R.M. asks from Oklahoma City, OK

Hi Moms!
I am moving to Oklahoma in a few months and was wondering if I could get some advice from any of you that have lived there, have family that lives there or have ever visted. My husbands new job is located in Oklahoma City but we are hoping to move to a town just outside of the city. I have done a little research on Norman and Edmond but it doesn't compare to actually living there and knowing the in's and out's of the town. Any advice on any town about 30 minutes or less from the city would be great? Thanks to anyone who can help me out in advance!

I just recently moved here from OKC and loved it! I went to college in Edmond, and it's the cleaner, more upscale part of town. There are lots of big beautiful houses going up on the outskirts of Edmond with lots of land. There are also some reasonable houses there as well. Nichols Hills is a really nice area in OKC. Both Edmond and Norman are college towns, but Norman more so.(Ok Univ.) Good luck to you, please ask if you have any more questions.

Hey R.,
My parents are both from Oklahoma so we go there often to see my grandma, aunts and uncles, etc. I believe Mid-West City is nice. My aunt lives there and loves it. My grandma lives in Normon which is mainly just a college town. I know houses are cheeper there then here. A realtor could also give you advice and the best neighborhoods. Good Luck.

I am originally from Norman and most of my family still lives in OKC(Oklahoma City)and the surrounding areas. Norman has grown a lot. But it hasn't lost the small-town feel. There is always something to do around town and you are close enough to OKC that you can always drive up there for more to do. University of Oklahoma is in Norman, so the population and traffic triples during home games. I love Norman and plan to move back "home" as soon as I can. I could go on and on about it, but I may be more helpful to you if you ask me specific questions to answer.
Other towns to check into: Moore, Yukon, Mustang, Blanchard...there are more towns to list, but it all depends on the size of town you are looking for.
Please let me know if I can tell you more...hope this is a good start.

Hi R.. I grew up in Moore, Oklahoma and moved here to Dallas about four years ago. You're definitely looking at the two best options: Edmond and Norman. Norman seems to have a more hometown feel about it than Edmond does, and it can be less congested than Edmond - with the exception of the college life traffic which can be avoided. Norman has a good school system. Edmond has better shopping with the newer malls close by and depending on where you're looking to live may have a little better schooling system than Norman. Either way, you should be pretty happy. Personally, I prefer Norman only because it seems to have a little more character than Edmond. It has unique small restaurants and shops, beautiful trees, and good people. Edmond always appeared to be a bit on the pretentious side because of its newness. I hope this sheds some light for you. Best of luck!

Hi R. -

I'm originally from OKC, and all my family still lives there. If you're deciding between Norman and Edmond, it will be a tough choice, as they are completely different types of cities. Norman is a college town. OU (oh, and by the way, you better buy some OU stuff quickly - it's a huge deal in Oklahoma no matter what part you live in) Anyway, Norman is very geared to college kids, the whole college experience, sooner football, etc. Although to us here in Dallas, it seems like just a little suburb, in OKC, Norman isn't considered a suburb - if you live in Norman, you shop, socialize, etc. in Norman. That is starting to change a bit, but it is still the mentality. So if your husband is working in OKC, his coworkers probably will not live in Norman, so socializing will be more challenging.

Edmond is, say, Plano - it's the "hip" place to live. It USED to be a college type town, not really connected to OKC, but that is now changed, and most young families aspire to move to Edmond. Big, newer houses, great neighborhoods, yuppie stores (Edmond I think was first to get a Starbucks, if that tells you anything(, great school districts. Most of your rush hour traffic snarls are to and from Edmond (although OKC's version of traffic is very different from Dallas).

OKC is small enough that no matter where you live, you'll still feel a part of the city, unlike here in Dallas. Other great areas for young families can be found in Moore, Mustang, Piedmont...It just depends on what you want out of a town - Do you want the separate small town feel, or do you want a suburb-type town that identifies itself with OKC?

Feel free to ask me questions about the area - I'll be happy to answer anything and everything. Good luck on your move!

Hello R.,
I grew up in a small town called Guthrie, which is North of Edmond about 15 minutes. Great town lots of historical things. Antique shops. They do have a Wal-Mart, McDonald, and Sonic and a few other stores as well!!!
Edmond is a good town but housing can be expensive. Population in Guthrie is about 10,000.
Oklahoma is a great state.
We are actually moving back to Oklahoma in a couple of months too. My mom, sister and best friend still live there and I am ready to move my family back.
Hope this info helps and if you have anymore questions about Oklahoma please let me know and I will do what I can to answer them.

R.,

My son and his family live in Moore, OK. They have been there for about a year now and love it. He is in the Navy and was glad that they allowed him to live off base. It is about 10 mins from downtown OK.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi R..
I ahve lived in Bothe Edmond and Norman, and I love Norman best. Traffic is not bad to OKC, nothing compared to Dallas traffic.
Please feel free to call me and I can tell you more.
