Tang in the Dishwasher - Who Knew?

Just wanted to pass this gem along to anyone who had no idea that TANG can fix a dishwasher! Thanks to all the smart Moms who answered my post of last week. My dishwasher was putting a major white chalky coating on everything and I thought for sure I was in for a costly service visit. I poured about a 1/2 of a small container of powdered Tang in an empty dishwasher and ran it on a long, hot cycle. Voila! My dishwasher now actually cleans my dishes and the white chalky residue is completely gone. Problem solved and life can carry on as usual. You saved my sanity - again! Thanks!!

Well that's another reason to drink real OJ I guess. I wouldn't want to drink anything that can clean that well (as I sip my Diet Coke, which is so acidic and corrosive it can strip paint from a car...).

Now I really wish I hadn't drunk all that Tang so many years ago. :-( I used it in a spice tea mix.

I bet you could leave an upright glass in there, run it overnight, and wake up to a tasty breakfast beverage! :D

That is interesting though... Kind of makes me wonder what is in Tang to make it so effective... and if I reeeaaaaly want to drink it ever again... (Even though I haven't drank it since I was like, 8-9 years old... lol.)

Oooh, I have some Tang, I'll have to try that. Hubby likes it and I'm always telling him there are too many chemicals in there, this just goes to show, LOL.

Awesome! I will try this. We rent and God forbid the landlord replace anything that is 100 years old in here! Our dishwasher does the same so maybe I will try this! =)

That is cool!

I agree that it is probably the citric acid in it. There's a dishwasher detergent recipe I want to try when we run out of Cascade pacs. One of the ingredients is sugar-free lemonade mix!

vinegar will do the same thing. I forgot what that Mrs Clean ladies name is but she suggests run it once with vinegar and once with bleach. It works great!

isnt this why it was the drink of the astronauts. They are on to something. I would think its all the concentrated Citric acid they put in it to make it sort of orange-ish. LOL I just bought Tang, cause they were out of Country Time Lemonade in the SUPER giant size at Sams Club. I am gonna have to see if it works for myself I am having that same issue.

It's probably the citric acid in it. If you look at most of the dishwasher "cleaners" on the shelves, the main ingredient is citric acid. It is also the second ingredient in Tang (I think), right behind sugar. :)

It is probably cheaper than the dishwasher cleaners that they sell in the stores though.

Never, never heard of this one.
I have used a product called Lemme Shine when I can find it, which is a lemon based cleaner for dishwashers.
And Tang is probably cheaper than the cleaner. I did not know they still made Tang either. That's a product designed for the Astronauts from the 60's.
Thx for the post!
