Sushi - Lincoln,NE

My son absolutely LOVES seafood: crab, lobster, fish, shrimp, etc. and so I thought it'd be fun to try sushi. I've always wanted to try it myself too. But of course the whole notion of raw fish makes one wonder if we would like it? Is it spicy?

Any suggestions for some first time sushi food for someone who's never had it? Anyone love it?

Thanks!

Just for fun, here's a "Sushi for Beginners" guide. You've probably already heard most of it from the other responses, but it's just part of a larger guide to sushi. Enjoy! (Sushi is delicious when done right...and now you've made me hungry!)

Sushi... some are spicy some are not.
It will say "Spicy Ahi" and this will be spicy. But not burn your mouth spicy. My 8 year old daughter likes it very much. And my 4 year old son, sometimes. Even if it is spicy.

Sushi... is EITHER raw or cooked/singed/grilled seafood.

There is also Tamago... which is an egg sushi. Cooked.

We just ate Sushi last night for dinner at our local haunt.

Just TRY things.... whatever looks interesting to you.
THEN you will find your own favorites.
There was a Tourist at our sushi place recently... they looked all bewildered. I helped them... and just told them to try things. They were just eating things that was "Tempura" style. ie: fried. They were just having typical sushi fare.
Nothing more adventurous.
So I suggested a few things, and they loved it.

My favorites are:
Ebi (shirmp)
Unagi (Eel, this is cooked/grilled, very good)
Spicy Ahi
Caterpillar roll
Hamachi
Ahi

EACH sushi restaurant... has their own, manner of sushi too.
Meaning, some of their own concoctions.
Some traditional, some not.
Here in Hawaii, we have Pacific Rim type approaches to Sushi too.

The 'green' condiment they serve on the side of the Sushi plate.. .is called "Wasabi."
It will look like a dollop.
THIS... is VERY VERY HOT. Spicy. So bear that in mind.
I would NOT... let a child put that in their mouth.
ALWAYS, mix it with Shoyu (soy sauce). ONLY using a little wasabi, in the mixture.
NEVER, put the entire glob, into your mouth.
It will... burn.

Ginger, is used to clear the palate.

Have tea, with your sushi.
SO, good. Green Tea.
Or Sake.

1. Tempura sushi rolls (has inside it fried battered fish, cucumber, cream cheese, avocado, topped with a delicious sauce that tastes like barbecue and some have one piece of jalapeno).
2. Any kind of California roll
3. or any kind of sushi roll with cooked/steamed meat.

Don't go to some expensive place; try a nice grocery story that prepares it fresh daily before going to a restaurant.

If the sushi has green stuff in it, that's wasabi, and it can be spicy. I like a lot of the milder sushi: eel and tuna are a good introduction to sushi, and spider rolls are delicious. I'd suggest that you avoid octopus your first time out.

Also: your server can help out with some suggestions.

There is a wide variety in shush some with raw fish and some with cooked fish.. Not all of it is spicy.. Also if you do not care for spicy let them know.. They can make any sushi without any spiciness.

To start trying sushi consider. California roll, crab with veggies (very thin slices of carrots, cucumber, avocado) and rice.. Remember you can request things be left out..

Sushi with cooked shrimp nigiri (means seasoned rice with the fish on top) with shrimp on top also tempura shrimp is good.. , If your child is adventurous,, the cooked eel is good with Teryaki sauce..it tastes good and sounds more exotic than it really is..

For raw, start with Salmon (like lox) on the sushi or the raw tuna, because it has a mild flavor.. Less fishy..

If you go to a sushi bar there are rolls that have fried crab.

The sushi that makes people squeamish have the fresh roe or octopus because of the chewy texture while chewing..

Enjoy! our daughter always loved sushi, she still does.. Bet you guys will too.

The rolls are the only thing I eat. I love California rolls, and BBQ eel. Both are cooked. Veggie rolls. Spicy tuna has a small piece of raw tuna. I think those are a good place to start. Also anything with shrimp s cooked.

Be sure to try edamame. Steamed pea pods of soy beans. Mmmmmm

Have fun!

I've been taking my youngest for sushi since she was a baby. I usually order a bowl of rice and a California roll for her. For her I don't chance her eating raw fish although I have never myself had a problem. Choose a restaurant with a good reputation. I started off small but love everything now. My favorties are eel and avocado rolls or tuna rolls. I also love the Nagori which is the raw fish over rice.

I have referred to California Rolls as "sushi with training wheels" on many occasions. Sushi is a style of cuisine. Sushimi is (as I understand it) the raw stuff. Different restaurants will have different offerings. However, you should be able to find a sweet potato tempura roll most places. It's like dessert. Also, tempura shrimp rolls, crab maki, barbeque eel rolls are delicious!

Put a little wasabi (the green paste) in your soy sauce and mix to taste. Start out small and kick it up as you feel comfortable. It really opens the taste buds to the flavors. Too much will hurt. And I like the ginger right on the rolls, rather than in between bites, but that's just my preference.

I also like to order one adventurous roll with my standard favorites to broaden my horizons.

Enjoy.

u can 'ease' yourself into sushi also by trying JB Tempura Rolls with salmon. Mmmmmm sooo yummy!! It's pretty much salmon and cream cheese wrapped in rice roll and flash fried, so its not raw. They are amazing dipped in a little eel sauce. If you wanna try something a bit more adventurous, "tuna tataki" (sp?) is my favorite!! It's raw tuna just a little seared at the ends and dressed in soy sauce. Doesn't taste/feel raw, but it does not come on or in a rice roll, just fyi !.
Dynamite rolls are good, california rolls, rainbow rolls (have pieces of raw fish on top of rice), eel rolls....ooooh! and hawaiian rolls! Like others have said, keep in mind "sashimi" is just raw pieces of fish, sushi is fish on/in a rice roll. Much better if you're just starting out. So if you go to a sushi place, best bet is to start in menu under sushi rolls. Hope this has helped!
And thanx, now i want nothing but sushi, which i cant have cuz im preggo.. arrrgh! I guess ill get those jb tempura rolls ;P

It's soooo good. Only the wasabi (green spicy japanese horseradish paste they serve on the side) is spicy. But it's yummy to mix a tiny bit with soy sauce (you usually get a tiny shallow bowl to do this). Maybe your son will skip on the wasabi. I like to put a piece of the ginger on top and then dip the sushi in my soy sauce mixture. It's our favorite thing to go out to eat for! You can start off with some cooked "sushi". They have sushi rolls made with cooked shrimp or deep fried soft shell crab etc that you can order. Don't order "baked sushi "though. I've seen that at some restaurants and it's just not very good. Oh yeah, my husband's favorite sushi roll is the "spicy tuna roll" so that one is spicy (just a little). you can ask your server. yum!!! Now I'm craving sushi!

In this way, we're pretty stereotypical Southern Californians. I can't remember a time my daughter wasn't eating sushi. Second the CA for the first try. Move on to Tuna Roll then maybe Spicy Tuna. Philadelphia Rolls are great for a first. If you like it, you can get more bold experimenting with different rolls.

Most restaurants will let you know how spicy the rolls are and those mentioned above are not, aside from "spicy" tuna. Its our favorite meal: )
Best to you!

While living in Hawaii I learned to eat sushi and love it. Some of my friends there told me, if you don't like raw fish, use canned tuna fish for your sushi. I really love it. Good luck.

Sushi actually refers to the vinegared rice that is the main ingredient. There are many types of sushi--with raw fish, without, with veggies only, deep fried. There are a lot of non-scary first time sushi to try!

And don't judge "grocery store" sushi with fresh. Fresh is MUCH better!!!

have fun!!
