The Great Diaper Debate - Pueblo,CO

Alright, so I am a SAHM and money is tight. I am having diaper issues. With my two-year-old, I used Target brand diapers, and they worked well until 9 months or so when the manufacturer changed the product. They did not hold potty as well and I felt the quality was crummy. So I switched to Pampers.

If you have ever used Pampers, you know how expensive they are. Now that my DD and almost 6 month old son are both in size 3 diapers, the cost is killing me. I went back to the Target brand, because I could pay $13 for 104 vs. $37 for 160. What a price difference!

The problem is that my son pees out of his diaper every night - not just a trace, but his whole outfit is soaking. If I don't get up and change him at 3:00, he is soaked. (He gets his last change at 8:00 and gets up at 7:00. He is a side sleeper. I feel at this age, I should not have to change him in the middle of the night. He was wetting through the Pampers as well, but a spot as opposed to a whole bed change.

So, what do you use? What works for you? I am looking forward to all of the opinions on this one! Thanks a lot!
J.

Hi J..
I have the same problem with my son wetting through diapers at night. At first I just switched brands and it wouldn't really work. I have switched to cloth diapers, but use disposables at night. I have found that the covers for the cloth diapers work great over the disposable diapers and then he does not leak through and I can use generic brand diapers. The site that I bought the covers from is: www.greenmountaindiapers.com I recommend the "bummies super wisper wrap". It is an additional cost, but may save in the long run. Hope that helps.

I have used Targets before but I did notice a change in the quality. I've been a regular user of Krogers/King Soopers brand of diapers with great satifaction. Only lately I've had some trouble with the size 5 tabs coming loose. But overall I like these better than pampers and huggies which seems to granulate all over the place. My son is a tummy sleeper and I sometimes put a vinyl pull-on cover over the diaper at night and it keeps my son dry thru to the morning.
Good luck...

We used the generic for day time and the pampers overnites for the nighttime. It does cut down on costs. It is about $18 for almost 2 months supply. Good luck!

I have tried almost every diaper brand out there and my favorite is Luvs, they are reasonably priced and they really don't leak (there are execptions I'm sure but I have never had a leaky one). The dialpers that are cheaper than Luvs have all been terrible quality, one store brand (from Wal-mart) acctaully gave my baby repeated yeat infections, as soon as I switched back to Luvs I could finally get rid of her rashes. I should do a comercial for Luvs, I got my SIL to try them and now that is all she uses too! I just got my younger daughter potty trained (YEAH!) but I plan to use Luvs with my next baby whenever s/he comes along!

Wow! Such great input from everyone. We rarely use disposables, but have found Luvs to be good (also Safeway's brand, if you have one near). 99 percent of the time we use cloth (and haven't had any night-time puddles). There are lots of fantastic cloth diaper brands (like BumGenius, MotherEase, etc.,) but we chose to go the simplest, most economical route: prefolds and diaper covers. For covers I've used a combination of pull-up Dappi diaper pants (extremely reasonable), velcro Bummis whisper wraps, and wool wraps I sewed at home. These are simple to wash, dry wonderfully on the line if you have that option, and have helped our little one stay free of diaper rash. Plus, they're good for any additional blessings the Lord sends along. For newborns, 36 prefolds is a good amount (in infant size) and 24 regular-sized prefolds is plenty for an older baby. Cloth is just another option; hope you find what will work best for you!

I too had this problem with the cheaper diapers. I really like the Kirkland brand diapers from Costco. I'm pretty sure they are made by Huggies because they look and work exactly like the Huggies Supremes. They probably aren't as cheap as the Target brand but they are definitely cheaper than the name brands. Plus, to me it's worth it to not change clothes with every diaper change. Also, if you cut coupons and watch for sales (use the coupon with the sale) you can get some name brand diapers for pretty good prices.

Besides all the environmental and cost issues, cloth diapers have the great advantage of being able to use doublers. Doublers are thicker inserts that go inside a diaper to absorb more than the diaper alone. You can position them where you like, and even use more than one if needed. You might even get away with some doublers inside of a disposable diaper.

Wow, there are a lot of passionate moms on this issue! We have used cloth for both of our girls, and it has been great. They don't leak, they save tons of money, and they are so much easier than people expect. That being said, if you are not interested in cloth diapers, we have occasionally used disposables and had good luck with Wal-Mart's Parent's Choice diapers. Make sure you get the PC, and not their White Cloud version, which has not fit well on our kids. They are the least expensive, and they work really well. They won't contain blowouts shooting up the back, but I don't know any disposables that do. They do great with pee, though.

Best of Luck,
S.

