So What Happened?

WOW!!!! Thk everybody for the response and wonderful impact. Gosh I'm shocked this website is the BOMB!!! If only I had found it earlier i bet life would have been soooo much smoother!!! But yeah I'll try the things that were suggested, which the grandparents do anyway, and see how things go. But my son is such a picky eater so I know he'll be harder to find foods for. And I had NO idea that it was time to get rid of the bottles!! WOW!! well again ladies thk u sooo much. I'm not much of a cook really being that I was in college right before having them and u know how college students eat. So i guess we will all learn new things together and see how it goes. I'm so excited for this next stage in our lives. THK U ALL AGAIN!!!

My 10 1/2 month old pretty much can eat anything that i eat, as long as it is in bite sized pieces. She loves peas, green beans, carrots (i buy the canned kind with no salt added) and just about any fruit you can think of. Also, you can try pieces of whole wheat lightly toasted bagels and cut up string cheese. For the last month or so, my daughter has really been refusing to eat baby food and loves to feed herself, so this works out best for us. Hope this helps!!

Pancakes, waffles, toast, and oatmeal. I don't offer syrup with pancakes and waffles because of the sugar--and the mess. Sometimes I'll give reduced sugar preserves, but mostly my son ate them plain at that age. I had a really hard time knowing what to feed my kids at that age, transitioning from bottle and baby food to table food. I think you've gotten a lot of good advice hear though. Oh, and Lunchables are good too.

Do they have teeth? Have you tried any soft solids like bite size carrots and things that you might find in gerber graduates? My kids are 7 & 10 so it's been awhile since I went through the baby stage but I would try some bite size things that they can chew easily. Cheerios, carrots, soft chunks of chicken or turkey. Just make sure they are tiny so they don't choke.

Hi my name is T. and I want to say that I'm not rich and I am glad you are a part of mama source. We all need advice from all types of families.
Well my son is 18 months old and he still eats baby food as well and we give him a meat..meat sticks etc..along with a fruit and veggie. whole bananas are great too. Gerber makes cereal bars that he just loves. also chicken tenders, we also make tuna helper with chicken instead of the tuna and he loves that as well, lets see really anything that you eat thats soft and can be broke up in small bits will work. potatoes are another favorite in my house.
I will suggest that you don't give your babies any corn, hot dogs, peanut butter ,pop corn or anything that hard to chew.
I sure hope this helps. good luck, T. D

Hey K.,

Your young ladies should be on regular food like what we eat. With meat start out shredding it, then once they get used to it, start giving them little bite sized pieces, like the size of a pea or so and eventually graduate them up. They can have noodles, fruits, veggies just like us....just make sure they have really small pieces at first or even mashed and messy until they get the hang of "big" people food. Make sure though you do not give them any peanut butter yet. Peanut butter cuz it's hard for them with all the stickiness to eat. Honey and Eggs can be given now, but just not too much. With honey they suggest that kids under six months of age do not eat it because it can sometimes contain the spore of Clostridium Botulinium(botulism) and can cause a rare form of food poisoning. Adults as well as children do have a chance getting it too. I didn't give my kids honey until they were 2 years old. It's also sugary and it ruins teeth.
With eggs, go ahead and scramble a couple eggs to give them and see how they like it. You can leave the yoke in or take it out, it's up to you. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, and if I do not know the answer, I will find out for you.

Hi, I have 3 kids and I'm only 29 and I know what is like when you have your first child. I can't imagine having two right off the bat. It has to be hard, but I may have a few suggestions for you. You could start with easy to chew things like green beans, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, applesauce, cooked baby carrots, saltine crackers. I would try any of those things and you should have sucess. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I used to be a stay at home mom but by no means was or am I rich. I went back to work after 6 1/2 years to get my sanity. My kids are 6 1/2, 4, and 2 1/2. We all struggle but you'll get through it.

When my daughter was 13 months well right around 9-12 months we started letting her eat what we were having just a more gound up edition. Say if for dinner we were having hamburger helper, mashed potatoes, and green beans, we would just let her have the same thing but it mushed it up for her until her teeth came in a little more. Hope that was some advice. Ive been there when there is no one else to ask and it is nice to just have some to give there opinion

Don't feel bad. I felt really weird joining this group too. Although I belong to a group called cafemom.com which is great! You should check it out. Meghan in 11 mths old and she love the little gradurate ravioli things. I also give her some table scraps she loves mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Meat I still give her as baby food because I don't know about giving her all of the seasonings I use.

I don't know how good you are at cooking. But you might want to try this website (wholesomebabyfood.com) This gives you recipies to use with solid food and lets you know how to mash it and grind it in a food processor so your baby can eat it. Unlike the baby food you buy at the stores that has just a little bit of the meat or fruit or vegetables and most of perservatives, this food is whole so it fills babies up easier. I have four children and all of them enjoyed these recipies, especially my last one who is fifteen months old now. Also, I had twins also, they are almost eight now and boys but I do remember them at a small age, it can get overwhelming. Just breathe and take a little bit at a time. You will be a great mommy.

