Stress and Missed Periods

First of all, there is no way I am pregnant. My husband had the big snip about 6 mos ago, and did go to his follow-up visit 3 mos ago. He was given the all clear. :)
However, I have been under a huge amount of stress lately (buying, selling, moving a house). I haven't had had a period since April 1, and I have been pretty regular since I resumed after the birth of my 10 mo old. I am not breastfeeding anymore, either, so that's not hindering things.
I am kind of enjoying the "freedom", but my husband thinks I should see a doc. He thinks something could be wrong (I do have a history of ovarian cysts). I don't see the big deal! Even if it is an ovarian cyst, they always go away on their own.
So, my question is- have you ever lost your period due to stress? And how long would you go without your period before seeing the gyn?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I'd probably wait one missed cycle to see if I just "skipped" a cycle and resume in 8 weeks, but after that I would want to know what was going on. My SIL died of colon cancer when she was 35, and her "missed period" was one of the early signs that something was wrong, but she ignored it. (I think the cancer started in her colon but moved into her uterus, which is why her periods stopped; I don't think it was just the cancer in her colon that did it.) She also started losing weight effortlessly, but was glad for that, having always struggled with her weight (I guess she thought her metabolism was kicking into high gear for some reason?)

Most likely, it's not cancer or anything majorly wrong like that, but it's not normal, so I would be looking into it, in case it's a signal of some underlying health issue that *is* a problem.

I thought mine was late due to wedding stress. N.O.P.E.

Pregnant.

But we don't have the big snip to fall back on.

Stress can affect things, but what would a call to your doc hurt?

My period took a long time to return after my baby was born and when I called to check into that, the ob/gyn told me unless I haven't had one for 6 months or I'm having some other symptoms I shouldn't worry.

Oh M., you and I are in the EXACT same situation! How funny is that? Well not funny ha ha but...anyway. I haven't had my period since JANUARY! I have been under enormous stress also (baby admitted to hospital with severe blood infection had surgery, hubby laid off the week we got back from the hospital, finanical issues related to lay off, sigh...) I have even been taking natural progesterone cream for the las four months but nothing. Not preggers...hubby had the snip over a year ago and my Dr said if were to fail it would do so in the first 6 months. So she ordered bloodwork and is checking my thyroid levels. She also gave me a prescription for a progesterone pill to take instead of my cream and this is supposed to "kick start" my cycle. She also said it would make me feel better (less tired, more energy). So I guess my advice would be to go ahead and see your Dr. and have them test you for thyroid issues as well as check your hormone levels...both of which can get knocked out of whack after you give birth.

Good luck and I'll be praying for you!

I don't know how old you are but once I was in my late 30's/early 40's - there was no more regularity in my periods anymore.
Now that I'm in my late 40's my personal record is 51 days between cycles - but it's definitely peri-menopause - the hot flashes confirmed it for me.
Moving and caring for a 10 month old baby - definitely stressful and stress will have an effect on your cycle.
I'd wait and see what happens over the next few months.
Eat as healthy as you can, try to get enough exercise and sleep (hard with a 10 month old, I know), make sure you take a multi vitamin - it can't hurt.
If nothing happens by August - go see the dr.

Given your history, I think it's safe to just wait this one out. See a Dr/ NP/CNM if you haven't had a period in 6 months to make sure it isn't caused by a thyroid disorder or other hormone imbalance. Also, you might want to purchase a pregnancy test at the dollar store just in case. Unfortunately, all things are possible when it comes to reproduction. I've had a woman with a tubal ligation and her husband who had a vasectomy in my office and they were indeed 4 months pregnant. I've gone as long as 8 weeks between periods so it's possible this is just stress causing you not to ovulate. If the pregnancy test is negative, just relax and wait. CNM and Mom of 3

ABsolutely - stress can cause irregularities in your cycle. Right now you're about 6 weeks late - it could be that one ovary is off schedule. I bet that you'll get it at the 2 month mark - around July 1st.

I'll all kinds of irregular - but I'm 52 so it's kind of expected. But I also have an atypical uterine issue that now needs medical treatment. If it doesn't come back for July 1st make an appt with your doc - better to get it checked out and have one less thing to stress about. ;o)

My OB has always told me to not go longer than 3 months without a period.
