Terrible Rash, Please Help!

Dear Moms,
My almost 6 month-old baby girl have never had a rash before, but now it started and it is terribly strong! I have being introducing her to new foods and some of them give her a mild diarrea, so I imagine that's the reason for the rash. Problem is: I work all day and the regular daycare changing diapers (with Balmex) is not helping it to heal. I leave her bottomless at home and keep cleaning whenever she needs (I have the impression that exposition to air will help). I even stayed home today to leave her without diaper one entire day, hoping this will work. But it is not healling as fast as I would like... She cries whenever I try to clean her (and I am being as delicate as I can)! Am I doing the correct thing? Should I put some medication? Is there any medication that you know of that I can use without harming her more, and that will work??? Please, help is welcome!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you SO MUCH for answering promptly! Here is how it is going now: she had a fever in the day I wrote you about the rash. It was 100.1 and I gave tylenol and she was ok. But she had another fever next morning, them I got really worried (the rash was getting better, but not enough to make me feel better). I called the doctor and she saw my baby and she said the fiver probably was because of a virus and had nothing to do with the rash. She gave a prescription for the rash. As for now, this is my conclusion: she had a virosis, which gave her the diarrea (and as I was introducing new food, I though it was alergy). This ended up in fever and the rash, that got yeast because of the heat, etc. She has had only one more fever and is being ok for 1,5 days now. The rash is much better: I am cleaning with warm water (as I was told by many of you), leaving her without diaper for some minutes to get some air and heal better, applying the prescription medication, followed by her usual Balmex - only because it is finishing and I will probably look for a new brand when I have to buy a new tube. I will see which new brand, based on what you guys have told me. Well, that is it! Thank you again and I hope she gets completely well soon!

When I had my first baby, a friend gaver me this recipe for the best butt paste ever--take 1 tbsp of original desitin, 1 tbsp of Aquafor and 1/2 tbsp of Maalox--mix together and spread on rash. I was amazed at how well it worked--even though it is a bit of an expense at first with all of the ingredients, it lasts a long time. I would usually use old pill bottles and mix with a plastic spoon end that I can throw away--it is rather thick to mix. I hope it works for you! I've had a lot of success with it on my two little ones!

Hello
My daughter also got terrible diaper rash, and I can tell you a few things that worked. I used a squirt bottle filled with warm water to rinse her at diaper changes, and then wipes only if necessary to remove the rest. It's a bit messy yes - I put a towel under her bottom first to catch excess water. Also, you can make a homemade cream that works REALLY well. A pediatrician and a long time babysitter told me about this. 1/3 liquid Mylanta (soothes) 1/3 vaseline (barrier) and 1/3 Lotrimon cream (over the counter cream). it really worked for us!!

hi. i am guessing the baby may have a yeast infection. one of my son's when a baby, got them, and then my #5 who was a girl had one by the time she was only a few weeks old. i have also had 2 grandbabies get them. diaper rash meds will not help, nor powder. you will have to try something for yeast infections. when my son was a baby they had me just get over the counter med. found in the girl's hygiene stuff with the douches, ect. that is also what i did for my daughter at the time. my grandbabies ended up with med prescribed for yeast infections which was basically the same as the over the counter kinds. good luck. i know it can be frustrating! take care,

I'm sure you've heard this already, but when my son got a really bad diaper rash at 2 weeks, his doc told me to use a mixture of half aquaphor and half maalox. It cleared his rash up in just a few days and made the raw spots better overnight. The maalox neutralizes the acid from their pee and poo, and the aquaphor keeps the moisture off their skin. But if that doesn't make it look better in a day or two, I would definitely take her to the doc to see if there's something more serious going on.

My gut tells me that her rash is due to a food allergy or a yeast infection. If I were you, I would go see doc to rule out the yeast infection that can be easily treated with a simple mixture of cortizone and athlete's foot lotion. Balmex won't help if that is what it is.

If you have introduced a new food recently, eliminate it and see if the rash clears up. Her body may not be ready to accept certain foods yet, so don't panic that she will have this particular food allergy forever. I have a 7 month old who has a laundry list of allergies. I am told he will likley outgrow all 8 of them by the time he reaches 18 months. I learned of them through breastfeeding (my diet was getting in his system through the milk proteins and he was covered head to toe in a rash that can best be described as looking like I had dunked his poor little body in scolding water! Absolutely terrify!) Anyway, when I eliminated my diet down to chicken and rice, and a few select fruits and veggies, he has had crystal clear skin since!

Hope this is of some help. Definitely couldn't hurt to see the doctor though.

