The Breastfeeding Forced Vacation

Isn’t breastfeeding awesome!  I mean, my son is 17 months, and he’s never been sick.  He’s the smartest kid in the world (yours, too, I know!hehehe)!  And most noteworthy, I haven’t had my period since I got pregnant over two years ago!  How great is it not to have bloating and cramps and mood swings!  It’s funny, I remember at 3 months thinking I was going to quit with all of the other stresses of life (work, school, and home) trying to interfere.  I remember thinking that I do not have time to stop and breastfeed, but I am so proud that I am still going strong!!!  The time I take to nurse my son is precious and I would not trade it for anything.  It is the time I am forced to relax and stare into my baby’s eyes, and the best thing, in addition to all of the great health benefits for both of us, is the incredible bond we have because of the commitment I made to breastfeeding.  Every time I take time to nurse my son it’s like a forced vacation!  Does any one else feel this way, too?

What can I do next?

Congrats on being able to do it for so long! I think it is awesome. It is a little mini vacation from the world, and the sleeping in is definitely a plus! Both going back to sleep for a while.

I do, however, find it weird when people take the nursing to the next level and continue to do it until their kid is like 7 or something. That is just way too long in my opinion!

ABSOLUTELY! I loved breastfeeding & fed my twins for 15 months. I was so sad to stop, but we were all ready. Mine never had ear infections as infants, and have only had maybe 4 between them since then (they're almost 10!). ENJOY your special time! :)

Kudos to you, M., and wonderful for your son! I, too, love breastfeeding my little guy. It is an incredible break in the day for us to reconnect and just relax for a few. It's amazing, though, how many people felt it necessary to put in their two cents on nursing older kids. (For the record, I don't consider your son "older", but their implications were that over 18 months is "older", depending on the post.) It is a very different type of nursing, usually only once or twice a day for a couple of minutes, and it doesn't sound like any of them made it to the two year mark, even, to know what nursing an "older" kid would be like. I've always been amazed that everyone thinks that our kids who are one are no longer "babies" who need nurturing anymore. If you decide you'd like to nurse longer but are getting pressure to stop, I encourage you to seek support on mothering.com forums, kellymom.com, and at La Leche League meetings. Continue listening to your body, gut, and baby, and you will know what path is yours to take. Enjoy these precious moments. :)

I love it - my son is only 4 months - my daughters are big kids, 4 and 5 so obviously not nursing! I plan to nurse my son till a year, I think it's the most relaxing time and it is just great for both of us. Now that my son is more aware I love the way he looks up at me and smiles while he's nursing, it is so cute, it makes me feel very maternal and loving....

It is awesome, I thought I'd nurse till she was one, then that time rolled by, so did birthday number 2, and 3. I decided I would stop on her 4th birthday so we'd remember the day. She just turned 9 and remembers and misses it. so do I........... beautiful time, cherish it and keep going! I have a friend that kept going till the kid was 6. WHO recommends till 6 or so

I liked breastfeeding b/c I could go to the movies and nurse him the whole time if he needed. No need to pay a sitter and he never made a peep. I could also sleep in and nurse since we co-slept.

I agree, there is a bonding there and a little vacation... but after a while I wanted my boobs back. Especially when my kids got older (about 15 months) and thought it was fun to stretch them as far as possible. Ouch!

I nursed till my son was 2.5 and enjoyed almost every minute of it. The first 4 months were tough because I got Shingles 3 days after he was born and it screwed things up for us. It took almost 4 months to get back on track and I wanted to BF as long as I could. I'm so glad I did :)
