Check out the Diva Cup (or other similar silicone menstrual cups) as an alternative to tampons and pads. They come in 2 sizes (based on age and whether you have had a child). I found they really do create a good seal to prevent leaking. There is also a much lower risk of toxic shock syndrome (or maybe no risk -- not sure), it's environmentally friendly, less expensive in the long run, and to me, more convenient (not having to carry supplies around in my purse at that time of the month is nice).
Before I got pregnant, I couldn't wear even super tampons alone and had to use a pad because I had such heavy periods, but the Diva Cup allowed me to stop using both. I'm still pregnant with my first baby (due this month!), but I plan to go back to the Diva Cup once I start having periods again.