It sounds like she has a yeast infection. My son gets them all the time. His doctor told me to buy some cream at the pharmacy for athlete's foot. I have bought Lotromin and even the generic. And he said to use the wipes for newborns as they dont have alcohol. Keep the area clean, and make sure it is dry, then put on the cream on the area, and you can even put desitin or balmex over the Lotromin, then cover that with powder, then put on the diaper. For my son, it usually takes a couple diaper changes for it to go away, but it doesnt take too long, sometimes even overnight and it is gone.

Good Luck.

Hi! The first time my little guy had really horrible diaper rash, my ped. recommended AQUAPHOR (hope I'm spelling that right, it's pronounced AQUA-FOUR) and MAYLOX (the stuff you use for heart-burn) It worked well. The Aquaphor acts as a moisture barrier while the rash heals, and the Maylox has a type of cooling action that soothes their little bottoms. It sure makes a mess when you mix it up, but it works! I used an old mixing bowl and an old spoon...(pitched them when I was done) and mixed equal parts Aquaphor and Maylox and stored it in a tupperware container...it does not spoil and you will have enough to last until your kid is 10! lol Hope this helps, good luck!

First off, do not use wipes (they contain alcohol, which burns on a rash) Use a luke warm washcloth, that will help a little. The cream I found that works best is Boudreaux Butt Paste (a life saver for bad rashes). But also there is a diaper rash babies can get that is a type of fungus, and will not go away with any over the counter cream, your doctor will need to write you a prescription. Best of Luck.....

Home remedy for terrible diaper rash that has always worked in the past for my family, and we have been using it since I was a baby myself. We buy vitamin E gel tablets. You can usually pick them up at any pharmacy or even a health store. Break open the caplet, and rub the oil onto her bottom. Do not use any baby wipes. Use only warm wet wash rags at this point. If it's nothing other than a bad diaper rash it should start to clear up in a matter of a few days. Hope this helps and good luck.

My daughter had developed a terrible rash right after she was born. We tried everything-even went to Urgent Care. The best thing that we did to get rid of the rash was to use the regular strength Desitin, it has 40% zinc oxide, the strongest you can find in any diaper ointment. Also for her pain, after you wipe her off, dab original Maloxx on her bottom (this will help with the acid from her diarrhea). I know you would like it cleared up as soon as possible, but it will take a few weeks till it is completely gone. Also you might want to stop using diaper wipes and just use water and a soft paper towel to wipe her off. (We had discovered that my daughter has very sensitive skin and it was the wipes that gave her her horrible rash). Good luck!

Hi C.! Sounds like your baby has a yeast infection. The normal bottom creams will NOT take care of this. You will need something from the doctore to help heal this. I know of one thing you can try at home, this will sound crazy.... but it works. buy some plain yogurt, apply the plain yogurt to baby's bottom. do that a few times a day,and before bed. use only warm wash clothes to clean her,not baby wipes. If that doesn't work in a few days then you should take her to doctor. Good luck!

Hello,

HAve you ever herd of butt paste? It is a home made ointment.
You take a 1/3 c of maalox, 1/3 c of eucerin original lotion and 1/3 c of destin ointment(not the white cream). I have used this both times and it heals and takes away the sting. Also try to rince out wipes before you use them on her bottom. and if this dose not work call your doctor they might have other ideals

we have always used 'BUTT PASTE' & it works really well. i also recently tried desitin overnight.
when my son had the worst rash ever (he had rotovirus at the time & his output was very acidic) -- anyway, the dr gave us a RX for something called 'the worlds best butt cream'. (or a similar name). you need to go to the dr for it, then the pharmacist has to mix it. it's a combo of (i think) 3 ingredients. it worked like a miracle!! you put it on & by the next day it dries to an oatmeal like state.
hope your little one feels better soon :)

This sounds like it could also be an allergic reaction. You should stop feeding her any food other than her bm/formula untill this gets cleared up. Then, when you start to reintroduce foods you should do it one at a time and wait at least 1 week but probably 2 (since she does seem to having a reaction) between giving her new foods. Good luck!

Some times children need a prescription antibiotic to take care of rashes that just won't go away. Make sure you don't use baby wipes when cleaning here. Use a wet washcloth instead. During a bout of horrible diahrrea, my son developed a pretty bad case of diaper rash. Nothing worked - until my mom told me about Pink Xav. She used it on both my brother and I when we were little - we're talking like 26 years ago! It's been around forever - and it WORKS!!!! it is a little strong, so a little bit goes a long way. I would change his diaper, allow him to lay on the changing table with a book until he was completely air dried. At that point I would apply the Pink Xav (pronounced pink salve) and a small touch of cornstarch (never talc) baby powder. It worked amazingly. They have it behind the Rx counter at Walgreens. Good luck, and I hope this helps!

