Tests on Son Shows No Common Allergies, So Why....

My 2 1/2 - year old son suffers from episodes of eczema and what seems to be constant congestion. We recently had him tested for common allergies (food, indoor and outdoor), and he is all clear. So, what the heck is the problem? His doctor mentioned that he could be allergic to something not so common that wasn't tested for or may be he is simply sensitive to some irritant (possibly a soap or cleaner we use). We use All Free and Clear detergent and Aveeno Baby wash and lotion. Could there be a chemical cleaner I use that he is sensitive to?
Will an actual allergist be able to test for other kinds of less common allergies?
Also, he has been on Zyrtec since the spring. It seems to me that if he isn't allergic to the common indoor and outdoor allergies, then there is no point in continuing.
Any advice as to where to go from here would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Cleaning products are thought by many to be the main reason asthma is on the rise. A google search will find you many articles on this. In my opinion everyone should convert their home to non-toxic cleaners for health reasons and for the environment. I learned all this when looking for Green Cleaners and watched an Oprah Show endorsing Shaklee. I liked it so much now I am a distributor. I'd say give it a try. It may just do the trick.

Something that has really helped me and my family is converting my home over to products (cleaning, personal, etc) that don't contain chemicals, cancer causing toxins or fumes. They work great and it's wonderful to know we are all safer and healthier!! I order them from Melaleuca. They've been around for 23 yrs and again, work wonderful!

Good luck!!

I would bet that he has a food intolerance. My children both did this type of thing and Dr. Bain in Frisco ordered a test to test 120 most common food intolerances. It has totally helped my two children. I am looking to do the testing too now that I see how amazing it has been for my childrens' immune systems. Dr. Bain is at www.healthykidspediatrics.com

Did you go to an allergist or ENt. If you have ot yet seen an ENt I would suggest it. It could be his adenoids contributing to problems and causing congestion.

Our son was the same. All of the time his cheeks would break out, etc...and the allergy tests showed nothing. But it turns out that he is somewhat allergic to wheat flour. It was good to find out, but we are hoping that he grows out of it because if you look at the ingredients, almost everything has wheat flour in it. But if you need a great allergist, we see Dr. Ruff by Presby Dallas. My hubby sees their practice too and they are always in the D Mag top pedi and adult allergists...good luck!

It could be just about anything. We did the same thing with my son last year. It turned out he was allergic to sunblock! (Something they swore to me was so rare that they never tested for it, even when I suspected it.) I am usually not into the whole natural, organic, etc. things, but it may be the only way to go for you. When we switched to a natural sunblock it fixed things for us. I am a huge believer in Bert's Bees products now. You may even want to try their washes and lotions, they are more natural than Aveeno. So perhaps try that with your household chemicals. And yes, an allergist will test for rare things, but you have to push them. Depending on your insurance, it is also more expensive and takes more time and sometimes repeated visits. Best of luck. It's horrible watching your kids suffer and not know how to fix it!

Unfortunately, the tests done for your son were likely only for IgE (immediate allergic reaction) antibodies. As someone else mentioned he can have intolerances which are more like delayed allergies and those can show up as IgG (delayed) antibodies.

Also, your son may have celiac, which is an intolerance to the protein found in wheat. You can get tested on your own at: www.enterolab.com

My younger son had eczema that has entirely cleared on a GF and Casein Free (CF) diet. Those are two of the most common culprits in terms of skin reactions like eczema. And, dairy is the biggest culprit in excess mucous production and congestion.

I totally agree, Zyrtec is likely not helping your son at all and the potential side effects are not good. I actually had an allergic reaction to zyrtex - mouth swelling.

Also, if it is gluten that he's reacting to, Aveeno is not a good choice as I'm recalling it has oats and oats are usually contaminated with wheat, thus that could also be contributing to ongoing problems.

Both of my kids have food allergies, and they did not react to the typical blood or "scratch" (skin prick) testing that pediatricians or pediatric allergists use. Luckily I have allergies as well and never react to those methods. I only react to what they call intradermal testing (an injection under the skin), so I figured my children were probably the same way. Our pediatric allergist who is highly regarded does not perform that type of allergy testing on little kids. I took my 1 year old to my mom's allergist. He sees people from all over the world with extreme and unusual allergies. He agreed to the intradermal for my son, and thank God he did. We found my son to have milk, wheat, corn, and soy allergies. Since he has been off these foods, he has not had the congestion, sinus infections, and ear infections that he has had for months. No more antibiotics. By the way, he has been on Zyrtec too, and it doesn't do anything-I think because Zyrtec treats environmental allergies and not food allergies. Maybe trying that method would help your situation. If you would like the name and number of the doctor that tested my son, let me know. HOpe this helps! A.

I know this will make me sound like a crazy person. I've never been much concerned about chemicals because I thought the FDA would protect us, but dioxins are known to cause skin, respiratory, and nervous system problems. They are produced in the paper bleaching process and traces can be found in paper towels, paper plates, napkins, feminine products and diapers. Dioxins are primarily introduced into the body through the respiratory system and absorbed through the skin. This is information put out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Even though only traces of dioxins have been found in diapers, I believe it is a major player in eczema and asthma because of the fact that it is absorbed through the skin and diapers are in constant contact with the skin. There are no studies about it, and I could be totally wrong. But kids do seem to "grow out" of asthma and eczema which also lines up. I'd like to see some studies done on this in the near future. Using cloth or chlorine free diapers might make a difference (or it might not).

I was told last year that my daughter had asthma, and she was sick almost constantly from about Sept to March last year (she was also on Zyrtec the whole time). We switched to cloth diapers in May (for financial reasons, not health...I only recently discovered this information), and she had a cold in Sept this year. I took her to the doctor in case she would need a breathing treatment, and he said her lungs were totally clear. She was sick 2 days, and has not been sick again. Could be that she's older and her immune system is more developed. Could be the cessation of the constant exposure to dioxins. We'll never know, but the switch was worth it to me.

You know, my Dad has been tested for everything and came back negative. Well, he goes outside to cut the grass and for days he has a major fit of allergies. I have no idea why it didn't show up. Eczema isn't an allergy though. My baby cousin had that, my aunt used this Eucerin cream, it comes in a jar with a blue top and also she used the Equate affbrand. Anyway, she puts some of it in the inside of lid and mixes it with cortizone cream, after a while, it really cleared it up. He looks so much better. Hope this helps
