We all retain some when it's hot. I retain a lot of water when I indulge in simple carbs.
Some things to rid us of water-- Grapefruit, asparagus, water melon
Hi Mamas,
For the past two weeks I have had swelling in my hands and feet (I beleive I'm retaining water), especially my feet to the point where it's unfortable to stand for a period of time. The swelling may go down for a day or two, then comes back. I've been drinking tons of fluids mostly water and iced tea (no soda). Any thoughts or suggestions on how to reduce the swelling.
Thanks for all the advice. I'll stop with the iced tea. I don't use salt at the table or for cooking, but there sure is a lot hidden in packaged foods, including my yougurt and salad dressing. I have a check up scheduled with my doctor next week, so I'll be sure to talk to her about it.

Stop drinking the tea...stick with water only.
believe it or not, you might be drinking too much water. or you blood pressure is a little high, or it could just be that your shoes are simply too tight, most women wear shoes are to just a little too small anyway

Make sure you also limit your salt intake. Elevating your feet with some ice and keeping your feet moving (while they're elevated) may help. Also you should also call your doctor. You want to make sure there's not an underlining health issue. Good luck
It's probably related to sodium intake, but please see your doctor to eliminate any possiblity of a serious illness. The fact that your feet are uncomfortable to stand on is a little worrisome. Take care of yourself and God bless.
I agree with the other answers. Only water. Watch all salt intake. (including all the carbs) By any chance are you diabetic or even slightly diabetic. If so contact your doctor he/she might want to give you a pill to help with the water retention. This also can happen when you have high blood pressure. If you are overall healthly with none of these conditions then stick with a lot of fruit and no carbs, if it doesn't go away definetly contact your doctor.
Hello there,
I agree with Erica, stop drinking tea. If it is not de-caffienated it will dehydrate you, which is the exact opposite of what you need right now.
Take a look at your diet---watch salt intake. GIve it two weeks and if no chance tell your doctor.
I had swelling 2 weeks after I started nursing my newborn. A chinese remedy is to heat up sliced ginger root (wrapped in tin foil) at 350 degrees (for 10-15 min). Let it cool down and use adhesive bandage to wrap the sliced ginger around the swollen areas. It will feel warm and comforting even after the temperature of the ginger root has cooled down significantly. Keep it on for a little while (30 min - 2 hrs) and take off when you feel the heat from the ginger juice is gone. Repeat for a few days til the swelling goes down.
Drink water, not iced tea. Tea can dehydrate you you, which will make you retain water. Water will dilute your blood, which reduces the sodium concentration in your blood, pulling sodium and water from your swollen tissues back into your blood vessels, so you can pee it out. It won't happen in one day, but give it several days and you'll probably start to notice improvement.
As the others have said, minimize your salt intake. I have periodic swelling, so I tend to see it as a fairly routine thing, but if it's getting severe or not going away with reducing sodium/drinking water, you can definitely see a doctor to make sure there's no underlying problem.
Call your doctor. Not normal.
