Sunblock During School Time

We use California Baby and Blue Lizard Sensitive, both very low in toxicity. We apply before school and it does seem to last through the day. You may try that and then throw a sunscreen stick in her backpack for face touch ups when needed.

Wow I am surprised she is getting burned in the short recess period. Is she really fair completed? We are not having that problem and I live fairly close to you. :)

Instead of keeping all those chemicals on her skin all day everyday I would have her wear a hat and a solar block long sleeve shirt. Otherwise you could give her a sunblock stick and have her put some on her nose and cheeks just before she goes out.

I like California Baby - non-toxic and very effective.

We don't use sunblock during school, but when we swim we use Coppertone Sport (or the generic version), and it stays on well.

I like the 100 rated Neutrogena, but not the waterproof one. It stains clothes.

Shade may be her best friend...large brimmed hat. If she is not much on hats you can put sunblock on her and maybe even send some with her to reapply.

We use Melaleuca's Sun Shades. Our first outing last year, we applied 15 minutes prior to our daughter going out. We were outside for close to 6 hours (or more) and did not reapply. My daughter also swam. She was not in the least bit red. I can't say this is the norm (because we normally reapply) but it works wonderful. Additionally, it does not have the chemicals that others have.

Is she old enough to apply her own sunscreen? Studies have found that sunscreens will NOT protect you for hours and hours at a time. If she is not old enough to apply it herself, I would talk to her teachers, and even to the principal, about applying it before they go out. Kids should not be going out in the sun unprotected.

We do not use harsh chemicals on our children, which means we do not use sunscreens that are listed as hazardous by the EWG. We use Badger sunscreen for our kids, which has the same ingredient list as California Baby but is a bit cheaper. However, some schools and facilities have rules against teachers touching the students, and since Badger is a rub-on sunscreen, we use KINeSYS Sunscreen in this case, the only sunscreen recommended by the EWG if you must use sprays. ETA: If neither the teachers nor the principal will respect this issue, please buy some sun-blocking clothing (most clothes are low SPF, but you can buy specific clothing with a much higher SPF).

any chemical that will be effective on her skin that long will also be leaching chemicals into her system.

I know that our schools cannot apply it, they require a doctors note to do it. That way if the kid has a reaction to it they are not liable.

I think they need to put it on themselves or learn to stay in the shade.

My little one is fair skinned and I use the Coppertone for Kids Spray - the teacher sprays it on him before they go out and I am sure a few other kids too (I do not mind) I have to be mindful of this because skin cancer runs in my family and the teacher has understood so far. His previous day care providers requested it as part of their "survival kit" along with a change of clothes and all that jazz! I would talk to the teacher and see if this is an issue or not. I feel your pain too mama our Spring came early and harsh didn't it?

I'm not sure I really follow. On the one hand, isn't she old enough to be responsible herself (i'm guessing 7). Don't have one that old, so I just am asking.

On the other hand, if she's already walked home and been burning up multiple times - wouldn't she already have sunburn?

And I would think that effect would only be from the walk from the bus. Maybe she's playing along the way (hence the burning up red?).

But you live in Chicago. How far away is this bus stop that she is getting sunburned?
