Teeth Extraction on 5 Year Old!?

My son, age 5, is scheduled for pulling four of his baby teeth. All are molars, one on each side on top, and each side on bottom. He has been to the dentist since he was 2. Had regular check ups. He has had 3 fillings. However, now the dentist is saying that the fillings are not working and need to be re-done. He tried and my son would not cooperate. our dentist decided to send us to a kids dentist. He(our dentist) indicated they would probably "cap" those teeth. So we went for a consultation, and this dentist says we have to pull four teeth!! We were in shock! Now that we have thought about it for a few days, we are thinking we need a second opinion. What do you moms think? My mom intuition is telling me we dont need to pull all 4 teeth. I agree that one may need it, but not all four! Has anyone gone through this? And can you recommend a kids dentist for us to get a second opinion? We are willing to drive, so any where in Fort Wayne to South Bend, Kokomo to Indianapolis. Thank you so much!

You don't say why these four teeth need to be pulled, but I would go for the second opinion.

Get a second opinion! Dr Rector in Muncie is great. Well there are three Dr Rectors in the office. I have heard great things about all three we have only seen the son (adam) not the father or grandson.

My son was 2 or 3 when he had to do a filling. Because it was a big one the pediatric dentist did it under anesthesia at a outpatient surgery center. He felt it would be less traumatic to him and he wouldn't have to deal with him squirming. I don't live in your area but I would recommend you look for a second opinion. My dentist is in the Cleveland area.

Dr Micheal Johns###-###-####) in South Bend. He and his staff are sooo great! My daughter, 5 years, loves going there. No bribery or pleading necessary! She chipped her tooth at 2.5 years. Dr. Johns had to sand down the sharp point, but did not even suggest pulling it. It was quick and painless. There are tv screens in the ceiling to help distract from the work he is doing in their mouths! He has a huge trunk full of little toys for the kids to pick from after their visit. His office is in an old home on Eddy St., and it is filled with toys and stuffed animals for the kids to look at and play with while they wait. He is not in our network for insurance, so I pay full price because he is THAT GOOD.

If they say it needs done I'd do it now before more trouble comes up. The adult teeth can be damaged and even decay while the baby teeth are still there if they are bad enough.

My boys are older 12, and 10 but the 12yo has 6 months to lose 14 baby teeth or they will be pulling ALL 14, for some reason his teeth just aren't falling out. My 10 year old has molars coming in, 2, and the baby teeth are still there, the dentist is worried that food and bacteria will get stuck under the baby teeth and won't be able to be brushed away and will cause decay, he goes back after new years to get them pulled, thankfully they are both loose and he might get them out on his own.

I wish you were in Texas! We have the best pedi dentist. My daughter was 3 and had to have iv sedation (conscience ) to have all of her teeth capped and the top 4 pulled. It was more traumatic for me than her! I was a blubbering mess in that waiting room. Her teeth were bad from the beginning literally and I put it off forever. If your comfortable then yes, get a 2nd even 10th opinion! The dentist that did her surgery was the 4th we saw. Although I do know sometimes it is necessary because you don't want your baby to hurt. Best of luck love!