From experience, it sounds like food allergies. You need to stop the new food and take her to get tested soon. My son broke out with peas as a baby and turns out he is allergic to all nuts (Peanuts are a legume...as are peas and green beans.)

For the rash, try mixing a tub of aquaphor with a bottle of Maalox. It is messy, but worth it. The antacid takes out the sting. The pharmacist may help you. Just try to slather as much of thick coating on both her diaper and her bottom. If her new diaper messes don't/can't stick to her bottom when she goes, it'll heal a lot faster. Also, try soaking in a warm bath and letting air dry.

Good luck! I feel for you. I know it's sad to watch them in pain!

You're probably right, it's the diarrea from the new foods. Slow down the foods, one at a time till you find the problem. Try Neosporin on her bottom and when you put on that or the rash creme litterally slather her- you should not see skin, just messy creme everywhere. We've had great luck with Aveeno diaper rash creme but the home run for my girls has been the Bert's Bees creme. It's not the best if the sores are open at all- it's got some peppermint or something that tingles a little so it hurts for a few seconds if the sores are open- but over neosporin or vasiline may work. Check with your pharmasist too- or other mom's out there- there was some mix of milk of magnesia, and 2 or 3 other weird things that were supposed to be a miracle- I didn't need it so I never mixed it myself.

You've got lots of responses & ideas, I just wanted to "second" the suggestions of using Pinxav (I've found it at Discount Drug Mart without asking the pharmacist) and do not use the wipes, just use a cloth wet with water only. There is no need for the chemicals on the wipes. Also, if it's really really bad, while you're at home you could just dip her bottom in a tub of water.
Also, the idea about it being thrush (yeast) is a good point. My dd had that, it is very red with lots of bumps all over, ugly looking not just a normal diaper rash, and it usually wont' go away without medicine (although airing out is definitely helpful).
Last but not least, evaluate what you fed her that caused the diarrhea and I wouldn't give any more of that for awhile. Especially anything sweet, like fruit and fruit juices, are main culprits for diarrhea.
Good luck, let us know what helped!
Blessings,
Lynn

Yep, the last girl said just what I was going to say. My dr.s always tole me to mix lotrimin (yes, it's for feet) w/my diaper rash ointment or alternate lotrimin one time ointment the next. It will clear it up in a few days. Here's a tip on diaper rash ointments. My sisters and I swear by one called Pink Salve. Some stores may put it on the shelf w/the other ointments MOST will have it behinde the pharmacy counter. YOu don't need a script you just have to ask them for it. The other thing we SWEAR by is Caldesene powder. CVS puts it right out on the shelf w/the baby stuff. It comes in a pink bottle. It's not cheap but I've been using it my daughters entire 17 mos. of life and she's only had diaper rash twice. It's worth the extra money if you ask me!

It would probably be best to have your pediatrician take a look at it. In the meantime, try Pinxalve (pronounced like "pink salve"). I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly, but the pharmacist will know what you mean. You don't need a prescription, but sometimes it's kept behind the pharmacy counter, so you might have to ask for it.

Sorry to hear your baby isn't feeling well! A couple suggestions. First, don't use the premoistened baby wipes. Sometimes the soap in them can be too harsh when there is a rash. Just use a damp wash cloth to wipe her. Instead of using balmex, try mixing together some aquaphor and malox. The aquaphor creates a barrier so the urine/fesces doesn't touch her rash and the malox will neutralize the acid and help her feel better. Good luck!

But I would suggest that you call your Pediatrician, that is what they are there for. When my daughter had it, her pediatrician was able to give us a few options to try. Plain old Corn Starch works for both of my kids. It was amazing how quickly it cleared up. Christine,
First of all, rest assured babies always get rashes even with the best skin care! You are doing a great job and it is always difficult when you don't have family close to assist you. I have 3 suggestions for you. 1) Introduce new foods slowly (no more than one new food per week), so you can see what triggers the rash, 2) Try the old fashion rememdy of mixing equal parts of maalox, aquaphor and desitin and apply after each diaper change. Before applying cleanse diaper area with mild soap and warm weater and rinse well, dry and apply rememdy. 3) As a nurse who has worked with wound care, I would suggest the following that worked well with our patients with rashes that were developed from moisture born areas such as diaper areas. Always cleanse the diaper area with a mild soap and warm water using a soft wash cloth. (Use white wash cloths, babies are sensitive to dyes etc.). Rinse well and pat dry with a paper towel. Use a blow dryer (cool setting or lowest heat) and dry the diaper area well so there is no moisture. Do not hold the blow dryer to close to the baby's skin. This is the most important step in assisting the rash to heal. The heat drys the skin better than you can manually and helps the healing process. You want to prevent any moisture. The moisture is a breeding ground for yeast type infections. After this step, apply either Neosporin or another over the counter generic brand of a triple antibiotic ointment to entire rash area. This has antibiotics plus zinc in it that will promote healing. Do this two to three times daily. We saw the rashes heal within 1-2 days doing this on patients who developed yeast rashes in the groin areas and under the breast folds from moisture from sweating or urine or diarrhea. Hope this helps. You will be surprised how fast it will start healing. You should notice improvement within one day. I would definitely seek guidance from your pediatrician after a couple of days if you do not see any improvement. Some rashes, may require a presciption or futher evaluation. I would avoid using the diaper wipes until the rash heals. Then, only use the alcohol free ones. Some babies are very sensitive to laundry soaps, fabric softners, baby wipes and even certain brands of disposable diapers. Good luck...let me know how your baby does.

