Summerlin Vs. Spring Valley Hospital

I'm 30 weeks pregnant, and just learned that the hospital I have chosen, Spring Valley Hospital, has a mandatory 2-3 hour nursery stay after the delivery. I am trying a VBAC, so my hospital options are limited to Spring Valley and Summerlin. I would have to switch doctors to try a VBAC at Summerlin, but that does not bother me.

Does anyone have experience wit the mandatory nursery wait? It sounds horrible to me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I haven't delivered yet, but I did take a tour of the the hospital that wasn't a scheduled tour. Apparently, if they are not busy in the maternity ward, you can stop by and get a private tour. (You need to call ahead, however.) We got an explanation about the mandatory nursery stay. There aren't enough nursery nurses to take the baby's vital signs (namely the blood pressure) after the baby is born. Therefore, the baby is usually in the nursery for 2 hours while they take the blood pressure every thirty minutes at some point in the first three hours after birth. (However!) It is the case that if the nursery ward isn't busy, your husband can wheel the baby back and forth to your room in between blood pressure checks - or at least hold the baby in the nursery. Unfortunately, the nursery is closed between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., and 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. This is when they do shift changes, and they discuss individual babies in the nursery, so under HIPPA laws adults can't be in the nursery. So, special arrangements would have to be made no to keep the baby in the nursery that entire time.

So, right now, it will be up to my husband to make sure that the baby is either held in his arms in the nursery, or wheeled back and forth to my room if the nursery is busy and the nurse cannot bring the baby back to me in the intervals between blood pressure checks.

You can refuse to allow them to take the baby away. They can't do anything to your baby without your consent. He/she is your baby - you will be the one to make all the choices for your baby, even in the hospital (eye ointment, vitamin K shot, etc...). If they insist and you don't feel like arguing, is there someone you can send to stay with the baby while in the nursery (hubby, your mom, a friend, etc)?

If you'd rather not deal with that (and I wouldn't) then Summerlin may be a better choice for you. Good luck on your decision and congratulations on the new baby coming up!!

I have delivered 2 of my children at Summerlin and there was no mandatory nursery stay for my first child. He was with me constantly. For my other son who was delivered at Summerlin, he was a pre-term baby and was in the NICU for 2 hours (because he was early and having trouble breathing at first), but then with me for the rest of the time we were there. I have found the nurses at Summerlin to be AMAZING and although I live almost 45 minutes from that hospital, that's the one I would choose to deliver any future children at. Good Luck!!!

My nephew was born at Spring Valley and they took him to the nursery to clean him up and check him out and his shots and then brought him to the room. My brother stayed with him the whole time. Maybe took half an hour.

I have not heard of this. I had both of my girls at Spring Valley, the most recent 5 weeks ago. I had a c-section so my daughter and my husband went to the nursery shortly after I delivered. She was with me in the operating room for 10-15 minutes before going to the nursery, then she came to be with me once I was in my room. She and my husband went to the nursery together. He held her and hung out with her until I was in my room about an hour and a half later. Nobody ever mentioned anything about a mandatory nursery wait. The only reason she was there as long as she was, was because they needed to make sure I was okay, not the other way around.
