Don't know too much about activities, but I would highly recommend Rudy's for BBQ, just off of 35E in Denton, it's really good, especially their BBQ baked potatoes!
Hi all
We are moving to Denton in July. This week we are bringing our 4 kids (8, 11, 12, 14) to visit their new schools, house, etc. I am hoping someone has some suggestions of things that are open this time of year - fun family things. I have heard that Stockyard Station is a fun trip......Galleria Dallas - for the girls?..... horse back riding trails?..... which Zoo? Aquarium? In door stuff in case the weather isn't great? Outdoor stuff in case it is. Neat restuarants? Great BBQ? We will be staying in Denton - but on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - we plan to take day trips. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks so much.
K.

Not sure to tell you where to go but do want to warn that traffic on 35W coming south out of Denton to Fort Worth will be very congested due to the races at Texas Motor Speedway. (also someone could have told me.... 35 splits at Denton 35 W goes through Fort Worth 35 E goes through Dallas then they merge back south of the Metroplex.... gets a little confusing lol)
I have lived in Denton for 18 years. It's a nice place. There are several great neighborhoods near the schools. The Fort Worth zoo is the best but if you want a smaller one, the Frank Buck zoo in Gainesville is good. If you like mexican food without going to the chain places, there is El Guapo's on Elm St (or Locust - it sits between the 2 and they are each one way) or Mazatlan on University Drive next to University Lanes bowling center. Grapevine is an interesing town and they have a large mall also. Each year (May and September) they have 2 street festivals with a lot of kids activities. If you like baseball, the Fort Worth Cats or Frisco Roughriders are great to see - smaller stadiums, closer to the players and can even get autographs. Hope this helps and good luck in your move.
Welcome to Denton!! The Fort Worth Zoo is great! Wednesday is half price day. Smokehouse bbq off of Fort worth dr/i35 is really good and you get large portions and its inexpensive!!
Just to warn you this weekend is race week so if you travel south on 35 towards Fort Worth expect lots of traffic! This would probably be a good time to stay in Denton or go to Dallas.
There is also the water park in Denton off of Loop 288/fm 428 it has an indoor pool and Friday night is buy 1 get 1 free.
Have fun!!
Hi K. -
We have lived in Denton for a little over a year now and we are constantly looking for kid-friendly things to do as well.
We do a lot in Flower Mound and Lewisville, Shops at Highland Village, etc.. There is another really good website that I do not see mentioned here www.burbmom.net - check out their resource page http://www.burbmom.net/resources-for-moms-in-dfw/
Best of luck to you - if you find something you like please share.
Hi K.!
First of all, welcome to Denton! Please consider calling me for all things you want to know about Denton. I am a huge proponent of locally owned businesses and restauraunts. Try not to cram too much into one weekend visit this time around. It's already starting to warm up during the day but it's beautiful out there so I would suggest outdoor activities for sure. If you have time to do the horseback riding I say go for it-better now than August trust me. FW Zoo is much nicer than Dallas, but the Dallas Aquarium is amazing (pricey though). For BBQ, honestly I would stick to Rudy's. Even though it's a chain you'll love it. Ours is a locally owned franchise I believe. There is a great cajun place called Frilly's. Double Daves is a good family pizza place. There are some great shops around the Denton Square and this is the perfect time of year to enjoy that. JJ pizza on the sqaure along with the Hydrant coffee shop just off the square are good stops for food too. Just south of the sqaure there are some fun restaurants like Roosters and Fuzzy's Taco Shop-very loud and family friendly. Locally owned. ____@____.com if you want a tour guide while you're here!
If you go to the DallasChild.com or guidelive.com you will be able to find lots of things to do in the whole area.
Six Flags - Friday Night is Family Night - $25 admission
Scarborough RenFest - Weekends through May 31
Sharkarosa Wildlife Ranch Pilot Point
Billy Bob's Fort Worth - they have family line dancing on Thursday nights; lots of great memorabilia from celebrities, too.
Dallas World Aquarium is very cool... like a rainforest mixed with an aquarium.
Dallas and Fort Worth both have good zoos. There's also a small zoo in Gainesville (north of Denton) called Frank Buck Zoo.
www.FamilyeGuide.com is based out of the Flower Mound/Lewisville, and focuses on family activities based in that area, but offer a lot of ideas for the surrounding communities as well.
The weekly newsletter has all of the information about date specific activities (like Family Fun night at Six Flags). You can download it here: http://familyeguide.com/Newsletters.html. There will be a new newsletter that comes out on Wednesday, detailing activities for 4/16-4/22.
You can find lots of links to other area attraction listed above at: http://familyeguide.com/DFW-Attractions.html
There are also lots of places that offer tours to the public (Ballpark in Arlington, U.S. Treasury, new Texas Stadium, etc.). A guide to local tours can be found here: http://familyeguide.com/Tour-Guide.html
Check out the website. You'll find lots of other ideas as well.
Good luck! And welcome to Denton!
Ya'll forgot to tell her that there is a skate park next to Water Works (Denton's own water park). Also there is a great new fish & chips place! The Angry Friar is a green double decker bus at the end of Fry St. on the UNT campus. (Opens at 7:30pm) Perfect for a cheap fun dinner when you are driving around Denton. They got everything else right. Ft. Worth Zoo, Dallas aquarium, Smokehouse BBQ, Mazatlan for mexican food, and watch out for the race traffic. Hope you love it as much as we do!
Hi, and welcome to Denton!! We came here for a job 7 years ago, thinking it would only be a temporary move... well, we are still here! Denton is a great, laid back kind of place. I have an 8 & 10 year old... which neighborhood/school will yours be at? If you are here at the end of April, don't miss the Jazz Festival!!
