My 8yr daughter was diagnosed with strep throat 3 weeks ago, she was given amoxicillan, she had a bad allergic reaction by the second day. or at least that what we thought was going on. She has had this bad RED rash all over her neck, stomach and back for 3 wks nows. very itchy!!! her neck and armpits are very sore too and she has little lumps maybe due the infection and her lymoh nodes are swollen. this past weekend her skin started peeling, she is still red but peeling like a really bad sunburn. the hives or bumps are now all over her hands and fingers which are swollen now too. the rash is now moving down her legs and she now has bumps on her feet. the doctor is now thinking maybe scartlett fever which can be from the strep throat. has anyone had a child have scartlett fever and does this sound common with scartlett fever??? any help or advice would be great. thanks

UPDATE - she did finish a RX of Zithro for the strep throat. The dr order A LOT of tests. So far so good. But they said she had mono before the strep, and giving amoxicillin to someone who has mono is bad.... they get a really bad rash. They are also saying that the severe case of scarlet fever can be attributed to having mono and the reaction from the amoxicillin... She is still very itchy, red and peeling like crazy. The tests for liver, kidneys and a lot of other stuff has come back ok. That was great news. they are waiting for a few more tests. I will keep posted.

What can I do next?

One of my daughters had scarlett fever when she was 5 years old and this sounds very similar but I don't think the rash kept spreading, was mainly on the trunk of her body, and yes, the fingers and toes peel with Scarlett Fever. She was very sick for some time even though on antibiotics and this can affect the heart and other side effects so I would take my daughter to the doctor for a complete evaluation of how she's doing with the strep and rash and Scarlett Fever right away. It is a serious thing and not something to mess around with.

D., please take your child to the ER.

The Doctor only 'thinking' it might be Scarlet Fever, is not a 'diagnosis.'

Strep Throat, can cause a host of different symptoms... not only a sore throat. Try Google searching it. I did that before.

Take her BACK to the Doctor, or the ER... and get her seen.
She is swelling and her skin is peeling... and has lumps and bumps all over.

I would, take her to the ER... and have her seen by a Doctor there. Since your Pediatrician, is NOT helping nor doing anything.
Do it today... because, a Doctor needs to SEE... her bodily symptoms.

IF Strep Throat and Scarlet fever... is not treated, it can cause VERY serious illness.

You NEED to take her to the ER. ASAP.
These symptoms are not good... and there is no point in trying to guess at it.
Your child needs treatment and a formal diagnosis... before she gets worse and/or the Strep/Scarlet Fever affects the rest of her body and/or organs.

I would def take her back into the dr. The rash should be going away over 3 weeks instead of getting worst. Does she still feel ill (besides the rash?)

When my son had strep throat a few months ago, the same thing happened to him, but not to the extent your daughter has it. The doctor said scarlett fever as well and the rash cleared up on it's own.

Hang in there and I hope your daughter feels better soon!

Its scarlatina... if she has no fever.... if she has a fever its scarlet fever.
My son is a carrier of strep and normally shows no symptoms of it ( no sore throat, swollen glands etc since its in his body all the time, that's how the Dr's described it since he was 2... now 11) and jumps right to scarlatina. Its exactly how you are describing it. Take her back and they will give her a different type of antibiotics.

Yes, this is scarlet fever. Get to a doctor ASAP and go for the most aggressive possible treatment. I've seen scarlet fever, though I was never involved in the treatment. The child made a full recovery.

Good luck and a speedy recovery to all.

Have you tried some Benadryl? Did the doctor actually see the rash? If not she should be seen. I have never experienced Scarlet Fever so I don't know. If it was a reaction to the meds some steriods and benadryl should help it.

It sounds like it could be a bad case of Scarlet Fever and your doctor should be consulted right away. It can lead to further complications.

My daughter gets the rash everytime she gets strep - sometimes it's her only symptom. It NEVER has been as bad as what you are describing.....it's just some red patches and they don't bother her.
My son had a virus induced allergic reaction to amox a few years ago and it was horrible! Sounds much more like what you are describing. He was covered with red bumps/splotches. His lips swelled and cracked and he was itchy. He never peeled though - that sounds very bad.
I'm no doctor, but this sounds very serious. Please stay close to the doctors and the ER. With my sons reaction they said to watch for problems breathing (due to swelling) and spots on his eyes.

This sounds very serious. It does sound like scarlet fever but it sounds like a very serious case of it. Has the doctor seen her? I urge you to talk with him right away.

I had scarlet fever as a child and remember the rash and being uncomfortable. I've had strep throat as an adult with an accompanying rash. Your daughter's symptoms sound much more serious.

it could seriously be a response to the medications. Scarlet fever is due to a undiagnosed and untreated strep...you said she had medication. I assume they put her on something different after the initial reaction to amoxicillan. Anyhow, there is a skin condition called Stephen Johnson syndrome that some get when their liver is unable to handle either the medication or the toxins that result when the medication kills the bacteria they are prescribed for. Definitely go back to the dr. and demand attention. if you can't get it from him, go to a different one!

I sure hope you took her to the ER or Immediate Care already! Scarlet fever is nothing to be messed with - if that it what it is - and she'll likely need to be isolated. (not sure if they still do that - my brother had scarletina many years ago cause he didn't want to get a shot and didn't tell mom his throat hurt ...ended up stuck in bed for a week)

I sure HOPE she was not given any more Amox after the possible reaction! I'm allergic to that stuff! If the Amox was stopped, was she given any other antibiotic?