Up the size of the diaper is what i've found out to work. My daughter is 18mos and very petite (21lbs) and she is wearing size 4's just so she doesn't pee out of them. I don't think we stayed in size 3s very long due to the leaks. I am still using pampers and my daughter is showing signs of potty training so hopefully i dont have to feel the crunch of the costs too much longer. are you tucking his peepee down at the diaper change so the pee isn't just coming out of the top when he goes? I get the generic brands for when she is at the daycare we are using the safeway kind and those things fill up so quickly I dont like them. A lot of people swear by the white cloud that you get at Walmart... I haven't tried those.

Hello J.,
I am a huggies mom, never liked pampers they leaked for my son all the time. If you want to compare price also compare use. If you go through three diapers a night with your son using the cheeper brand is it really cheaper. If each diaper costs .13 cents for the target brand and the pampers cost .23 cents per diaper. If you use 3 target your actually spending more .39 cents per night compared to .23 cents for one diaper. You need to take it all into perspective. Plus the .23 cent diaper means you sleep better.

Just a different way to look at things.

N. - full time working mother of a 2 1/2 yo who is potty trained and a 15 mo using huggies.

My son was wetting through his diapers at night also, so my husband and I decided to put him in the next larger size at night. It has worked great as long as we fasten it pretty snug at his waist. He is about 21 lbs and wears a size 3 during the day and a size 4 at night. The size four absorbs a lot more and we haven't had any leaks since we started this. Good luck!

Hi J.:

I had the same issue with my son. I buy the cheap brand for the daytime, but I put out the extra money for the Huggies Overnights at night. They are so worth the money, because you only use them once a day so they last longer, and you do so much less laundry! They are super obbsorbant and I just love them. For a while I also used them during nap time when he was sleeping for at least 2 hours. But now I only use them at night. They come in size 3-6, so you can use them as they get bigger and they don't cost anymore than a regular pack of Huggies I think like $19 at Walmart. But that $19 goes a long way as they are not used as often. This was my solution, hope it works for you too.

Hi there,

I had this problem with my now one year old when he was tiny, also. We had just purchased a new california king bed. He was a week old and soaked through his diaper while in our bed and there is a spot on it about half as large as I am! He did this three times on the bed and I had no clue what to do about it. I couldn't afford Huggies or Pampers. Anyway, I ended up buying Luvs and I LOVE them. They are a little cheaper than Pampers but a tad more expensive than generics. The generics leaked like crazy with him. The Luvs have never leaked and he's used them for the past year. It's worth it to spend a little more and not have them soaked! You can sometimes get coupons online for them to save $1. They're cheapest at Target. Good luck!

Hi J.,
Three things that I might suggest, the first being the purchase of Walmart brand diapers if a WM is available. We have used them since our kids were newborns and they have worked great. Secondly perhaps just using a Pampers diaper at night would help on cost rather then all the time. Thirdly you may try using plastic pants over the diapers. We have to do this with our son but it does save changing clothes and sheets etc regularly. God Bless, Covenant

They cost more but it is worth it. Since you only use them at night, it's not too bad. They may be somewhat hard to find. I would check the regular discount, department, or grocery stores in your area like Target, Walmart, Kmart, Shopko, Smiths, etc. You can get coupons in your local newspaper or directly from Kimberly Clark Corp.(Huggies) I hope this information helps. Cloth.

bumGenius 3.0 one-size diapers fit babies 7 to 35 pounds
http://www.bumgenius.com/one-size.php

We use them for our 4-month DD and 2-1/2 year old DS. We have 18 diapers and wash a load every 1 to 2 days. We do however, supplement the cloth with Pampers for the occasional bout of diarrhea. The initial cost is steep but considering we can use these same diapers until DS is fully potty trained and DD's entire diapering time, they come out much cheaper than disposables.

If the issue is really only at night, then I suggest Huggies Overnight diapers, maybe even in a larger size than he wears during the day. They are a little more money for fewer diapers than regular Huggies, but if he's only wearing them at night, a bag will last awhile.

Also, go to the company websites www.pampers.com and www.huggies.com and sign up and they'll send you coupons all the time. Then if you watch the sales carefully, use the coupons when they are on sale and you'll save a lot.

