My family will be relocating to the Dallas area next summer, after our eldest child graduates HS. Husband's new job will be in Arlington. His commute time is a factor, but excellent schools and safe, family-friendly communities are most important to us. We've lived in a wonderful master-planned community in Houston for 9 years, and desire something similar in Dallas. Our 3 other children will be in 10th, 6th and Kinder in Fall 2013. So far, we've been very impressed with the Flower Mound & Coppell areas. Would appreciate any advice that might be helpful to us about both communities, schools, lifestyle, etc. Also, we welcome info on any other areas we might consider. Thanks so much!!

I agree with others that the drive is going to be pretty bad. I think it might be a little better in Grapevine, also consider Colleyville/Southlake/Keller. And maybe there are nice parts of Forth Worth that would be closer to Arlington-- I am not as familiar that far out.

I love, love, love, Flower Mound. We have lived here for over 12 years. I love the access to the neighboring suburbs and also how convenient it is to get to either Dallas or Fort Worth. You might check out Trophy Club- I don't know a ton about it, but I bet it has master planned communities. I personally like the Flower Mound schools and the wide open spaces that Flower Mound has :)

Like one of the other responders, I am in the Denton area which is a little north of FM. If you like that master planned type of community, you should check into Lantana which is just on the outer boundary of FM and Highland Village. Lots of planning and money went into making that community and might be something you would find interesting. A commute from the FM area is going to be a busy one but may be a little easier since the majority of traffic seems to come out of Arlington in the mornings which would be opposite of your husband's travel it sounds like. Best wishes on your future move.

Those are both very nice communities. But that drive is going to be ridiculous.... Probably anywhere from 45 mins to 1 1/2 hours per way depending on what time he is supposed to be at work. So a total of anywhere from 1 hr - 3 hrs spent in traffic. (This is during peak driving times - 6:30-8:30 am and 4:30-6:30pm) You might also look at Mansfield. I have heard they have impeccable schools, great communities and it would be much closer to Arlington.

FYI I live in none of the above. I just know the mess surrounding the 121 corridor and lived off of 360 in one part of my life.

I have lived just north of FM for 10 years and taught elementary school there for 5 years. It is a very nice community with excellent schools. As far as "keeping up with the Jones" goes, that will happen in most nice communities by some people, but the majority of the people I know who live there are as nice as they come. I do not know too much about Coppell except for very good schools, too. I agree with another that FM is more of a homey place to live. You will be happy in either city, I am sure.

I agree that Southlake is absolutely beautiful, but really pricey. FM is really nice and they have been working in making the main roads wider so the commutes are much easier. I have never been to Coppell.

Have you also considered Southlake? All are good. I'm a bit partial to Coppell, but have no great rationale to justify my bias...just happen to like it.

My husband 2 teens and I moved to Flower Mound about 5 years ago from Maryland. We feel it is the best move we've ever made! We absolutely love Flower Mound! We looked at Coppell and chose Flower Mound for these reasons. Although both towns have excellent schools we like Flower Mound because of the younger families living here and the conveniences on every corner. If you are looking for an older community with established neighborhoods then you may like living in Coppell but if you are looking for a younger neighborhood with newer stores, restaurants, physicians, and other shopping on every corner than you might want to consider Flower Mound over Coppell. Neighboring towns are accessible so opportunities for speedy commutes hear and there are common.
We love living in Flower Mound and hope to live here through retirement. Another item of interest I'd like to mention is that Flower Mound has a good infrastructure in that there are rarely traffic problems even during rush hour. There are occasional hot spots during construction as in every town but for the most part I feel construction is well planned and there are "escape routes" with other routes to escape the construction areas.

Not sure about those areas, but you should check out HEB ISD, which would be Hurst, Euless or Bedford. I have lived in south Arlington while working in Irving and the commute got tiresome. Commute from Euless or Bedford would be much better than where you are talking. We moved to Euless in 2008 and just moved to Bedford this year. Commute to work is soooo much better. My daughters have gone to Euless Jr Hi and Trinity and we happen to love the area. A very well rated district and affordable housing.

I love living in Coppell! I have been here for over 13 years and have never regretted my decision. If you want a small town feel with access to everything, you can't beat Coppell. Kids (even teens) in this town are wonderful and respectful. The other day I was at the grocery store with my 5 month old only to turn around and see a group of 6 teenage girls waving at him to make him smile. To funny and cute! On top of that, the staff at the grocery store are wonderful! I had a rough pregnancy and they were my village to get through it. I can't say enough about the sense of family and community here!

This town is growing fast. We have become a central access point to tollways and have a ton of new restaurants and businesses showing up monthly. Love all the new places!

Come to Coppell.... you won't regret it!

I get the whole keeping up with the Joneses around this area in general, not just in Flower Mound. Me and my family have lived here for a little over five years. Our neighborhood is perfect for us! We moved from NJ so we were not use to being so social in a neighborhood (little private in NJ). We play in our front yards with all the kids in neighborhood, we love our school, I have a 1st grader and a 2 year old.
I like the convience of everything here. Lewisville on one side, Highland Village on another and Grapevine. Don't get me wrong, Coppell is nice, but I would take the homey feeling here anyday!

Hello!

My family and I moved to Coppell 7 years ago and love it. I have never lived anywhere like this!

Coppell is a very small (pop. 39,000), tight knit suburb in the middle of many very large suburbs. Almost everything in this community is surrounding the schools and sports. There are many, MANY parent volunteers at the schools, including dad's clubs if dad's want to join in. All of the schools are rated Exemplary by the State of Texas. Academics are really pushed. Nobody squeaks by. If a child is having a difficult time with anything, his teacher works with him until he understands. No child is allowed to fail because that would mean the school has failed him.

My son started here in 1st grade and is now going into 8th. The children he has had in his classes along the way, I can truly say, are GOOD kids who have been raised in strong, supportive families. My little one starts kinder next week and I am excited to get back to our elementary school!

Our neighborhoods are full of our friends. Open arms all around. I know that if my 13 year old wants to ride his bike around town, that there will be a minimum of 3 adults that he will see that he knows. You will always run into a friend or two anywhere you go; grocery store, restaurants, hair salon, etc.

If you are looking for family friendly with a small town feel, I strongly suggest Coppell.

Good luck with your move!

I have lived in neither of the areas but a Flower Mound resident shared with us once that there is a lot of (negative) pressure in Flower Mound regarding status...keeping up with the Joneses, as the old saying goes. Mostly high income families live there. Of course, the same could be true of any number of nice areas...I have heard nice things about Colleyville.

Both areas are very nice, my first thought is that the commute will pretty much stink unless it's north Arlington-I realize traffic is likely worse in Houston but you're talking some major construction right around the airport right now that is going to continue for the next 2-3 years. You are more likely to find a master planned community like you are used to in FM but more than likely it will push you further north. You might check out Grapevine/Colleyville, HEB (Hurst, Euless, Bedford) and Mansfield, all are well rated.

Those are both lovely areas, but rough commutes. I would definitely add Grapevine and Southlake to your list of possibilities. Both those school districts are excellent.
