Hi Ladies, I am 27 weeks pregnant and suffering from horrible lower back pain. I was on my feet all day for work and have now switched to alternating between standing and sitting. My entire lower back is on fire and I have a shooting pain down my right but cheek and into my leg. :( I have tried stretching and having my husband massage it and they both relieve the pain, but only briefly. Tylenol has no effect at all. I still have a long way to go and hate think that I am going to feel this way till delivery. Anyone else have these issues and what did you do to find relief. Thanks :)

What can I do next?

I went from sleeping with no pillows at night (I was a stomach sleeper) to using 6 pillows all situated around me. I also had a few maternity massages that were no where near a regular massage but they really helped with the common aches and pains that are brought on by pregnancy
Good Luck

A little heat would usually help me. Also, a chiropractor! They do wonders! Mine was really intense for about a month and went away after that. Little boogers like to lay a certain way I guess! Good Luck.

I get sciatic pain all the time when pg. The only thing that works for me is to lay down on a tennis ball. It HURTS but makes it feel so much better. You kind of massage yourself with the ball. You can do it in bed or on the couch or lay on the floor and do it.

It could be that baby is led in a certain way and that is causing you to have back pain , which standing most of the day won't help. Talk to your employer to see if you can maybe sit more often? I would also look into a chiropractor like a previous poster mentioned , or maybe have a weekly massage? Call a few spa's in the area to see which offer massages specifically for pregnant women.

I hope it passes soon

I couldn't have survived my pregnancies without the help of a chiropractor. With my first baby, I'd never been to one before and was really leary. It helped me so much. I didn't hesitate with my second baby.
You may have a pinched nerve or something so you should really get checked out. Also, sleep with a pillow between your legs. It helps keep your hips aligned while you are laying on your side.
Talk to your OB. Mine was fine with me seeing a chiro.

I hope you get some relief soon.

When I was pregnant, I had horrible lower back pain. I talked to my OB about it and he sent me to a massage therapist who was licensed and educated about massage during pregnancy. There were also some electrical impulse machines that really helped me. I don't think I could have gotten through my pregnancy without those things! Talk to your doctor. And usually since it is medically necessary, its covered by your health insurance. Good luck and hope you find relief!

All 3 of my SIL's wore back support braces for pregnant women because the babies tend to run large in the family :) I was very lucky to have time to do yoga throughout which helped tremendously but the women in our family swear by the braces. They are sort of like what the UPS or Sparkletts guy would wear when doing heavy deliveries.

Chiropractic! Add in massage and acupuncture if you want but Chiro works the best! And ice will help with the pain an any inflammation as well.

Get a pregnancy support belt. You wear it under your clothes and it helps take some of the strain off your back from all the baby weight in the front. It seems silly, but it's amazing how well it works for such a simple fix. Also, since my 1st pregnancy (7 years ago!) I've been sleeping with a body pillow. I sleep with it between my knees, and when I was pregnant I wedged it under my baby-belly for support while I slept. A physical therapist can help you manage the pain with ultrasound or deep muscle stimulation (but double check on safety during pregnancy) - that was the only thing that finally cured my sciatic pain. Good luck!

Being on your feet all day, exacerbates it.
How is your work situation?
Do you have to be on your feet all day?
Can your Employer allow you to just sit more?
If you have a Doctor's note, that might help. To show your employer.

Back pain varies and per pregnancy.
Sometimes it is muscle strains, sometimes it is the sciatic nerve being pinched. Per pregnancy.
Thus, with nerve pain, it can be due to alignment or inflammation pressure on a nerve. Or just muscle strains.
Progressing pregnancy weight, also taxes the body. And can create pains. The ligaments also changes.

Try just staying off your feet when you are home.
Get Hubby to help with the house.
You don't want to strain yourself, and then get contractions.
Stay hydrated as well. Drink lots of water.

Try talking with your OB/GYN about it.
I'm sure this happens a lot.

Echoing others - it's definitely siatica. I had the same thing - nothing will get rid of it completely but ALL of what the others mamas are saying will help you manage it. Yoga is great - the instructors should also be able to give you advice on stretches and best positions to sleep in (as well as worst ones!). Sitting on a balance/exercise ball is great to help strengthen - also you can get little saucer like ones to sit on at work (but you need to build up your strength, so only use a bit at first). I LOVED aqua aerobics - anything in a warm pool will feel amazing. Also - buy a pair of birkenstocks - the correct shoes to help your posture make a world of difference. (I know they're not exactly attractive, but trust me - they work a treat!) The back supports can help too as can a chiro who specializes in pregnancy. Acupuncture as well. And yes, heating pads or hot water bottles - or ice. It's old school, but it works - you're trying to bring down the inflammation and that's the most straight forward way to do it. The heat pads you strap to your back might also help during work (just check they're ok during pregnancy....). Good luck!!!

Yoga. Period. The only thing that helped me really manage the sciatic pain. I would do massage and use the back pillow, but going to pregnancy yoga classes really curbed the pain and helped with sleep. It also strengthens for labor and think I got my pre-baby body back faster as I could (had to) do the yoga throughout. Best! I know how uncomfortable and frustrating it is!!!

PS: I have scoliosis, S-curve, so I knew when I got pregnant I'd have to really watch it. Man, I'm glad I did.

Sciatic pain! EWWW! MAN! That hurts. Something fierce. Mine started towards the end of our pregnancy (I'm currenlty 35 weeks, let's hope it doesn't do it again) and went into the month after he was born. I ended up having to have the cortosone shot, which was a godsend!! I don't know how to help while you're prego - but if it continues after - look into it. it's totally safe to do while breastfeeding!

Sorry you're in such pain!

Sounds like it could be the sciatica nerve... ask your OB about it.
