Is there a good "safe" sunscreen that you would recommend. By "safe" I'm referring to something that doesn't have a list of ingredients that might be harmful to your health. I know wearing any sunscreen is better than going without.

What can I do next?

I asked my dermatologist this last summer. He said that the Nutrogena with the PHYSICAL blockers were the best for kids, and well, everyone. I had to ask the pharmacist for it and he had to look it up. Anyway, it is the one that says Helioplex on it. He said don't use it on a baby under 6 months, but older than that was fine. He also said that because it is not a chemical that goes into the skin, its not waterproof, so you have to reapply.

When my dd was small, I just used zinc oxcide cream...it didn't make her break out and nothing gets through it. You can just us 40 percent zinc diaper cream like desitin, That's the highest concentration sold over the counter.

This site is awesome for sunscreen (and other personal beauty products, too) recommendations:
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

We use Blue Lizard Sensitive; it's rated 2 out of 10 for toxicity and you'll see here that it has great coverage ratings, etc.

We also use Coppertone Kids Pure and Simple when we're at the beach/lake because it's waterproof. It's rated a 3 out of 10 (still very low in toxicity)

i disagree that any sunscreen is better than none. sometimes you have to use it, but there are a lot of times when clothing is a better option than a chemical sunscreen. but if you need it, you need it. i'd try badger, nature made or goddess garden.

Consumer Reports rated Neutrogena w/ helioplex as #1 one year, and the next year Up & Up (Target's brand). I buy Target's when I am near one since we don't have one here, it Neuteogena other times...they both seem to work great, and I've never had a problem. I also use "Ocean Potion face" SPF 45 for out faces, and sometimes bodies too. It is clear zinc...I read about it years ago in Glamour magazine as I have been battling brown spots on my face for over 20 years now....peels @ the estetician, every sunblock under the sun, reapplied hourly, expensive prescription sunblock, retin-a, hydraquinone, custom blended foundations...it didn't matter what I used.....5 minutes outside and they would reappear as dark as ever. I tried the Ocean Potion and it works great! It is less than $2 for a little tub, and a little goes a long way. My bestie who is Cambodian uses it on her whole body, she has sensitive skin and is afraid of getting dark as she said that in her culture it is very undesirable and her mother would have a fit! Good luck !

If you have a whole foods, mothers or henry's market near you they all sell safe and natural sunscreen. Me and my kids all break out from some of the ingredients in coppertone and banana boat and so we only use the natural kind. One good brand I think is called "sun".
