Suggestions for Ob's Who Support Natural Birth Options?

Does anyone have suggestions for a good OB who is open to and supports the idea of a drug free birth? I live in Edina so I prefer a clinic in the Minneapolis area. I just moved here and it seems like there are so many clinics I don't know where to start.
Thanks so much!

S.

I never used an OB, just the Midwives at Park Nicollet. I had a drug/intervention free birth with a midwife at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

Fairview Riverside Women's Clinic would probably support you with that. They have midwives and OB's on staff. I really liked them.

Congratulations, S.! Currently going through my 3rd pregnancy, I have to say that there is a big discrepancy between OB/GYN's and natural birth. Also, there is a difference between a drug-free birth and a no/ low intervention birth. If you are intending to do this nature's way as much as possible, than an OB/GYN would probably not be much help since they are taught to treat birth as a disease and something that women can't do on their own. So, a midwife maybe the way to go with you. I birthed my first 2 babes with the Health East midwives group and at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury, and had 2 completely different birth experiences. If you want to stay close to Edina, Morningstar Birth Center is opening a new free standing birth center just off of Hwy 100 and Excelsior Blvd in St Louis Park. You can google or Facebook them. I actually just met them earlier this week and it's a high probability that we will transfer care to them.

I'm also going to suggest that you read Birthing from Within, I forget the author, but it's a great book on empowering a woman to actually birth the way she was made. And also there is a book by Heni Goer that goes through the pro and cons of many aspects of pregnancy and birth; glucose testing, epidurals, spinal blocks, EFM, vitamin K shot.

Feel free to PM me, and I can give you a quick recount of my 2 births - one had interventions that almost got to c-section, and the other only had one intervention (breaking water). Sorry if this seems like a lot of information, but I fully believe that birth needs to be put back into the mother's control and there is a place for medical need, but it's relied on way too much in our culture.

Good luck with whatever your choice is!

S.,

I just had a drug-free birth 2 months ago with my OB (Dr. Block). The name of her clinic is Clinic Sofia (it's in Edina). The nice thing about her practice is that it is a women's-only clinic and she is the only OB there---so she's pretty much guaranteed to be there for your delivery. (The last thing I wanted was to get to know my OB after so many appointments and then find out she wasn't "on call" when it would be time to go to the hospital.)
I believe she only delivers at Fairview Southdale. She's done both of my deliveries now--drug-free! Good luck!

I love my OB NP at Park Nicollet in St Louis Park. Her name is Patricia Kane. I had both my babies at Methodist, drug-free and low/no-intervention. Great experience both times. The nurses I had in labor and delivery were fantastic. I felt like they encouraged and welcomed my desire to have a drug and intervention free labor.

I went to Oakdale Ob/Gyn for all three of my children AND used a doula. It was a great combination for me. Good luck!

S.,

Some GREAT resources are available at the Blooma yoga studio. The owner (Sarah) is a doula, and has been at over 300 births. She has details on all the hospitals, many OB's, midwives, and can give you some great direction.

Here is there website:

HCMC is supposed to be a great hospital to deliver at for a drug free birth. They provide doula's as part of your birth.

I delivered my second and third babies at St. Joseph's in St. Paul and they were very used to drug free labor and delivery there as well. I used midwives though, not an OB.

Good luck and congratulations!
Jessica
