Swing Set- Rocking Noise

We got a free old Rainbow swing set. It's a massive one, with three swings, two forts, a tunnel slide, etc. Hubby put the posts in the ground with fence posts and cement blocks to stabilize and level. It makes terrible noise when I swing on it, squeaks from rocking the one tower I'm sure.

Hubby swears the thing is safe. He keeps telling me that wood sets make noise.

Do your wood sets squeak?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Let me just add that this is a giant swing, by that I mean, 12 feet designed to support adults.

I have a Rainbow, this is its 3rd summer. We had it installed by Rainbow's contractors so I'd like to say it's as "right" as it's going to be. It's always squeaked when I swing on it. Truth be told the paperwork/manual that came with says we grown-ups are not recommended riders. :0)

We have a Rainbow too. Our's was installed by the company and it does make a noise when an adult swings on it. The rep told my husband that it can hold adults . If you don't want to pay someone from the company to come out , why don't you go to one of their showrooms and try out one to see if they make the same noise. this way you won't waste money and your kids will love the show room , the sets are huge! Good luck and have fun!

We own a Cedarworks set http://www.cedarworks.com and it doesn't make a sound when I swing on it, aside from the normal rope moving sound. No wood creaking at all. We don't have it anchored at all, and it's been in our yard for almost 6 yrs now.

Well, we have a super old metal set that has been in our yard long before we owned the house (like 30 years!!) and I have at times questioned whether or not to let people play on it for the same noise!! ;) I think it's probably fine. I would bet that it's not the wood making the noise but the metal that is inside the wood to hold the swings, etc. in place. If it's stable in the ground, which it sounds like it is, I wouldn't worry. Sounds awesome! Wish I could get that at my house, especially for free! :)

We had a Woodlawn and it never squeaked, however, adults did not swing on it.

Does it squeak with the children are on it?

Check all the bolts and make sure they are tightened properly.

We have a wood set, and it's anchored in the ground with cement. It does not make noise when my kids are on it, but when bigger kids are on it or myself it does. I have only sung on it once because I don't want to ruin in. It's made for kids and while it says it can safely support 150lbs (which I am not) on the swings, that's not what it's meant for.

What do you mean by "rocking the tower?" What is a tower? Swing sets do make noise but I'm concerned about the "rocking the tower" and the use of the word "terrible." Those two don't sound safe. I wonder if it's installed correctly. I've not seen the wooden sets installed with cement blocks and fence posts. It seems to me that would allow too much movement at the ground level.

If the set is stable, meaning it doesn't actually rock, and the joints are tight, I think it would be safe.

You can also talk with a Rainbow representative. If they have an outlet in your area, go and look at a set. If not call or look them up on the Internet and ask them how best to install it.

Here is an address for their web site that shows pictures and talks about safety. From the picture on this page and on their other pages it appears that the set is designed to sit flat on the ground. I wonder if the noise in yours is caused by the cement blocks and fence posts. I think that the most important part of installation is to be sure the set is level. That means that all parts touching the ground are at the same level. This is a tricky thing to figure out. I think it will take a plumb line and level and I'm not sure how to go about doing the measuring.

You can buy accessories so that the set will sit firmly on un-level ground.