K.,
I am a nurse but not working as I stay home with my little girl also. At 12 months they are able to eat table food. My little girl never like baby food and never would eat it. I was waisting my money so I just started feeding her real food at 7 or 8 months. I did it the same way babyfood is done. Ex. I would give her peas.... I wouls squish them up with my fork and feed it to her but not adding any extra salt or anything. At 12 months you can feed them whatever they will eat, but since all their teeth aren't in, you may have to give little bitty bits or squish it with your fork. My little girl will be 1 yr this week and she eats anything and everything we eat. Sometimes she doesn't eat but that is ok. If the table food doesn't fill them up, then give them a sippy cup sitting out all day long so they can grab it and drink it anytime at their own will. That will help tide them over till dinner..... with snacks in between like apple sauce, yogurt, a cookie and milk will be fine, cut up fruit, grapes, whatever you would eat, just feed it to them. They will be just fine.
And I am an older mom and I stay home, but we aren't rich by any means. In fact, right now things are tight and I need to go to work but I have found a brand new business that I have adapted called Bookwise. It is on the same line as say... mary kay except there is no inventory, no lotions or potions. no parties. I do everything off the computer unless I have a friend interested. I have been in it a month now and I am beginning to see about $400 to $500 per month coming in. It is kind of like an old timey hand pump. You have to work it at first but then when the water start coming you just work it a little bit. It will pay off. If you want to know more so you can work on staying home with your kids, let me know. I don't want to push it on anyone.
But take care of your kids... feed them table food, they'll be fine.

I am a mother of three and always started my kids on regular food before they told me to because the baby food was just not doing the trick. You can give them any of the soft food that they won't get choked on. Mashed potatoes, all soft veggies cooked, rice, scrambled eggs, toast, just start trying different things with them and see how they like it. My girls always loved potatoes and carrots or green beans, they also liked scrambled eggs with shredded cheese melted on it or syrup on them. Hope this helps you.

At this age you should be eating table food. They can basically eat anything they want. I was told by my doctor that as long as you cut the food about as small as a pea, they wont choke. My son loves those little Gerber tub meals, like the pasta picker uppers -ravioli type. He also loves those little meat sticks! They are both soft and easily chew able. I also started out with augratin potatoes or small pieces of cheese or chicken. Think soft and easily chew able- things that will dissolve like gram-sticks, crackers, or pretzels until you are very confident in their ability to chew stuff well. Its hard at first to think of things but soon you will realize that they can eat the same dinner as you!

I am sure you are an AWESOME mom. Start feeding them real food. Gerber Graduates are a good start and soft foods like mashed potatoes, fresh bananas smashed, sweet peas, green beans, tender chicken, cooked carrot cubes. Fingure type foods. I don't know if you have started this or not, but easing real milk into their diet is a good idea now too, as well as, easing them off the bottle.

My son is 13 months old and he eats almost all table foods. He's not a big fan of meat but he loves fruits and veggies. At his 12 month check up the pediatrician said basically there wasn't anything he couldn't try to eat except small, hard and round things that he couldn't chew or could choke on. If you're not sure check with the ped, but I'm pretty sure they could eat just about anything now. Stay away from nuts and honey and things that have a high allergic tendency. Good Luck.

Both of my children were off of baby food (except for deserts) by that age and were eating regular table food, just cut up small (and I had to add cheese to most of it - ha ha)Talk with you pediatrician. She/He can make suggestions. Experiment and see what they like by sampling your food with them. You may be happily surprised!
Good Luck- T.

Kudos for being a single mom of twins. My sister is a single mom of 2 year old twin boys and they are a handfull. I would say that your kids can eat anything that they have the ability to chew. My 20 month old little girl eats the little entrees dinners they are soft and easy to chew plus they are healty. Plus they could eat campbell's chicken and stars soup and other types of soups that would be easy to chew as well. I hope that this helps you.

Being a parent, no matter what age, is always a learning experience and I learn something new about parenting every day & I am 39 years old! As for baby food not satisfying your 13 month olds, I would seek the advice of their pediatrician. When my children turned 12 months, their pediatrician told me I could start feeding them table food, such as: diced ham, bananas, apple sauce, shredded cheese, yogurt, cut up grapes, etc. Make sure the food is cut small enough not to choke them. My two children like Mandarin oranges, too. I hope this advice is helpful to you! G.

K., all are welcome here. No need to feel intimidated. I do stay at home but am by NO MEANS rich :-).

Your kids are old enough to be on table food. Start with things that are cut very small for them. Mashed potatoes are always a hit with my kids. Peas, corn, meat cut in small cubes. They can eat whatever you are eating, just cut up. Good luck!!
