Sudden Onset of Menopause?

Can menopause onset suddenly? I've always been led to believe it was a gradual process. I'm 40 and for the past year, my periods have been regular - every 28 days, with a few making a surprise appearance at 21 days. Nothing has been getting lighter. Now i'm suddenly 12 days late. What the heck? DH had a vasectomy 5 years ago, but never got cleared because we moved. But in 5 years since, there hasn't been one scare. Until now... what is going on??? Frankly i'm too scared to take a home test. I'd rather live in denial and have a bunch of people tell me it's a sudden onset.

So What Happened?

Well the stress broke me down and I took two HPTs. Most stressful 3 minutes of my life! They were both negative. Phew. So I'm guessing it's the old pre-meno thing starting to take affect. FINE!!! I hope I never get my period again! What a pain!

Menopause means you haven't had a period for a whole year. During peri-menopause your cycle become less regular and slowly winds down before coming to a complete stop. For some women this can take 10 years.
I'm 49 and I've been dealing with night sweats and hot flashes on and off for about 6 years and my period can range anywhere from 2 weeks to 45 days. 12 days late doesn't phase me at all anymore. The only way I can tell if a period is coming is I'll crave salt and my face breaks out for a few days beforehand. If it means an end to the 'power surges', I'm looking forward to no more periods.

Stress, hormones, or both... go get a blood test and have them check your levels. Sometimes we just need a jump start to get things back to normal.

BTW, I'm going to be 40 this year and I am perimenopausal based on day 3 tests where my FSH hormone is elevated early in the cycle. I have 26 to 28 day, regular cycles, but I am experiencing early change.

I've never had a friend that's husband's vasectomy went awry. I'd say there is something going on with you other than pregnancy but not necessarily menopause either. Go check it out if you dont have a period next month. Sometimes we skip a month for the helluvit.

A late period or skipping a month doesn't necessarily mean that you're pregnant or menopausal. I'd say you're just "fortunate" to have not skipped a month before. I also suggest that a gradual start of menopause can be irregular periods. When you said sudden onset I was picturing numerous menopausal symptoms. You've got one symptom that may or may not be the beginning of menopause.

So, relax. If you don't have a period next month then see a gynecologist to determine if the cause is something that needs attention. In the meantime, if you're anxious about a pregnancy, take the test and get that worry off your mind.

Menopause is nothing to be worried about. It's a natural process which can be uncomfortable for some women but not all. A blood test will show a change in hormone levels if you are starting menopause. If you're as anxious as your post seems to indicate to me, I'd go sooner rather than later for that test too.

In the meantime, do some research on menopause while considering that a missed period is not a bad thing. You will have another one. In menopause they're usually somewhat irregular and as you said do not just stop one month.

Menopause was not difficult for me and I love not having periods.

Hi - I know this is an old post but perhaps someone is willing to share similar experiences.
I am 41 years old. My last period was on 5/11/15. I freaked out when I didn't get a my June period. I have been regular since the age of 12! I have never missed a period when I didn't expect to. My DH had a vasectomy and we have never had any scares either. I took 2 HPT's and both were negative. I called my gynecologist and the nurse said "We don't do anything with you only having missed one month." I did have the usual menstrual cramps and so I thought I was going to at least spot, but there was nothing.
Today is July 2 - so if I don't get it in 2 weeks, that will be 2 months missed. I don't have any pelvic pain or anything unusual going on.
Any ideas? How common is this sudden onset?

it's possible, i guess, but unlikely. menopause isn't a smooth process by any means, but it does take time for the most part.
your last sentence makes me giggle.
go take a home test.