You can find it in any supermarket in the baby section, it comes inside a yellow box and its very effective, but keep doing the no diaper when you can, because the air does help.

Hi Christiane-
I'm not a doctor and I'm definately not diagnosing this, but I just wanted to let you know the situation I was in once with my son. Your situation sounds kinda like the one we were in about 4 months ago. He will be one year next week...
He had a rash that wouldn't go away, whether I let it to sir, different diaper rash creams, cornstarch, etc.
It turned out to be an allergic reaction. A couple of weeks before (I think it was about three, it can take that long), we started using a new brand of diaper wipe. Maybe yours is a similar allergy? To be sure, if it's not getting better, I would say to take to the pediatrician-

The only thing that I can say is A&D ointment. My daughter has very sensitive skin in her diaper area and the only thing that I can use on her is A&D. Your daughter seems to be the same way which means that the Balmex wont help, but only prohibit the rash from getting better. Hope this helps.

I've beent there, just try to relax, it will be ok. The best thing I found for both of my kids was the following recipe.

Mix equal parts (2 oz + 2 oz, or however much you want) of REGULAR Desitin (not the creamy kind) with Aquaphor (available in any drug store). Once you have the amount that you want mixed up, add a capful of Malox. Sounds crazy, but it cleared up any rash either of my kids ever had within 24 hours. My oldest even had reactions like you're talking about when she started on solids, and I got the recipe from a friend. The best thing I ever discovered. Just make sure you mix it in a container that you have a secure lid for that way you can toss it into the diaper bag.

Good Luck

Hi C.,

My daughter has extremely sensitive skin, like me, so we have dealt with a number of bad diaper rashes. Since you are introducing new foods to her, it sounds as though your suspicion that it might be an allergic reaction could be correct, so make sure you discontinue whatever you were feeding her when the rash developed and consult her pediatrician. As for the rash itself, I've found that I have to be very careful about using wipes on my daughter. First, I can only use the pampers sensitive on her little bottom cuz she breaks out with anything else. However, for the first four months of her life I could only use a washcloth and warm water on her...no wipes at all. Anytime she develops a rash now (which fortunately isn't that often anymore), I have to revert back to that. It's very inconvenient, but so much more gentle on baby's delicate skin. If the rash persists, you might want to have her pediatrician prescribe Nystatin cream. My daughter's ped prescribed it to her because my daugher is especially chunky and has really large creases between fat rolls so we use it to prevent redness and infection in those areas, but its actually made for diaper rash. Its very gentle and works great. I use Desitin religiously anyways, but the Nystatin cream works great in a pinch. Good luck to you...I know how frustrating it is when you know your child is hurting. Hugs!

This will sound crazy, but my Pedatrican had me do this when my son had a terrable rash that would not go away -- it works.
50% Aquaforic 50% Maylox -- mix and use in place of diaper rash ointment. Aquaforic is a vacaline type thing sold by the lotions, it is white with a blue lid, in a cup type container. You also have to figuer out the cause and remove that from her diate -- in my son's case it was when he turned 1 and it was milk.

You might try using A&D, it worked the best out of all of the creams for me.

After four girls and numerous daycare kids, I can tell you from experience, the absolute best thing on the planet for a stubborn diaper rash is the Aquaphor, Eucerin Cream, Maalox mixture. I've had kids with BLEEDING butt rashes from a variety of causes, and this helps IMMEDIATELY!

4 oz Eucerin CREAM (make sure it's the cream, it won't mix up correctly otherwise)

4 oz Auquaphor

30 ml/cc of Maalox

I use to just mix up a batch and keep it on hand. MIRACLE STUFF I tell you!

