Get a good quality adult umbrella for him. The bigger ones keep you more dry too!
Can anyone recommend a good umbrella for my seven year old? He is understandably upset with the spokes breaking, the Velcro failing, and the end caps falling off the cheap character ones we buy. Ready to spend real money on a replacement but want to buy something which will hold up. Don’t want to waste more money, don’t want to have more disappointment. Thanks. F. B.

LL Bean, Lands End, REI, North Face, etc. look at outdoorsy brands like that.
ETA: also if it rains a lot why not get a good rain coat with a hood? I know my Seattle friends laugh at people with umbrellas :-)
I highly suggest the gust buster brand. I got mine from amazon but they have their own website as well. They have a life time warranty, if that is important to you. I live in Nova Scotia where wind is pretty much a constant and ruined at least 4 umbrellas in the wind and rain waiting for the bus with my daughter. I found the gust buster and its pricey but I have had mine for over 2 years now and still 100% intact and believe me the winds here are usually what some get here only during mild hurricanes.
Especially as the weather gets colder, think about getting him a good rain hat (look online).
Totes makes good small but sturdy umbrellas.
We use to walk to school from kindergarten till we moved and started taking the bus in the 4th grade.
We never had an umbrella that lasted really long - they needed replacing every few months.
Eventually we got hooded rain slickers - and that worked pretty well for walking to/from school.
If you like umbrellas and can accept they break often - then save by buying a supply in bulk - like a half dozen at a time.
You'll use them up quickly enough.
