Terrible Mosquito Bites

My kids who are 2 and 3 years old, have a terrible reaction to mosquito bites! They swell up and get hard and even get puss in them at times. They also scrath them until they bleed. Does anyone know of an ointment or cream that will help? I've tried Caladryl, Neosporin, Afterbite............nothing seems to help the itching/pain they have. We use bug spray when we go outside, but clearly that isn't keeping them away very well. I need something because my kids would live outside if I let them; they love it and I couldn't keep them inside even if I tried.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. It turns out that they ARE allergic to mosquito bites and the doctor gave me a prescription cream and suggested Zyrtec daily. I don't give it daily; I hate to give them medicine "just in case" but instead only when they are bitten I use it. Thanks again for those who responded......it's nice to have such a good "sounding board" on some issues!

WOW - I love this website. Makes you feel like you're not alone. I thought it was just my daughter who has this problem!! We have tried Bactine (antiseptic/numbing spray), Neosporin, Off for kids, calamine lotion & nothing works. The one cream my pharmacist recommended was Aveeno Anti-Itch cream with calamine 3%, oatmeal & Pramoxine HCl 1% in it. It seems to work the best so far as length of time with no itch. The pharmacist said not to use too much cortisone cream since it's a steroid.
I also finally took my daughter who is 2 1/2 to the ped. just to make sure it wasn't something else. He said some kids just have an allergic reaction to bug bites with welts and blisters. He said to give her a 1/2 tab of the children's Benadryl 3 times a day until it's resolved. I only give it to her before her nap & before she goes to bed at nite since she scratches more in her sleep. It has REALLY helped along with the Aveeno cream. The welts have gone down & she's not itching constantly now. Good luck!! Hope you figure out what works for you & let us know if it's different. :o)

One of my children has the same reaction to mosquito bites, but his usually get infected and we have to go to the doctor or ER with them. His doctor gave us a prescription cream called Bactroban to use when he gets bit. It is a cream that treats skin infections. It basically stops the infection before it starts, and seems to calm the itching down quite a bit. I hope this helps!

A.,
In the store there is a section for the outdoor mosquito control stuff, like OFF and such. There is a little tube, I cannot remember the name, but it looks like a chapstick tube, and you can put it right on the bite.
I don't know what is in it, but whatever it is, it works. Might try that.

We have had good luck with the Burt's Bees natural bug spray.

If the bites still happen, you can wet the bitten area and then rub aspirin on the bug bites (as long as no one is allergic to aspirin). Another helpful soothing agent is cold milk; you just swab the area with milk and it helps take away the sting and swelling (cold milk works well with sunburn too).

Hi A.,
I use the alcohol swab pads on my children when they get mosquito bites. It keeps them from itching and they clear up very quickly. Hope this may help.
T.
By the way, I waited even later than you to have children and am loving every minute of it!

my daughter went through (and still does) the same thing - the pediatrician thought she was having a reaction to something and it took us awhile to figure it out - she would even run a slight fever - turns out she is allergic to mosquito bites and that's what causes the severe reaction - give her a small dose of benadryl and put an anti-bite cream on the bites - a warning though, until all the bites are healed, every new bite will make the old ones flare back up - i thought my daughter had outgrown it but she has several bites now and is having the same troubles :-)
