Sweat Bleaching Out Clothes/sheets

For the last decade or so, my sweat has been bleaching out my clothes and my sheets. I've had to throw away shirts after 1-2 wears b/c of this problem. I'm writing aobut it now because recently, it's gotten REALLY bad. My pillowcase looks like I poured a cup of bleach on it. Anyone else have this problem??? Do you know why and how to stop it?? I've done a preliminary search on Google and it looks like people with acidosis (too much acid in the body, hence acidic sweat) may have this problem but if I had acidosis for the last decade or so, wouldn't my drs have caught it during my physical and/or pregnancy checks?? I mean, it sounds like a pretty serious thing...:T I'm gonna call my dr on Monday to get it checked out but I was wondering if any of you have any experience with this. Thanks!

So What Happened?

so I went to the doctor and he basically said that if you sweat a LOT it can bleach out clothes. since it's mostly my bed, he attributed it to anxiety and nightsweats (i get nightmares a lot). makes sense and i'm releived it isn't anything more serious. whew!

I had this happen from some acne medication I was putting on my face and chest years ago.... Bleached my pillows, sheets and shirts. I think another poster mentioned something similar. Are you using any topical products that could be causing this? My clothes tend to get yellow from sweat... Not bleached.

I have used acne soaps that have done what you're talking about. Some thinking about what is in your soap's and moisturizers might yield some info for you.

are you sure it's your sweat? My Benzoyle Peroxide that I use on my face bleaches my pillowcase and washcloths. Also, on my shirts around the neck sometimes it's bleached out b/c I pulled my shirt off/on me when my face was still wet with benzyole peroxide.

I have recently had a couple of tank tops that I noticed some fading in the body of the shirts, where I sweat. They were from last year, so I figured they were just cheap and made with cheap dye. I haven't had it happen with anything else though. Your's sounds pretty extreme, although, it could be something as simple as what you are eating. I heard onion and garlic can be a culprit, everyone's body chemistry is different. I also found this article; but definitely check w/ your Dr too. http://www.ehow.com/how-does_###-###-####_perspiration-re...

Sweat is salty and when it dries it usually leaves a white film. Its the minerals in your sweat maybe. My pillow cases are always ok looking when wash day comes, but my husbands are so yellowed from the oil in his hair and skin. Even after washing I can tell which pillowcase was his.

SS--This happened to my son. It could be a combination of things but definitely I think that sweat is involved. My son is a sweaty, sweaty man.
It could be the quality of sheets or the dye used on them as well.

I would eat lots and lots more fruits and veggies...mostly fruits and veggies actually. If your body is acidic, this will help as fruits and veg are alkaline. Go to www.vegetariantimes.com to find lots of great plant based recipes. Also look at the vegetarian starter kit pdf they have on the website. Trust me, your diet can impact overactive sweat glands...diet impacts every cell in the body. Contact me if you'd like to know more. Good luck...be well. D.

Sweat tends to leave yellowing marks, not bleaching marks, at least in our white chlothes. My old washer would sometimes leave bleach mark on later loads but the patterns are totally random. For armpit stains it is more likely your antiperspirant than just your sweat I would think. I will be reading the answers with interest.

Hi S.S.,

The term Rosa C was trying to remember is hyperhidrosis. Have you mentioned the problem to your doctor? It can be innocuous (over-enlarged sweat glands, as others have mentioned, or normal hormonal changes), but it can also be an indication of a number of other underlying disease processes that should be ruled out. It's not the quality of the perspiration that matters, so much as the quantity.

There is a medical name for over-sweating. Sorry I can't recall but I do have a cousin and sister who had this condition. Cousin had since she was a child and sister had this condition after pregnancy. Both had out patient surgery to reduce the excess sweat glands

Are you sure it's sweat. I've found that cosmetics and acne medications bleach out fabrics. I worked as a maid at a motel and they supplied a wash cloth labeled for make up removal.

I've spotted several pillow cases by using peroxide based cream on my face.

If you find out ANYTHING, please let me know. One of the doctors told me it was acid, but he didn't tell me how to fix it and I ruin everything in the summer. I just got back from Belize, and ruined a brand new swimsuit in the ocean, not chlorine. I don't wear acne medicine around the crotch, and that's where it totally turned white. I eat fruit out the ears, so that doesn't help like one person recommended. I would love it if you would give me a solution when you get one.