I had two in diapers for a year, so I understand the financial strains it has on a family. Hopefully your daughter will potty train soon!

i found walmart's white cloud brand to work pretty well, but i often had to go one size up from what they recommend for the age/weight. if they were leaking, i took that as an indication that the diaper was too big. whenever i used pampers or huggies, i found it was worth it to get the ones that are made for crawling babies with the better leg hole design. (i can't remember what they're called, cruisers or something?) they are usually more expensive, but worth it to not have to change the baby in the night. i also kept some of the walmart brand on hand and tried them every once in a while to see if the baby had grown into them enough yet so i could go back to spending less money. i think it's good to pay attention to which diapers fit best for other kids who are built like yours. my kids were not chubby babies, but my brother's were and we each used different brands simply for the best fit.

Have you ever tried LUVS? I have had 3 little guys and my first 2 both used LUVS and they worked as good as pampers for a fraction of the price. My little one now is in pampers cause he has a sensitive butt. I know some people who have used the Walmart brand and been very happy with them as well, but they have too many perfumes for our sensitive butt. If your little girl is 2, you may start thinking about potty training. I had my little guy totally trained by 2 1/2 so I didn't have 2 in diapers, because they are so expensive. He just needed a pull up at night and one pull up a day isn't too expensive! I have also looked into cloth diapers a little, just for at home. If I was not on my last baby I think I would have made the initial investment of cloth diapers, for when we are home. They have come along way from clothes pins and plastic pants! I don't think I would use those at night, but maybe they would make it so you could afford pampers for the night time! good Luck!

I had this problem with one of my sons (the nighttime leaking). I found a product that was like an extra diaper liner for nighttime -- it looks almost like a maxi pad. This solved our leaking. I wonder if those still exist? Also, I have heard that Pampers work better for girls and Huggies work better for boys. I use Huggies now and haven't had any problems.

We used Huggies overnite diapers for my daughter. She was always peeing through her diaper. We also found that when we would move her up in diaper size, we thought it would have a larger surface area and absorb more, it would be too big around her legs and leak out there.

The huggies overnite worked well though and worth the cost since we only used them at night. We would also put her in her normal diaper when we put her to bed and then change her into the overnite diaper when we went to bed usually 2 or 3 hours after her. Most nights her diaper was already pretty wet. This helped alot!

We use Walmart's Parent's Choice and likereally like them. Also they are cheaper than the huggies and pampers.

I would try doing Target brand during the day and Pampers at night. You still have to pay the price of pampers but only one package every month or so. Also, do you have a Costco nearby? I get 300 Huggies for $40 their.

Hi J.,
I love the other posts. Here's what I did. Go to Pampers.com and sign up for coupons, they will email or mail them to you (monthly). The savings are usually $3 a pkg. Then go to King Soopers and they will in turn print you a coupon at the check out for $1-$3 off. Usually, $3 off. So your saving on a jumbo pack of diapers is $6 they sell them for $10 and you pay $4. Pretty cheap. That's my expericence. Hope it helps.

Can you maybe use Target diapers during the day and get the pampers only for nights for your son? That way you don't have to buy as many expensive ones...and you might buy a LOT at one time when there's a sale. Good luck!

Try going up a size. I know it seems silly. My kids have always used Parents Choice from Wal mart. My both had leaking issues in the same size, but when I went up a size the problem went away. Otherwise I reccomend Parent's Choice, White Cloud, and the Sam's club or Costco Brands. My sister's and close friends hav been pleased with these brands.

I am also a fan of cloth! I swaer, these are not your mama'a cloth diapers anymore! There's no swishing anything in a toilet (ew!) and no work harder than running a load of laundry, which for me is easier than packing everyone up to go to the store. If you have two in diapers, I recommend Bum Genius brand diapers because they are size adjustable to fit both kids. I also love love love Fuzzi Bunz diapers. You can see them at www.cottonbabies.com and www.fuzzibunzstore.scom. Initially, the prices will shock you, but remember, once you build up a stash you will be using disposables so rarely you won't be fighting that big expense hidden in your grocery budget. You might also like to look at www.greenmountaindiapers.com because they have lots of photos. Pocket-style cloth diapers are my favorites--just as easy as disposables and no leaks or blow-outs, even overnight. Even if you didn't want to convert to full-time cloth, saving your paper diapers for occasional use instead of an all-the-time thing would decrease your diapering expense. I bought a dozen Fuzzi Bunz diapers and inserts on eBay for my first son for just under$200. My second son is noe 2, and the elastic on them has only just given up. Now that's value! Good luck!

I, too have had two in diapers at the same time and know how expensive it gets! Pampers are also my favorite because of how well they work but I very rarely get them unless I have a great coupon or something. And I've had the same trouble with store brands- they just leak too much! So now I only use Luvs. They are a little more expensive than store brands, but cheaper than Pampers. And the best part is they really work almost as well as Pampers! My son very rarely leaks out of them! I hope this helps!

