Temporary Guardianship

I recently was appointed temporary guardianship of an 8 year old boy. The 8 year old is just like a member of our family (Mom, Dad, 2 boys). He gets along well with my own children and listens very well. I was wondering if anyone else was ever given temporary guardianship and what services are out there for him or our family. Can I get him health insurance (he has no coverage)? Can I get him free or reduced lunches? I have never done anything like this before and was wondering if there are services available to help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank everyone that responded. I only have temporary guardianship until either parent is released from prison (hopefully next year). They are divorced, met Mom when she was a neighbor and the kids hit it off really well. Met Dad when he had his kids for weekends. My kids enjoy visiting both houses. The Mom is engaged to my brother, so all the kids a excited about becoming related! Both parents are good people, just made some bad choices and are now paying the price. I have kept in touch with both and made sure that there are parent and son visits and letters. I can get him medical assistance so he will have health insurance. Our Church offers a food bank once a month, which has been a huge help with groceries. We really enjoy having him in our home, and are glad to our help friends.

You should be able to get him a medical card. Do you have something 'official' (notarized or thru the court) to show that you are a gaurdian? I'd call medical assistance and ask about applying. Also, you could call CYF to ask for advice. They deal with these issues all of the time and could point you in the right direction. If you think this will be a long term thing, you might want to get CYF involved. If you don't have a placement thru the court, the parent can come back at anytime and take gaurdianship back. I don't know what the situation is, but you might want to ask CYF about that. You can call and not give your name and get some info. Good luck!

Editing b/c I see you are in Butler Co? They have their own child welfare agency and I'm not sure what the name is. But you could do a google search.

My Mom took guardianship of her nephew at age 12. The one thing that my Mom didn't realize was this: You can love the heck out of them and provide total stability, BUT that doesn't change the fact that his parent/parents abandoned him. Get him councelling as soon as possible to help him work through the damage that is going to be happening. Yes you can get him health care...call your local Health and Human Resources. Also utilize the school psychologist if need be or even the nurse...they are great resources. My Mom's nephew was fine until adulthood...dealing with abandonment issues is rough! Good Luck and God Bless.
