Thyroid Biopsy - Tell Me It's Going to Be No Big Deal

My husband is having a biopsy on a thyroid nodule this afternoon. We have been reading online all about these things and have found several things. First, that these have a low (about 20%) chance of being cancer. But we also saw that men are more like to have the cancer than women. I am really worried about this. Have any of the men in your lives had a thyroid biopsy and how did it turn out? And how long does it typically take to get the results?

What can I do next?

Not a man, but I have had three biopsies done on thyroid nodules over the span of six years. They have always come back normal/inconclusive

Having nodules on your thyroid is actually very common, and we just never know they are there. The only reason they found mine was because my regular doctor thought my thyroid felt "full" so they sent me for an ultra sound.

I actually have two thyroid tumors. One is 3.3 CM the other 1.4, they grow every year.

If they give you the option do the fine needle biopsy. It is over in like five minutes, not even kidding. The core biopsy took about half an hour and was by far more painful, and still came back inconclusive.

He will be sore for a couple days, but then should be fine.

I'm a woman, but I had a biopsy on my thyroid nodules when I was in my late 20's... it was not cancer. I ended up with a partial thyroidectomy in 1999. I've been fine ever since.

My results came back quickly as I recall - I'd say 2-3 days. It was uncomfortable, but not painful.

I had a thyroid biopsy done in early 2005, they found the cancer cells and took half my thyroid out by April. The biopsy itself is uncomfortable, but not intolerable. I think it only took a week or two to get the results if that.

As my doctor told me, if you have to have cancer this is the one to have.
Cure rate is like 95% or above. Take one step at a time. Thyroid nodules
are very common. Try to relax.

My grandmother had thyroid cancer (back in the 1970s), and she recovered fully. They removed it, and she went through radiation (can't remember if she also had chemo). You'd never want to hear "cancer" as a diagnosis, but there is a lot of success in treating this. Wishing the best for your hubby and you!

Patty K is right. My dad had nodules when I was younger; can't remember if they were pre-cancerous or benign...anyway, he had them out and is 100% fine--twenty years later, no recurrence. Hope that helps : )
