HELP?! My little girl is going on 5 and severely grinds her teeth while sleeping. I've talked to her ped dr about it but says she'll grow out of it. My concern: Her father and grandmother (dad's mom) also grind their teeth. Grandma acutally wears a mouth peice at night to help protect her teeth. I'm concerned about the long term affect his could have. Any suggestions?

She has a dentist visit next week. I'll be seeking the advice from him as well.

What can I do next?

You are right in asking your dentist's opinion. It may not be a big deal, and she may grown out of it. However, I think the hereditary issue is definitely something you need to include in your discussion with the dentist. It will most likely just be something to be monitored for the time being -- just make sure you are bringing her to the dentist at least once a year (every 6 months is better) and leave the decision up to the professionals. Good luck.

i used to grind my teeth. talk to the doctor about using a Vitamin B with C complex. I have been using it for years. It stops the grinding within a day or two. Even had my boss try it, and it works for him as well.

I have the same issue with my 5 yr old son. The dentist said they usually out grow. And plus there is nothing they can really do about it right now anyway. The dentist said they are too young for a mouth piece. That they usually won't try one on kids until about age 12 (at least that is what our ped dentist told us). Good luck and I would be interested in what your dentist says...

There could be a nutritional deficiency, and/or a stress reaction that manifests at night. I've been successful in resolving them using the combination of homeopathy and certain superfoods.

My 4 year old does the same thing. I talked with her Dentist a few weeks ago at her apt and he said that is very common at this age. He checked her teeth and said that there was no damage due to the grinding. It typically is not a concern until they are older and have their adult teeth or if there is damage to the teeth as a result of the grinding. I would still talk with her dentist about it, but probably noting to worry about : )
