Swollen After Crown

Hi Moms,

I’m writing because my son got a crown yesterday for a big cavity and this morning he’s very swollen and it seems like he’s been biting at his lip and inside part of cheek all night, because he’s got like canker sores all over cheek and lip on that side of the mouth. My question is, has anybody experienced this before? Did you give your kids anything? The dentist assistant told me to just let it run its course, but I know it’s bothersome to him so I just gave him Motrin, but I don’t know if there’s anything else I can do to help him heal.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Even being a Dental Assistant for over 50 years, I still fall back on my Grandmother's remedy. One teaspoon salt in a eight ounce glass of warm water. Swish around mouth and spit out. Do not swallow. Do several times a day. Seems to heal faster. Stress toothbrushing after healing to stop need for crowns.

Lysine is something used for canker sores and mouth issues. It certainly wouldn't hurt and may help heal any leisons quicker. You can get it pretty much anywhere.....even at Wal-Mart.

Have him rinse his mouth several times a day with hydrogen peroxide it will heal his mouth up. The canker sores are probably from the needles they use to numb his mouth. He will probably be uncomfortable for a few days.

My daughter has a crown, and I think the swelling is to be expected. It has probably been further aggravated by him chewing the inside of his cheek...which he probably did subconsciously because it was numb and felt like it was 'in the way'. I remember my daughter's dentist cautioning me to look for this behavior. I'm sure it's a little painful today, so Motrin is a good idea. Orajel might help with the pain, too, but it won't necessarily help it heal. Fortunately, mouth wounds heal pretty quickly on their own. I hope he feels better!

Was he numbed? He may have been chewing on his cheeks and lips because it felt strange, and in turn has created sores. I would say it will have to run its course also because I can't think of anything you can do to help the healing on those

Hello, If it were me I would make an appointment and take him back to the dentist and let him see what is going on. You have faith in your dentist so see what he tells you. It may be the same as the dentist assistant but you would know for sure and he should be able to tell you more what you should do. Do not put anything with alcohol in his mouth as it will burn and make the situation worse, this is what I have been told. Good Luck K. P

My husband seems to always get an abcess...or infection, after having a crown. Our dentist got to where he left the temp crown on a little longer so that if the infection set in, he could do the work before putting the permanant crown on. If it is an infection, he'll have to take some antibiotics to get rid of it. Then, they do a root canal, which is basically taking out the bad part of the root...sounds awful, but hubby said it's really not as big a deal as people think.

Anyway, I think I would watch it and if it doesn't go down before long, take him back or find another dentist. My crown didn't give me any trouble at all!!

Good luck!

D.S- Alot of times kids will suck or bite on their cheeks and lip while it is numb-not realizing what they are doing. Motrin is about the only thing you can do. You can also try a warm salt water rinse. It's very common and will heal over time-just pay close attention to him that he's not sucking on his cheek or lip.

The Motrin will help with the pain a little but cold packs applied to the area for 5 minutes hourly will help reduce the swelling. I don't know why the dentist didn't tell you about this immediately after putting the crown on.
