Hey there mamas! You've been helpful in the past for me so I thank you in advance for your advice.

My 10 month old just cut her top teeth through and I only discovered that they had broke through because she was crawling through my kitchen GRINDING them together!! ARGH! The sound is terrible, but what is worse is I want the teeth to actually come IN not get ground to smitherines before-hand!! We've tried distracting her with carrot sticks and teething rings (as if those actually work ever! ;) ) We've also tried teething tablets, but they don't seem to phase her, she likes them though! So beyond that, I'm out of ideas.

Many thanks again!!

my daughter did this too and it drove me crazy (the sound is like fingernails on the chalkboard for me!). However, its totally a phase. She's playing, for lack of a better word, with her new teeth. There's probably not much you can do about it, and she'll outgrow it soon.

It will pass.
They do this.
Normal.
using things to stop it won't help. A baby does not have impulse control.
Once they get "things" in their mouth (ie: teeth), they often grind their teeth.
Both my kids did that too.
The dentist said its normal and will pass.

Oh I feel your pain sister!! My daughter did that, too!! My cousin is a dentist and I asked her about it. She said it's very common for kids to do that when getting new teeth.
A. helps to relieve some pressure when they are coming in
B. it's something new in their mouth for them to play with
I was like you though and had to try my very best not to snap at her bc that sound gives me the heebie jeebies!! haha I would keep giving her her sippy cup, put my finger in her mouth, and basically anything that would distract her. It only lasted around a week FORTUNATELY. They get over it fairly quickly. Just hang in there and know it will be over soon! :)

Mine does it every time new teeth come in. It is the most awful sound, but there is really nothing you can do to stop it. She just has to get used to the feeling of something new in her mouth.

When we asked our dentist/oral surgeon, he said not to stop it, because that's actually HOW they cut their teeth... by rubbing their gums back and forth, pressure, grinding, etc. Also that baby enamel is MUCH harder than ours, and that in 5 years they're all going to fall out anyway, so either buy earplugs or a mouthpiece for ME so that I don't grind my teeth out of frustration, because mine are for life (our dentist has a great sense of humor), and I don't have teeth to cut.

Yes I know it sounds horrible doesn't it!!....unfortunately it's normal , it will pass soon , I think they do it because they are not used to have teeth that meet together so they grind them , but trust me it will stop in a few weeks if that.

Hi V.,

I's quite normal. Babies discover the new noises/feelings that grinding teeth gives and if she likes it, she just do it for fun. She should get tired of it in a couple of weeks, at most.
However, some babies also do it to relieve tension (as sucking their thumbs). In this case, they need quiet environments, especially at nap time and bed time and continue diversion (carrot, teething rings)
I wouldn't be concerned, unless it gets worse instead of diminishing in the coming days.
My son did it for a week or so, and I agree that the sound of it is quite awful. My daughter is 10 months also and 6 teeth and hasn't done it (yet!)

I don't think you have much to worry about. She is just checking out her new digs ya know. She will slowly begin to ignore the new found teeth probably when she gets more.

Goof luck!

I have two boys and when they started teething they grinded their teeth. I think they do it because they are new and are just experimenting with the new fun things in their mouth. =) I ignored it and didn't make a big deal out of it and they stopped within a couple months.