I have used Luvs faithfully with all 4 of my boys and I absolutely love them!!! We've had a occassional leak or two when the diapers too full but otherwise they hold up really well. And they are much less expensive than the other name brands. I think I pay about $18 for the big box. You should try Luvs. All of my boys leaked in Huggies.

I hate Target diapers, and Huggies actually. I've always used Luvs. But I have three boys and they all have had issues with peeing a lot at night. One thing I think you might want to do is go up a size in diapers. That will probably solve your problem. Even if you just want to use the larger size at night. Also, this sounds crazy but I used to put two diapers on my baby at night. One on the regular way and another on backwards. It worked, I never had any leaking!

J.,

Obtain and use cloth diapers and rubber pants. Skip the throw-away paper diapers. The paper diapers are not as good as the cloth ones, and they are very expensive and very wasteful. The initial expense of cloth diapers is a little daunting, but you don't have to keep buying them over and over again, so they end up being MUCH cheaper in the long run. Yes, you have to launder them, but they are not that time-consuming. My son was in diapers when I was in law school. I used cloth diapers and was able to handle the time commitment.

We really liked the White Cloud brand at Wal-Mart for our first son. Our second son was allergic to them, so he's still in Pampers. You might check out PODS. You can put them in the diaper to increase the absorbancy. You can find them on a number of websites with potty training solutions. I'm not sure how they compare for cost. I ordered some about 4 years ago and they were reasonable then. GL! (Do you have a restaurant in town? BBQ and sweet tea is my weakness this pregnancy!)

I know how expensive diapers can be. We have a 23 month old daughter. The brand that has always worked for us is Huggies. We pay $19.95 for a box of 92 diapers (size 4) at Wal-Mart. I know it's a little more expensive than the other brands, but they have always been reliable and I have never had to clean up a mess because of leaking. We also get coupons in the mail that are usually for $1-$2 off so we make sure to use them. I am also a SAHM and we are therefore a one income family of four. This brand has been worth every penny. We are potty training so hopefully we'll be done with diapers soon. Hope you find a solution that works. Good luck!!

Do you live near a Costco? We use the Kirkland brand of diapers. It is $35 for almost 300. I love them!!! They are just like Huggies, but alot cheaper. For our 2 1/2 year old daughter we used Huggies Nighttime diapers. However, since we have been potty training, we use the Pull-ups Nighttime. That are a bit spendier, but they last a month, being only used at night time. I shop sales for diapers, and haven't stuck with one brand, except the Costco/Kirkland brand. When we run out of the Kirkland's and can't get to Costco (which is 60 miles away), we use Luvs. They are so much cheaper and neither of my two have peed out of them. For the Huggies nighttime, the smallest size is a size 4, but this would be a good thing for your son. The bigger size at night is also one way to go. I hope this helps.

Hello,
I currently use the WalMart brand, Whitecloud, during the day for my 18 month old daughter. I have been using these almost her entire life. I have had one or two leak throughs, but that is after she had ALOT of fluid and I didn't get her changed in time. If I can get the Huggies on sale, or with a coupon, I buy those once in a while. But, at night, I do pay the extra and buy the Huggies Overnights. I have only had one leak through since I started using those. There are mornings she gets up and that diaper can't possibly hold another drop, but it didn't leak. I hope this helps some. Good luck.

If you have to change your kids twice as much, you are not really saving on the cost of diapers, plus I am sure it drives you crazy. Try going online to huggies.com or pampers.com and signing up for coupons. Look through ads and when they are on sale, buy a few packs. I recently tried the Kroger little comforts from Smiths and they worked pretty well. Good luck!

Good morning J.,
I was a SAHM too... BEST THING for your kids!!!!! I used cloth diapers when I was at home. I only used paper diapers when we had to get in the car to go somewhere. I liked Luvs the best, but also, because I was home all the time, I had a waterproof pad under the crib sheets and double diapered at night. I also breast fed so my boys ALWAYS had wet diapers it seemed! ha ha!! Every mom feels like it will never end, but it will... Hang in there! &:-)

Well, I didn't have this problem (I had plenty of others!:) but I did see some posts on my mom's group about something similar. One of the women suggested double diapering - put the normal diaper on, then put another diaper over it - using the next size up diaper on top. I know that some people found it helpful - maybe you could buy just one pack and give it a try?
Alternatively, I also saw once where the mom just used the next size up at night.
Sure hope you find the answer!

I used target brand also, and would have the same problem. I would double diaper her, and fold the first one down so the second one could catch it. I don't know if that helps, but it did for me. It ony lasted awhile till she started eating solids more.
