Switching to Soy Formula

We just switched my 3 week old to Similac Soy Formula (From Similac Advance). She now has a bowel movement at almost every feeding...Good news: she does not seem as fussy or gassy as before; however she does not eat as much of the soy formula as she did the Advance. She also wants to eat more frequently...did anyone else have similar experiences with soy? Does it just take a little while to get used to the switch?

What can I do next?

hey B., I never did formula, but from I have learned through my nursing mom's group, soy is one of the best to go with. The fact that she wants to eat less more frequently mimics that of a breastfed baby. The way it has been explained to me is that a breast baby learns when they are full because the milk changes during the feeding. A bottle baby regardless of what is in the bottle learns to "finish" the bottle. Therefore a bottle baby's stomach is slowly being stretched. The soy blend differs from regular formula which is probably why she is taking less more. Also being only a few feeks old, her eating pattern will vary.

give her time to adjust. I had both my babies (now 5yrs and 3yrs) on soy and the fussiness practically disappeared. My daughter always seemed to drink 4oz then about an hour later (if my memory serves me right on the time frame) she would take 1-2 more ounces. I don't think it was the soy, it was just her. Your little one should outgrow it though.

Hi B. W.,

My daughter was born a premmie. I started out breast-feeding and when I stopped, the doctor put her on soy because the other formulas did not agree with her. Yes, I had the same experience; she will get use to the change. Don't worry. It is better for her health...antioxidants!

Congrats!

It took about a week maybe even a week and a half for my little one to start eating the same again. I think they have to re-adjust to the taste and then it makes there stomach feel different (in a good way of course, but they dont know what good is yet). After he got used to it he went right back to the way he was eating and then quickly increased his eating habits.
