Three Months Post Partum and Still Bleeding

I have a question. I had complicated vaginal delivery and recovery three months ago this week. During the delivery (it was a VBAC) I had a small rupture of the uterus. Now, three months later I am still bleeding. I have called the doctor a number of times, but keep getting told that it is normal to bleed up to a month and then 2 months and then 12 weeks. All of those have passed now. The bleeding is not heavy at all and almost all of it is a dark browish color, but it is there and it is steady. I did the same thing with my son and ended up having to have a D&C because I developed a blood clot. What is your opinion; should I continue to wait or should I call again? I am getting tired of being made to feel like I am worrying about nothing, when I feel like this may be another clot. Thanks for the advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had the D&C today. Everything went well, the doc said that there was a lot of bleeding and I am on bedrest for the next 48 hours. Hopefully after that all will heal up quickly and completely. I spoke with my cousin, who is an anethesiologist, he said that I could safely go ahead and breastfeed again right away. Which is good because she totally freaked out about taking a bottle, wouldn't have anything to do with it!
Thanks for your thoughts and advice!

Call them again and if they still dismiss it, then I suggest getting a second opinion, especially since you had complications before. good luck, I hope it's nothing!

I would make an apt and go back to him so I could talk face to face. I would say .... "Look you told me a month, then 2 months, then 12 weeks... not all of that has past and I am still bleeding and last time this happened I had to have a d & c and developed a blood clot, now I want to know what is going on and is this normal?"
I think that you are going to have to get firm with him.

If you still don't get satisfaction, then I would find another dr.

I feel your pain! My daughter will be four months old on Thursday and I am going through the same thing. I saw my doctor on Monday and she said that it could be several things. It could either be that my birth control pills aren't strong enough or that I still have a little of the placenta attached to the wall of my uterus and if so than my body is just trying to get it out by shedding all the time which is causing the bleeding. My doctor checked to make sure there was no infection and that I wasn't anemic from all the blood loss. She set up an ultrasound to check for any left over placenta and if we find anything then I will have to have a D&C otherwise I will continue to bleed. She said it could take up to a year for all of the left over placenta to come out.

I know how frustrating this can be and if your doctor isn't concerned you might think of going somewhere else! I got to Cape Care for Women and see Christy Cook. They have always taken the time to double check and make sure things are fine, even when I am worried over nothing! Good Luck~ J.

I am a nurse and worked OB/GYN 2 yrs ago for 5 yrs. I have 2 young children of my own and would recommend you make an appt to see your Dr. or find another one. This is not normal. Normal bleeding last about 4-6 weeks. If it is continuous since birth you might have something going on. Hope this helps and I hope you get the help you need.

If you are uncomfortable with the answer you've been receiving from your OB, seek a second opinion. Call your insurance company, many of them will cover a second opinion visit with another provider.

I would find a diff dr and go get a diff opinion. dark brownish blood is old blood but i know that bleeding that long can cause major problems and even drain your body of blood and you could die from it. I was told after dd that if I bled after 6 weeks to come in and have already been told that after this one arrives anything past 6 weeks to get to my dr or ER.

Trust your instinct and get a second opinion asap, especially since you had complications. You need to stay healthy for your baby and son. Call the dr. now for an appt. (either your current one or a new one that is recommended by someone you trust.)

Actually, this is going to sound really strange, but that is fairly normal for redheads, so if you have red hair, don't worry about it too much, but still let your Dr. know. If you don't have red hair, that's not likely to be a normal thing, so I would definitely insist on being seen by the Dr.

I would definitely call another doctor to get a second opinion. This is your body and you know when something is not right. The brown blood is old blood and does mean that you are healing. Good luck.

It is common to have lochia for up to 6 weeks, and some women will have that, then a period right away. Twelve weeks of bleeding, no matter how slight is NOT normal though. Call again! You could be anemic, you could have a bit of a retained placenta, etc. This should be checked out. I would also insist on talking to the Dr., not just the receptionist.

Is this the same doctor as with the first baby. If so, the doctor should know your history and act accordingly. If it's a different doctor, I would suggest finding a new one. I hope everything turns out ok. keep us posted.

I had c-section in August and was bleeding three months after that. I insisted that they check everything out. The dr that did my c-section had left the after birth in there. I would seek some one who would listen, because three months of bleeding means that something is going on.

Go back to the doctor. Do not delay. Just make an appointment to see him. Don't just settle for the receptionist or nurse's opinion. This could be something serious that needs to be addressed by a doctor, in person.
