The Dog Has Got to Go, but Where?

Well, I made the mistake about 7-8 months ago of getting a dog without husband's approval. Long story short, it hasn't worked out for anyone. Even the kids want him gone, and after he rolled himself in cat-poop and then got it all over the house this morning, his last defender is done (aka, me).
Where do I take him? He's a 9-10 months old, super-cute, all shots up-to-date, white mutt (We call him Marley--he really lives up to his name!) He climbs fences, tears up the kids' toys, terrorizes the neighborhood (we had to get him a shock collar so he wouldn't leave the yard anymore--but he's actually an inside dog--he just goes outside to use the bathroom, and make his escapes). But he's really sweet, and when he runs, he looks like a deer! He hops. It's so funny. So I don't want him just euthanized. Is there anywhere in the DFW area that could help me find him a home? And by the way, I nursed him through Parvo, so I really, really want to find a good match for him.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We still have him. It was a frustrating day that day, but we've been putting him in our carpeted garage when we leave the house, and it's helping a lot (if it's nice out, he goes to the backyard). We can't crate him because he just destroys the ASPCA metal wire crates and bloodies himself (in 2 hrs alone in one). "Even I" hate to see a dog suffer. I can't afford new crates everyday, sorry, but if you want to buy me a crate he can't break, more power to you. When we are home, he uses a doggy door to go outside when he wants, but the collar prevents him from escaping the house and yard. I hadn't tried containing him since the crate incident, because when he gets locked out of the house or in the garage, he bloodies his nose by repeatedly rubbing it on whatever surface he can until he bleeds. In the crate, the soft padding and the later a towel were covered in spots of blood from his "nosing." So I had given up containing him bc of pity, but we're doing it anyway and hope he calms down after he gets used to the routine.

If you have any idea what he's mixed with, call that particular rescue... Whether it's a lab rescue, collie, etc...
DON'T DO CRAIGSLIST!!!!
I volunteer at rescues. You can call your local rescues and ask if you give a donation, if they'll take him... Call your vet and ask for advice..
Geez, you brought him back to health after overcoming Parvo? You should REALLLYYYYYYY try keeping him... All the things you say he does, is because he's a puppy....I only adopt dogs that are 3-4 years old because I don't want issues like that...
GOOD LUCK!

The Ft Worth Humane Society is ALWAYS overcrowded- so please dont go there. Im not bashing you but this is my honest opinion about people theat get dogs. If you accept the responsibility you must stick with it- the animals deserve that! He is a puppy. Everything you describe is totally normal and he will grow out of it. I have been in your situation- we rescued a dog my DD wanted without giving it much needed thought. I absolutely could not stand the dog- 2 months, 6 months a year later! She tore up everything she came in contact with and all of our shoes. Like you, we spent over 1k healing the dog thru Parvo (When my husband wanted to put her down). I wanted to give the dog away many many times- but 3 years later, we still have her. (And she still drives me crazy) The main thing your puppy needs is LOTS of attention. They are destructive when they are bored. Research puppy training techniques online- there are plenty there and they work. If he is causing so much trouble indoors- make him an outside dog- he will be fine out there! Im not too fond of the shock collar but if its working for you..ok. Really give him what he needs before you give up on him. You may find him another home but whos to say they wont tolerate the behaviour and pass him on to someone else- eventually he will be put down in a situation like that. I feel for you, I have been there and it was a miserable time and caused many arguments between me and hubby. Keep in mind, he has no idea how to behave until he is trained to the behavior you want. Dogs really do want to please us! Like kids, even negative attention in better than no attention. Good luck to you

DO NOT TAKE HIM TO ANIMAL CONTROL, they will put him down if another home isn't found. A humane society is your best bet. I live in Collin County and give kudos to Collin County Humane Society and Frisco Humane Society, they both rock! Hopefully there is one closer to you but if you're not sure, try contacting one of these organizations and maybe they can tell you of a good organization in your area.

No offense, it just sounds like you need to take more time to do training. We took our dog to training classes at Petsmart and it was so helpful! But it requires you (and your family) to then use the training techniques daily to enforce the the wanted behaviors and get him to stop the unwanted behaviors. With the training, and with age, they do get better! Our dog is now about 15 months old and she is definitely better at listening to her commands now than even when she was 9-10 months old. Practice, practice, practice. But if you're definitely sure you want to give him up, then please contact CCHS, FHS or another humane society closer to you.

Contact your local Humane Society and explain the situation. I volunteer for different rescue groups and there are tons out there that will help. I have been in your shoes with an escape artist and we returned him to the group we adopted him from. Now, we have the perfect dog for our family that is a rescue. Also, if you know his dominant breed (like poodle) you can find a breed specific group to help.

My daughter in NC bought a Whippet thinking it would be the perfect pet for them. After a few months dealing with a dog that runs 30 mph, a chewed pair of $250 shoes, a chewed expensive computer cable, and stepping into lots of poop, my son-in-law said it was him or the dog. We live on 20 acres in TX, so we received the dog as a Christmas gift while visiting them. With the help of a trainer at Petsmart, and turning 6 months old, she became the sweetest dog. We've had her for 5 years this Christmas and she's devoted. I've said all this to encourage you not to give up on your pet. Marley may become exactly what you desire.

please, please, please never list an animal on craigslist! People use the dogs for bait dogs in dog fights.

It really just sounds like your puppy needs training and exercise. Bored dogs destroy things and climb fences to escape. Are you walking him every day? High energy dogs absolutely need exercise, and just having a yard to run in isn't good enough. Petsmart has good training classes, maybe you could try that first before giving him away?

You need to get him into an intensive obedience course... not a quickie basic one. Between that and allowing his puppyish phase to transition to a more sedate temperament... he should be a good family pet.

This is why many get older dogs/cats - so they don't have to deal with the hair pulling puppy/kittenhood behavior.

Call local rescue groups. We looked at Pug rescues who had Pugposters (aka Pug imposters).

On facebook or email....circulate something you have written up about the pup and a super cute picture. Ask friends and family to spread the word (forward email) Wouldn't it be nice to know where the dog is going?

Could also post fliers at your local vet, dog park, petsmart, etc so you know you're getting responses from actual animal lovers.

Could also try CraigsList but you have to be pretty picky there too.

Good Morning,

Just wanted to chime in, been a dog lover for a very long time. Have owned many different breeds and dealt with all kinds of behaviors. 1st ? Have you ever owned a dog before? Dogs do roll in poop, that is not untypical by any means. I understand it is frustrating, but that is part of owning a dog/puppy. I read from your post you have kids, as we all well know kids when they are young do some crazy behaviors too when they are being toilet trained. I bet you have had to clean up some nasty messes with your own children. You stated the dog is about 9-10 months old. He still is a puppy and he is considered a puppy until at least 2yrs of age. So a lot of the behaviors you describe: such as climbing fences, tearing up kids toys, running the neighborhood are very typical of a puppy that wants attention. You must give him some toys that you and the kids can play with him. Do you have a fenced in backyard? How exactly is he escaping? out back or out front?

This is so hard because there are so many many dogs out there who need a good home. Dogs are like kids they need time and nuture to grow up. I would go online and seek out a rescue. They are full so you may have to wait a while and make a donation for "your mistake". Also learn from this some people are not dog people. The DFW Pug rescue might have some answers for you or go on Craigs list and interview your own people but be honest about his bad habits.
