are lots of things that can cause imbalances, but im saying I would research some natural things and mabe get an opinion from a dr that studies natural alternatives. Just my opinion,I wish your friend the best of luck! Take care,
S.
