Hi ladies-
I am currently 7wks pregnant. I had some spotting last week and my obgyn sent me for some blood work and an ultrasound. My obgyn called me last night with the results. He told me I have a subchoronic hematoma. I have to go for a follow up ultrasound at 10wks to see if there are any changes.
Has anyone ever had this?????
Did you carry full term?
Was your pregnancy considered high risk?
I'm a little shocked and concerned. I don't know anyone who has had this and I'm not sure what to expect.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma around 9 weeks - I am now 38 weeks. It was VERY small and I was told that it is VERY common and was only put on pelvic rest. By the time I had my 22 week ultrasound, it was gone. Good luck to you!

I also had a subchronic hematoma...I bled about 8 weeks into my pregnancy...I unfortunately did have a miscarriage but it had NOTHING to do with the hematoma...it was chromosomal at 12 weeks. Basically the md said that the blood is from the implantation and instead of bleeding when you implant, it creates a pocket and it bleeds out later. So all in all you should be fine!!!!

Hi L.,

This is a topic I know a lot about! I had this with both of my pregnancies. What determines if this is a big deal or not is the size of the hematoma. With my 2nd pregnancy, I had a small hematoma and it just required some moderate bed rest and pelvic rest, and it cleared itself up at about 12 weeks and caused no further problems. When I was pregnant with my son, I began hemorrhaging heavily and thought I was having a miscarriage. The hematoma was very large and the fear was that it could grow and basically suffocate the fetus. I ended up on bed rest from 7 weeks until I delivered, because every time I would stand up and start walking around, I would have severe hemorrhaging and go into early labor. Needless to say, both of my kids are healthy and happy. Their routes to getting here were just different!

I think I was on the far end of the extreme in that my hematoma stayed with me for the pregnancy and continued to grow which became a risk for placental abruption as well. But as I said, with my daughter, it was minimal and basically caused no problems. I had found a web site forum that discussed this topic when I was on bed rest, and I remember that people had a variety of experiences with this, and most had a very happy outcome. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Since you already have 3 children, I bet yours will resolve and you will be just fine!

it is pretty common, & usually nothing to worry about. They generally resolve themselves.
I had one at 9weeks.....& my twins are now 5 1/2. I carried them to 36 weeks (avg for twins)

congrats & good luck

I am a womens health nurse practitioner, so am very familiar with this. What I tell my patients is that it is basically a bruise behind the placenta that usually occurs with implantation. It is a very common occurrence and can lead to bleeding/spotting in the 1st trimester. These hematomas usually resolve on their own by the end of the 1st trimester. You should be on strict pelvic rest (nothing in the vagina, i.e. no sex) until it resolves, but other than that, there is no complication in terms of your pregnancy. Of course, if the bleeding increases or you experience pain, you should let your doctor know right away.

Does that help?

My neighbor/good friend has this. She had thought she miscarried because she blead so much. The ultrasound had showed a heartbeat and doctors told her not to worry. She carried full term and had a perfectly healthy baby boy who is now 3 1/2 mo old. Her pregnancy was not considered high risk and she had no other complications or bleeding. Hope this helps.

Hello L.! I have a 9 month old son. When I was about 3 months along they found a subchorionic hematoma on the placenta as well. They are VERY common I found and they just have to monitor it very closely. We had an ultrasound every 3 weeks or so for the remainder of the pregnancy. It grew larger at one point and then smaller, they are very strange. I carried full term and everything was fine. I say if your doctor does not want to do u/s very often, find another doc. It is very important to see what it is doing.
Good luck!

Hi L.,

I had a subchoronic hemorrhage with my second son. But mine was not a normal pregnancy. I was told I'd never get pregnant again and did. I also spotted the whole pregnancy so it was high risk. My son was born 10 weeks early but I can't say for sure if the hemorrhage was the cause. After week 20 the hemorrhage appeared to be gone.

Are you spotting at all? Has your doctor suggested bedrest or modified bedrest? Because of my spotting, I was on bedrest from week 5 - 13.

Fell free to e-mail if you want to chat.

hi L.-
i did have one at 6 weeks and actually thought i was miscarrying.
turns out it was my uterus pushing most of it out.
i was informed by many sources that it will either stay the same, resolve itself on it's own, or grow(which is not great.
i did still have the bleed for about three months after that
with two other episodes of serious/heavy spottting and it finally "resolved itself"

i carried full term and was not considered high risk but
i had pretty strict restrictions; no lifting ( which sucked with my 21/2year old), no sex, no exercise.

try not to read too mucn on the internet- it can really freak you out.

feel free to ask me any more if you like

Hi L.,

I had a subchoronic hematoma at 12 weeks. I had just passed my 12 week mark and thought I was in the clear. I went to work and then went to the bathroom and (tmi) when I wiped there was blood. There wasn't a lot but it was definitely there. So, I called my OB's office and they told me to go to the ER (and panic set in). This was my first pregnancy by the way and it was considered high risk because I am diabetic. Anyway, everything turned out fine! If I remember correctly it was just a pocket of blood that pooled between the placenta and uterus and it was just finding a way out. My OB put me pelvic rest for a week and then it was back to life as normal. I had a relatively normal pregnancy after that and my daughter is almost 18 months and thriving! Don't worry too much (easier said than done) but do take it easy and try not to over extend yourself. Take care!
