Sunscreen - Granville,MA

HI, I know this question has been answered already, but I did not take notes. Sorry. I'd appreciate any suggestions for a safe, chemical-free sunscreen for my 3 month old. I obviously do not plan on exposing him to the sun purposely for a long period of time, but at a lake front cottage for a week on vacation, it's inevitable that his fair skin will 'see' the sun. Thank you.

I believe we're not supposed to put any sunscreen on infants until they are six months. My daughter's pedi recommended a white cotton hat with a big brim and a beach umbrella. I also recommend thinking about SPF clothing for him.
Best of luck,

I would really just use a big umbrella a hat and light clothing for a 3 month old, but Dr. Mercola makes chemical free and safe sunscreen. I think it is pretty much zinc oxide. you can get it at www.drmercola.com. I think that is the site.

i use Earth's Best/Jason mineral sunscreen found at Whole Foods or natural section of most grocery stores. It gives good protection and my son never breaks out in hives like with many other so called hypoallergenic sunscreens. I would minimize his exposure still and check with the pedi to make sure it is ok to use sunscreen on a 3 mo old.

you really may want to check with your pediatrician - I know that ours said no sunscreen until 6 months (which was what the bottles of sun screen say) but he/she may know of a good alternative.

I used Burt's Bees sunscreen on my twin girls starting at 6 months. It is a bit dry so you have to put it on fast. Before 6 months, though, I think you just cover them with long sleeves/long pants and hats since I don't know if you can use sunscreen before 6 months. Check with your doctor.

Hi there,
I've read the back of the badger brand sunscreen and it seems to be pretty much just zinc oxide which is used in a lot of diaper balms. I'd check that out if I were in your position. Have dun on vaca!

Hi, I second all of the responses telling you to call your ped. but...I also completely understand that your child is going to get some sun on vacation. My daughter has very fair skin and I use Aveno baby - I use this brand as sunscreen and baby wash. My daughter has had skin reactions to other products. If you get the okay - I really like this product. Enjoy your vacation

Hi there,

If it were me, I would buy sun protective clothing (including a hat). It is a bit expensive, but I believe well worth it. One good company (which I buy stuff from) is www.solartex.com. Also, make sure you have a nice beach umbrella.

BTW, maybe someone else knows the answer but I thought you should not sunscreen on babies until they are a certain age...like six months.

Best of luck and enjoy your vacation.

There is a sun screen sold at Babies R' Us that does not contain chemicals that absord into the skin. The brand is Minerals. I dont find them to be anymore expensive then Banana Boat or other brands. There is a produt at Target as well by Calafornia Babies, however it is outrageously expensive.

After 6 months, Badger is best. We take our baby our for short periods to allow him to build a tolerance to sun - then we don't have to slather on cream all the time. A lot of babies are severely deficient in Vitamin D because we don't let them get any sun at all!

Hi AD,
Arbonne, ABC Sunscreen spf 30. It's one of the few sunscreens on the market that can be used on babies UNDER 6 months old.

Contact me if you're interested in purchasing it.
Thank you,
K.

As you have heard from many of the Mom's here, it is recommended not to use sunscreen (and bug repelants) until your baby is 6 months. My Pedi. said that this is because they can develop a high sensitivity to it later on. I know it is not easy, especially where you will be outside on vacation, but I would go with the umbrella shade and SPF clothing. Another site that sells them is www.onestepahead.com.

My daughter has sensitive skin and I found that California Baby (Target, Whole Foods) works great for her.

Give a quick call to your pediatrician to get their opinion and enjoy your time at the lake!
