Swollen Pinkie Finger

Yesterday my 4 year old was playing with a friend, "Bumping bottoms" and her pinkie got smashed between. She didnt tell me about it till this morning, that her pinkie was hurt. I can tell that it's swollen when I put it up next to her other pinkie. It's also pretty bruised looking on the palm side. I called her doctor's office and they said they could send her out for an x-ray, but there's not much treatment for a broken finger except taping it, maybe. She can still bend it, but she says it hurts to straighten it out. Should I go ahead and get the x-ray? I hate to be an over-bearing mama. I sent her to daycare, because they're having a barbeque and she was really looking forward to it, but I told her I'd come get her early if her doctor thought she should come in.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Should I call them back and schedule an x-ray, even though they said they can't really do anything for her?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, I erred on the side of caution and made her an appt for this afternoon. When I called back, they just made me an appt with her doctor, not for an x-ray, so that seemed weird, but I'm sure it will be fine. I really like her doctor, he's always been pretty great.

Thanks for the advise/stories. I tend to freak out when I don't know what's wrong, but she didn't seem to be in too much pain (usually she is pretty vocal if something hurts!) so maybe it's not broken. I appreciate the support!

My son's fingers got smashed (as in flat!!) in the door when his older brother slammed it.
I was so freaked out, I made my husband take him to the pediatric urgent care - nothing. Tissue damage, no bone breakage (thank God!).
However, it swelled, he had limited movement for about two weeks and it turned purple. We kept ice on it and gave him advil if he really got to where he said it hurt.
the thing I realized and conveyed to my son is the swelling is there to keep they joint from moving while you heal. I think it is fine not to go for x-ray and just keep eye on it - I bet in a few days swelling will go down and the finger will straighten right out:)

May be go to the store later today and get some tape for for finger. I would give her some childrens motrin and let her do her normal activities. See how she does over the weekend. If she is still complaining about it then take her to the doctors. It sounds like it may be sprained not broken since she could move it. If it was broken she would have said something to you yesterday. Have a good weekend. Good luck

I would go in for the xray - this will help you make a determination on what action to take - taping it or just give her Tylenol for the pain....

good luck!

Tape it to her ring finger, keep ice on it when you can, and give her some OTC pain stuff (tylenol) if it really hurts. That's all the doc will do! Sounds jammed, not broken... Hope it feels better!

they wont do anything but tape it, you can tape it if you want, or wait... if it is just swollen it may just be jammed... is it bruised? my daughter has done both and it wasn't broken (from basket ball in gym) until it was bruised at the knuckle) they also have splints if you want to get those at walgreens, that is what they told us to do
