my 15 month old son's head and neck get very sweaty when it is warm, even when it does not seem hot enough to be that sweaty, and when he hasn't been running around. has anyone else ever experienced this? should I call the doctor?

What can I do next?

Our daughter was like that too. Our pediatrician says it's normal becuase a baby's body temperature tends to go up a bit in the afternoon, or when they are tired. However, just like with anything else, if you are in doubt call your pediatrician for ease at mind ;)

Ditto with Dana to check with your ped.

Also, something to consider:

Babies are born with something called "brown fat" (vascularized fat) that helps to keep them warm, because they don't have the ability to shiver yet. It concentrated MOSTLY on their upper shoulders/back/neck. This fat gradually goes away as they get older, and it disappears at different rates.

Quite possibly, your son still has his, and this is the cause of the sweating in those areas... because it isn't an effect that gets turned on and off... it's always there.

Do check with your ped though, since just because something *could* be the case, doesn't necessarily mean that it is.

I personally would bring it up with the pedi DR. It is probably nothing but I would double check. If you notice it getting worse then I would really push as sometimes a sweaty (and often laboring--but not always) baby can be a sign of a serious issue. Go with your gut mama and push as far as you need to push to get answers and so you feel comfortable.

Did you take your son's temperature? Your doctor’s office will probably want to know what it is if you call. Temperature is likely to be the best indicator of illness. Hopefully, you have a good relationship with your doctor’s office so that you feel you can call and ask their advice whenever you feel your son might be sick.

I am not sure what you dress your son in, but perhaps if you dress him lightly. You might ask the pediatrician about hyperhidrosis if your son is sweating in other areas.

Hello, Our 13 year old grandson is also a "head sweater". He is perfectly normal and very active. We have never had an explanation, but he seems just fine.
Good luck with your precious son.

It's perfectly normal. Out of me & my 3 Siblings, my Youngest Brother is the sweatiest. Until this day, he's now 31 years old, he's still the same. Out of my 3 Girls, my Youngest is the sweatiest. It's just some people run on different temperatures. I wouldn't worry about it.

I haven't experienced this but I know it's common for babies with heart defects to sweat a lot when their heart is working extra hard. I'm sorry, I don't mean to scare you! But if anything, I think it warrants a doctor's office visit. I'm sure it's nothing.
