Taxes - Spring,TX

I am so upset. We did our taxes over the weekend and we owe. Apparently the $30,000 in taxes we paid wasn't enough, the government wants more! I had allocated that money and now Uncle Sam is getting it. I don't care who is in the charge, I am tired of paying "my fair share" and then some. I work very hard for my money, yes, its my money, but when I see how the GSA treated our money with so little respect or thought I just want to vomit.

Sorry for the vent. Happy Tax Day!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I just needed to vent. We give to charity and our kids are in college. We need to adjust our withholdings. I just thought I had it covered. Apparently NOT!!!

I made the mistake of watching TV last night and listening to all the stuff coming out about the GSA. Makes me wonder what other departments are doing. Hello Secrect Service and hookers? Really! I probably paid for that too!!!

We are blessed to be gainfully employeed and doing well. I can't complain there. We have worked very hard over the years to get to where we are as most of us do. Everyone have a wonderful evening!

You are not alone...I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo upset too, as I had to pay. Believe me I was beyond upset as I am a single mom working two jobs (no child support) just to make ends meet. I even had a decrease in pay. The problem was our lovely government took away many tax breaks for single and working families.

Dont get me started about our lovely government. You cannot get ahead.....as I say we have to pay for others "welfare."

I had to adjust my withholding and hopefully I will break even and not owe next year!

I sympathize. I won't say how much but we pay more in taxes than I thought I'd make in a year when I was younger. Our taxes alone could support multiple families yet it's not enough according to some people. We need to pay more and more. Meanwhile, lots of people aren't paying ANYTHING in income taxes. I have to write more checks today too and wasn't counting on it either. Cost of living isn't taken into account either. What's a lot of money in one area of the country doesn't go so far in other areas but there's no adjustment for that.

It infuriates me when people have this smug "gee you must have made alot of money" attitude.

They don't see your house payment (inflated values thanks to the banks and their careless lending), the property taxes (also inflated thanks to those same banks and the fake values), your sick kid's medical bills (where the insurance industry has rigged it to the point you get very little for what you pay in premiums), or all the employees and their families who depend on the jobs your business provides. And when that business folds it won't be them helping you out or packing up your stuff. It's a hell of alot different signing the check on the front than on the back.

So I feel you. And agree . . .

PS: It sure would help alot if our govt would stop fighting stupid wars and sending all our jobs overseas . . . just to line their pockets and retain their power. Makes me want to throw up.

@Missy - GSA stands for General Services Administration. Just look up GSA on any reputable news outlet and you'll be informed on what is going on.

S., we paid about the same as you this year and we live paycheck to paycheck so I feel your pain as well.

Years ago, I worked for the Dept of Justice when I was just fresh out of college. My boss asked me to order 9,000 laser pointers (ironically from the GSA) at $9 each so he could give them away. That's $81K for "freebies". I was having a sort of rough time placing that order and swallowing that price tag for something so STUPID! I will never forget he looked me in the eye and said, "Stop worrying! It's not YOUR money!" I can remember taking a big gulp and looking this guy square in the face and saying "Oh, but it IS my money". And that, my friends, was way back in the day before our national debt reached the whopping trillion dollar figure it is today. People have got to wake up and start realizing the kind of waste and overspending our government is doing. Our kids are going to inherit these problems if someone doesn't have the guts to take a stand.

Sorry for the vent, as well! :)

Perhaps more charitable contributions are in order? Set up a college savings plan? Or a change in your withholdings?
If you pay $30,000 in taxes, and you still owe, you need to hire a tax accountant or financial advisor who can tell you how to best maximize your return. It will be the best money you ever spend. Luckily, my husband is a tax auditor (thanks for the job tax-payers! lol), so we know the where and what when it comes to balance. Makes a big difference.

Yes, it can be very frustrating, but I refuse to let the four tax payment days a year get to me. I write the checks assuming that it would be much worse in any other country and count my blessings. I am thankful that I have the money in savings as there have been days in the past when I had to put it on a credit card. And then I think about some of the good things my money is paying for. My husband says I live in "La La Land" but I like it there and don't like the alternative.