Also, stop using baby wipes and just use warm wet cotton balls or a warm, SOFT wash cloth to clean her.

Good luck!

This may sound like a really weird combination, but the nurse told me to do this with our daughter when she had a weird, speckly rash. Mix equal parts Aquafor lotion, it's medicated type of lotion, and Maalox, plain. It takes a little while to mix it, but keep mixing it and whipping it up until it is a paste. It will eventually happen. It cleared her bottom up much faster than usual.
And we also had a several days in a row when she was under a year old to a just over a year, that she had some horrible diaper rash. Change often, and give big hugs and kisses when you are done. Good luck.

Hi I can understand your frustration my boys have very sensitive skin and the diaper rash is always an issue especially during the summer months. I found that pinxav works really well. You can buy it at your drugstore at the pharmacy. It seems to help clear up the diaper rashes a bit quicker than the other diaper ointments. Once the diaper rash is cleared up I use desitin whenever my boys get even a little bit pink. I hope this helps and best of luck!

Hi Christine,

I assume you've stopped feeding her the foods which maybe causing the rash.

Have you recently changed to another type of diaper for her. I've heard of some babies reacting to certain diapers.

Not all rash creams will work for all babies. Try vaseline, or diaperene, or any of the others. Balmex may be irritating it even more.

Don't use the baby wipes, most have alcohol in it and can be very irritating. Wash the diaper area with just water, and dry. If necessary use a mild soap, but rinse well and dry.

If you don't see some improvement by Monday, you may need to take her to the Dr, there maybe another reason for the rash.

I hope she clears up quickly! Good luck!

K. :-)

All three (10,7,3) of mine have sensitive skin and easily got diaper rash. I found that using Aquaphor helped. If things were really bad I would first put on the Aquaphor and then put a layer of Balmex over that to try to keep as much on their skin as opposed to the diaper. Aquaphor is made by Eucerin and can be found in the same area in most stores as the baby lotions. It was recommended by my ped. for this as well as dry patches of skin my little sensitive ones were prone to. Hope this can help you.

Ok hun my daughter you used to get the so bad she would bleed and here it was a yeast infection yes little girls can get them and the dr gave her adult meds for it then I talked to him later cause it kept happening and he said to just get an over the counter cream (it is cheaper) and rub on there. And if i caught it fast enough I could use antibacteral soap and it would get rid of it good luck let us know

This sounds like more than a simple diaper rash- it's possible she may have developed thrush on her bottom at the same time.

I'd suggest taking her to a doctor for nystatin and to ensure her rash isn't infected.

Otherwise, you are doing the right things so far. Your instints are running strong.

C.,

Our little girl had the same issue. We tried diaper cream and leaving her diaper off but nothing worked. Then we called our doctor and he asked if she had any diarrhea lately. We said yes from some new foods. He told us it probably wasn't diaper rash, but a fungus infection (same as what causes athelete's foot or jock itch) caused by her diarrhea. He then said we could do one of two things, bring her in to have it checked out and get a prescription cream or first try anti-fungal cream used for jock itch. We tried it and it worked, her rash cleared up in days. You only have to use a small amount, just enough to cover it. I don't know if you want to try it, but it definitely worked for us. Good luck!

I would always use Lotrimin,it's an antifungal cream. Also try cornstarch, just plain old cornstarch. Just put it on while the skin is still damp so it sticks to it. Both these methods always worked for me. I used it on my 3 children, I have a son that's 25 and also Girl/Boy twins that are 11 yrs. old. Also I am using it on my grandchildren,2yrs.old and 6 months. Good-Luck to you. Please let me know if this helped. B.

A little trick that I found that works well to deal with diaper rash is you have to attack it from inside and outside. Give her a small dose of pepto or mylanta and use some cornstarch on her bottom! Don't worry that the pepto and mylanta isn't good for her. It's perfectly fine it's the same thing my pediatrition told me to use on my son! He cleared right up!
good luck

I would recommend the Pinkxav (pink salve). My 1 week old daughter developed a blistering rash within 2 days of birth. We tried A&D and Desitin with no luck. Got the Pinkxav and it was MUCh better overnight. You have to ask the Pharmacist for it, but you do NOT need a percription. Good luck!

My little girl is just getting over something similar. I thought it was a bad diaper rash, and kept putting balmex and a&d ointment on it, but nothing was working. Found out from a nurse friend that it was actually a yeast infection. She said to mix whatever diaper cream I was using with Lotrimin and to use that for at least a week. I saw a huge difference overnight! It's been 5 days and I'm still using this mix, but it's almost gone now and she's much happier. Until it starts healing though I would use a damp washcloth to clean her instead of baby wipes. Hope this helps!
