Hi Moms!

I am in the process of opening my own family day care in contra costa county. Currently seeking appropriate housing that will suit my needs to provide the best at home environment for the children I care for.

My question is....would you avoid a family day care that was out of an apartment/townhome then a family day care that is a home with a backyard? What are your feelings/thoughts on a day care out of an apartment home?

Trying to keep my over head low so I can offer affordable daycare for the families who come into my care. But I don't want to sacraifice a suitable home situation if I don't have too. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I got a license in the early 80s in Contra Costa county (nice people to work with) for day care in my home which was the next to the end unit in a town house with a very small front yard and tiny enclosed patio leading to the garage in back. There was a large green area across the road (used only by the people who lived there so very little traffic)
I actually didn't use it for all day care but had a little co-op play school for 2 year olds where one parent stayed and helped and the moms took turns. I didn't have young children at the time, my five were all grown. I think if you
offer quality care and there are opportunities for the children to run and get fresh air safely, you should do well. The licensing people can give you an idea of how much care is available where you live and what you need to provide.

Good luck to you and the little ones you care for!!

I searched many family day cares for my daughter and found that the larger and cleaner the space, the better for her and peace of mind for me. As a small child, they love to explore, be independent and sometimes require space to do it. Having age appropriate activities and surface for them to create is also important for me. An outside backyard for running around and getting some vitamin D is also important. Good luck with you search!

My daughter is currently in a family daycare. When we were looking, regular access to outdoor space was near the top of our list. I think all families have different priorities.

When I was looking for daycare, my first choice was a family daycare in a small apartment. The physical size wasn't as much of an issue for me; I was looking for someone who would be nurturing and attentive and had a good understanding of her developmental needs. A small space meant they could take less kids and therefore pay more attention to each child. They were also near a park and went as much as possible. Every family is looking for something different, but I think if you provide a nurturing, creative and safe environment for the kids, you will get clients regardless of the size of your space.
