The Never Ending Diaper Rash!!!

Hey Everyone,
My one year old son has had a diaper rash for about two weeks and nothing seems to be helping. I have used three different creams (Butt paste, balmex, A&D) and it still won't go away. I have even had him naked for parts of the day hoping that this will help it dry out. It's not at the crack and bleeding phase yet, just very red and it obviously irritates him. Any other suggestions? I am thinking that if it doesn't get better in a couple of days, I will probably take him to the dr.
He has had loose stools for the same amount of time, not diarrhea though...just mushier than normal. He was gradually switched from soy formula to 2% milk over a month period, so I don't know if this could be causing the loose stools or not. When he was the a baby, the milk based formulas caused him to have projectile vomit and diarrhea. As I started introducing the milk a little at a time, he seemed fine until this diaper rash. Do you think the milk could still be irritating him?
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Most likely allergic to milk and soy, It will give a yeast infection. Give him probiotics like I-Flora for Kids and use Monistat or Nystatin on the rash itself. The core problem will only go away once you remove the offending foods. Try almond milk or no milk. Use only foods prepared with no milk or soy. Kids with allergies have a higher risk of developmental delays so be very proactive.

I like Dr. Smith's Diaper Ointment. When all else fails, this is what I use. Sometimes, I use cornstarch. Works like a charm.

Not sure on the milk thing, but what does the rash look like? It could be a yeist infection. If he has raised dots on him, that's likely what it is. You'll then have to put anti-fungal on it until it goes away.

The milk could be the cause of the problem or it could be a yeast rash.

He may have a yeast infection. I would take him to his doctor to check. My grandson had it and was prescribed a special cream.

I don't think the milk kas anything to do with the rash but you never know. He may also have a yeast infection. My daughter had the same thing, projectile vomit and a yeast infection. I never thought they could have to do with each other. But I took her to the doctor and they gave her a cream for the infection. My daughter was also switched to soy formula.
Take him to the doctor for ease of mind.
Good luck

I don't know what the cause could be for the rash, but I can say that if you haven't tried TRIPLE PASTE, do go buy yourself some right away! It's an amazing thick paste for diaper rash. Your sons rash will start to go away within 24 hours. They sell it OTC at Walmart, Target, CVS and other retailers. It is amazing. You do need to get to the root of the problem, but in the meantime, buy the Triple Paste so your sons discomfort can start to subside.

When my kids would get a bad rash the pediatrician recommended Lotrimin (athlete's foot cream) and it works wonders.

Aquaphor is one of the best diaper rash healers around. If you can keep him "air drying" for parts of the day, after one of his baths use a cotton ball or baby washcloth to gently dab liquid Maalox or Mylanta - whichever comes in the aqua bottle - onto the rash (can't find mine, must have gotten rid of it). It will create a soothing barrier to help his skin heal. A friend had a child with severe CP & the nurses gave her that tip - it works beautifully. Then keep a food diary & get him back on soy milk - then track what happens when you switch back to soy, or even if you try regular milk again. Good luck!

Most humans do not tolerate the milk of another species, for instance, cow milk like in your situation. Your son is probably eating food now so doesn't need the other stuff. Your son is a human, not a calf, so he doesn't need (for any reason) the lactational secretions from another mammal. Someone suggestion almond milk, that's good if you want something for cereals. If you're concerned about calcium (as the dairy council likes to scare you) give him green veggies, sesame seeds and figs.

Have you tried cloth diapers? They can be more soothing to a child and don't have all the chemicals used in disposables which are used to keep the child dry. They are unhealthy and toxic and can be linked to genital cancers later in life.
the other thing about all those creams is they have petrochemicals in them, they don't properly absorb into the body and can block the skin from breathing and being able to heal on their own too.

You're a good mama from paying attention to your child and his needs!

Check with dr-if it is yeast it will be red "pimply"-when my daughter had a "neverending rash" I used Dove soap or the Aveeno bath solution and my dr told me to dab Maalox on it (it was extremely irritated) and then desitin. He even told me to go out in the sun with her bottom exposed just for like 10 mins to let it really air out. I also changed diapers to a sensitive one for her and rinse out the wipes or just use a very soft cloth. But have dr check it out-if everything else fails-Good Luck

I'd call your ped, but I do call quite often (better safe than sorry). The nurses at our doctor's office are so sweet and often have great advice over the phone.

If it is yeast (raised bumps is one of the indications), then the creams you are using will have no effect.

My son had really bad diareah once. Our ped ran tests, but found nothing. It eventually ran its course. He had a bad rash. I felt so bad for him. I asked for advice, and the nurse recommended Paladin. Love it!!! It worked overnight. You could give it a try.

I had issues with my youngest and diaper rash as well. My father-in-law brought me back a rash cream from Germany once and from that point on it is all I used - it was a miracle cream for us! I had never heard of it before, but came to find out that it's available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Penaten-Cream-Cr%C3%A8me-Large-5-1-...
It's worth a try - hope it works for you!
Triple Paste is also pretty awesome - and available at Target.

When diaper creams didn't work for my son, I used Bag Balm. You can buy it at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, etc. It is inexpensive, and goes a long way. Oh, and it works great! Good Luck.

Yeast or milk reaction. I'd try the cream for yeast rash first for a week or however long the pedi says it should take to clear up the rash. If the rash doesn't clear, switch back to soy milk for month to 6-8 wks and see if that clears it. It takes the body 3 -4 weeks to get the milk proteins excreted from the body, then takes more time for digestive tract to heal if it's a milk allergy. If it's not yeast, you have to eliminate everything with milk in it. Look at all your breads, cereals, etc. and eliminate whey and casein, too, .... the milk proteins that get overused in foods! Good luck.

Those creams don't treat diaper rash. They are simply a moisture barrier and will not allow the rash to heal. Try neosporin cream ti treat it.

I agree, it may be yeast. When our son had a yeast rash the pediatrician recommended getting an OTC athlete's foot ointment then top that with regular diaper rash cream. It worked in just a couple days.

My one year old had a yeast diaper rash for nearly six weeks. I was also told it could an allergy to milk, but two weeks of no milk made absolutely no difference. We were prescribed four different creams (over the course of the six weeks) - and also used the malox and balmex, had her run naked - we did everything! In the end I was prescribed Vusion and it worked! It was the only cream that came close to clearing it up. I have heard it's expensive - thankfully my Doctor gave me some samples so I haven't had to fill the prescription yet. She also gave me a discount card for the cream to help lower the cost. It really is the best one out there - I think they often isn't a first choice by the doctors because of the cost.
