Therapist Recommendation St. Paul

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good family therapist in the St. Paul area. My husband has finally agreed to start talking to someone about his depressive behaviors. The reason I request a family therapist is because while he will start going alone I wonder if we will sometimes need to go together. I need someone who is not stuffy and is easy going. My husband is not really accepting of the idea and I want to make sure he is comfortable from the beginning. He might be more comfortable discussing his problems with a male, but it isn't a requirement. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I would highly recommend Tim Johnson of Bachmann and Associates. He is very kind, compassionate and down to earth. His contact number is ###-###-####.

Hi J.-
Check with your insurance- they might make you use certain groups to pay expenses.
We've used a group called Alberg and Assoc.- Chuck Tracy.
They go to shoreview and woodbury.

I wish I had a specific recommendation for you, but having moved several times (and so gone "therapist shopping" several times) over the past few years, here's some general advice.

1. Check w/your insurance. It sucks to find someone you like and then find out they're not fully covered under your insurance. Let your insurance give you a list and start from there.

2. Shop a little bit. It sounds like your husband may be resistant to this idea, but it's as unrealistic to expect any random therapist to be the right fit as it is to expect a blind date to be your soul mate. It might work out that way, but chances are it won't. Perhaps just set the expectation with your husband that he is allowed to not like or not feel comfortable w/any given therapist - and to keep looking! He WILL find someone that is a good fit, it just might take three or four appointments. (Therapists are more than happy to have a "consultation" - some charge, some don't - because they know that the therapy won't be successful if it's not a good fit.)

3. Be patient. With your self, with your husband, with the therapy. It will take time, and there will be lulls and setbacks and even periods where it feels like it's not helping at all - but it WILL help.

You and your husband are brave and wise to tackle this head-on. Best of luck with this journey.

Dr. John Friel is a very understanding therapist. He is located at the Innsbrook Center in New Brighton. He has actually written a few books too. He has support groups. My husband went to see him for anger management issues. I only wish that I would have talked him into going many years ago!
Do yourself a huge favor and find his books to read even IF your husband doesn't see him. Good Luck!

Bachmann & Associates. It is a Christian-based counseling. I went there myself. I battled depression for two years, the counseling/therapy I received from Bachmann & Associates were really helpful. I'd strongly recommend it.

You might try contacting Ruth Markowitz on Portland Avenue in St. Paul. I see her for depression issues and like her directness. I don't know what her family therapy experience is, but if it's not something in her realm of services, she'll tell you and probably recommend some other therapists. And, I agree with the other posters, it's okay to shop around. Call them, go to an initial visit, go with your gut. I've moved a lot in the last five years, and I've always found great counselors, thankfully. But, there have been one or two "duds," who just weren't a match for me.

Steve Wiese is fantastic at the Center for Christian Psychological Services in Roseville. He is very down-to-earth and has a great sense of humor - I think he would quickly put anyone at ease. My husband was hesitant too before getting help for depression, but really enjoyed meeting with Steve. ###-###-####

My husband had the same sort of issues and we started out as a couple with Carol Wichers, who is in Minneapolis, but depending where you live in St Paul, she may not be that far. Coming from where I live in St Paul, I hop on 94, take 35WS and then get off right at 35th/36th street exit, so it isn't too far (20 mins). She was really able to work with my husband and life is way different and way better. She actually got through to him without him getting defensive and feeling like she was playing mind games. If you want her info, let me know. I really think highly of her! So does my husband (which for those who know him cannot believe, total redneck iron ranger.)
