Hi Moms
I am trying to switch my 18 month old son from bottle to cup for milk. He drinks water from the cup but when I give him milk or jices he starts playing, spraying the contents on the floor.
He shows interest in drinking juices directly from the glass but for milk he wdnt do even that.
Any ideas how I can make him use the cup.
Thanks

What can I do next?

Give him time. He is only 18 months. I do not believe in taking their
bottles away. Most times bottles are a great comfort. What I did was
as each bottle was lost it was never replaced. Last one got lost at
the grocery store (son was 2.3 yo). He knew that was the end of the
bottle and never asked. So IMO don't sweat it. Let him enjoy!

It took my son several months to start drinking milk from a cup. He did water no problem, but wouldn't do milk. I just kept offering it, and all of a sudden he started taking it. You don't say if you were breastfeeding or not, but if you were/are, organic milk seems to be sweeter so that might help. Plus organic takes a long time to expire, so you won't be throwing out expired milk that he won't drink before it's bad. I offered the cup at every meal, with no other drinking options. If you don't give him a choice,he will start eventually. Just make bottles for specific times, like before nap or first thing in the morning, whatever works for your schedule. And don't stress or push it, just keep quietly offering it.

I really think people freak out so much about getting their babies off the bottle. I let my son have a bottle a few times a day along with his sippy cup. He got totally off the bottle at about 20 months. He seems to prefer the cups with the straws, so maybe you can try that. Good luck.

How about starting him off with a "sippy" cup? :)

Don't give him the option.

We had in-home care for our son - on his first birthday, there was NO more bottle. He had to use cups. He did great - never had another bottle.

For our daughter to move into the next class at Day Care (which reduced our cost $25/week), she had to be off the bottle. They started working with her using a cup at 10 months. She had her last bottle on her first birthday.

When he is thirsty enough, he will drink it out of the cup. If you cave into his wishes, he'll continue to get what he wants.

Good luck. It's not easy, and it's hard to be calm when you're worrying about their ability to get the proper nutrition.

Perhaps try a different cup? I know some cups have rubbery tips, so that might help - as it's not a bottle, but it's similar to a bottle.

I was more like DanaW (first poster) who just didn't allow another option. He eventually got it, but he was just 10 months old when I introduced the cup. By 12 months he was doing well.

Wish I had better advice. My son was not a bottle boy, so maybe that's why he was easier to transition.
