It's called "cowboy casserole" here. This is how I make it http://thecuttingedgeofordinary.blogspot.com/2010/09/cowb...
Hi everyone,
I saw a recipe once for a tater tot casserole and I can't remember where. I have never made anything like it and wanted to try it. I just looked it up on receipes.comand there are quite a few. Does anyone make a casserole with tater tots that they really like?
Thanks!

I love my mom's tater tot casserole. Put your tots in the bottom, layer with a pound of browned hamburger, a can of corn, 8 oz. cheddar cheese, and top with a can of cream of mushroom soup. Very simple, but very tasty.
My husband likes to make his with green beans instead of corn, he adds onions, mixes it all up instead of layering, and we don't use canned soup anymore but make our own powdered base (gluten free for youngest child) and add "Better Than Bouillon" for the flavor.
We make one with tots, cream of mushroom (1 1/2 cans), cheddar cheese soupl (1-2 cans depending on how cheesy), ground beef 1 1/2 pounds and shredded cheese.
Brown beef, mix soups in there, salt & pepper to taste
Tots on bottom of pan, pour above mixture over
Sprinkle shredded cheddar over the top
Bake 350 for about 50 - 60 minutes.
I've tried several variations of this - but this is the one I get my very picky son to eat all the time.
Look for a tater tot hot dish recipe ... Found this one on Pinterest. Looks and sounds similar to the one I grew up with.

I recommend adding more eggs and less milk though.
layer baking dish with frozen tots
sprinkle shredded cheese on them
mix 1 lb. browned ground beef with 1 - 2 cans cheddar cheese soup and 1 - 2 cans cream of potato soup (2 of us in our house don't eat mushrooms)
spread over tots and cheese
sprinkle a little more shredded cheese on the top
bake on 350 for 45-60 minutes (until top is brown and edges bubbling)
We make it..
Brown
1/2 lb of Ground beef
1/2 lb of Mild Italian sausage.
Mix with Cream of mushroom soup.
Shredded cheddar cheese
bag of tater tots, Some get crushed and mixed into the meat. put the rest of the tater tots on top.
Bake, we even add a layer of cheese on the top as well.
When I make it I press ground round into a 9x9 or 13x9, sprinkle with 2T onion soup mix, mix 1 can cream of whatever with 1 can condensed milk then use only half over meat, layerntots on top, bake at 350 for O. hour.
I think we made it by mixing hamburger meat and Lipton Onion Soup mix and putting that in the bottom of a 9x13. Then we'd put cream of whatever on top, a bag of frozen tator tots on top of that, and finally shredded cheddar cheese. It was always pretty yummy and easy...hope you like it if you make it!
I have never even heard of Tater Tot Casserole. Now that I have I am going to make this. It's like a spin on Shepards pie and a lot easier.
Ok I made it.
But I forgot to get the cream of somthing soup. What I did have is gravy. I cooked the hamburger with onions, threw in the gravy. Buttered the bottom of my glass pan, lined it with taters, topped it witht the beef mixture, topped that with more taters and cheese. Baked it and Wa La!
It was so yummy!
I tried one with tots, cheddar cheese, chicken, cream of chicken and some spices and it wasn't very good. For as good as it sounds, I was disappointed and will not make again.
I used to make the basic tatertot casserole when the kids were smaller and they always loved it. That was hamburger, cream of mushroom soup, milk, tots, with sharp cheddar melted on top.
They now prefer cheesy potatoes (hash brown casserole) and ive seen tatertot casserole with similar ingredients. That would probably be a win in our house.
I've tried it with veggies in it like peas, and they didn't complain. Don't think I'd ever put crushed chips like some of the recipies online.
