Strange Virus? Form of Stomach Flu? or What?

The school nurse called me on Thursday at 1:00 to say my daughter was in her office not feeling well. She had a bad headache, and a bit of a stomachache and was very hot, but did not have a fever. I picked her up. She seemed a bit off, but by the evening had eaten dinner, done her homework and was only complaining of the headache. Friday morning, she woke up feeling OK. She said her head hurt just a tiny bit. No fever. I gave her Motrin and sent her to school. At 12:00, the nurse called saying my daughter was very upset and saying she was going to throw up. Again, I went and picked her up. Still no fever, just the nausea and headache. I brought her home and she felt better for a couple of hours, then yucky again. She started really feeling nauseous before bed last night and was up half the night on the verge of vomiting, but never did...And this is how it's been. She feels nauseous for awhile, then better, then another wave hits. She felt good this morning when she first woke up, and I though we were over the worst of it, but now feels like throwing up again, but can't. What the heck is this? In my almost 12 years of mothering, this has been one of the strangest viruses I've seen. I want her to throw up and get it out, but it's not happening. Has anyone else seen this?

What can I do next?

I would get her to the ped and have a strep test done. I really would. My kids have had strep with NO fever, no sore throat, and a nauseated stomach. It's an unusual presentation for strep, but still strep.

Hope she's better real soon.

Take her to the Doctor.

Being sick does not always have to be accompanied by a fever.
I work at a school.
I have sent kids to the health room for symptoms like that.
And though some kids do not actually, throw up, they are sick.
My son has had that.
I kept him home.

And yes, Strep can cause stomach nausea.
And yes, hormones can do that too, in a Tween.
So anyway, go to the Doctor.

Is your daughter hydrated enough?

How old is she? I'm wondering if it's hormonal... maybe she's prepping for her first period?

Added: the nausea without actual vomiting, combined with headache, but no fever, definitely lends to the possibility of hormones... poor little thing, I hope she's better very soon :( try a combo of Tylenol and Advil along with caffeine if the headache begins to get out of hand.

She could be having a migraine headache. Her symptoms sound very much like my daughter has had several times. She started getting them at age 9. Migraines are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. It is not unlikely that one could last for several days.

If it is this, rest in a darkened quiet room for several hours is the only way I know to address this. My daughter also benefitted by drinking water, lemon-lime soda, and sometimes a drink with some caffeine in it (iced tea or a 1/2 can of Mountain Dew). Hunger seemed to make them worse, so she's gotten better about eating protein for breakfast and lunch. And Advil is our go to OTC remedy.

Migraines can be triggered by the start of puberty, or kids who have been having them can find relief with puberty, so hormones seem to play a role in migraines. I have women friends who would have a migraine with every period, or would realize they were pregnant because they had a migraine.

She should get checked by a doctor.
It could be strep.
It could be flu
It could be low blood sugar
It could be a bladder infection
It could be a kidney infection
It could be a reaction of a food she has eaten.

It could be nerves. It could be puberty. It could be a throat infection (actually my daughter had a lot of these same symptoms and when I took her to the Dr she has a severe throat infection. She had never once complained of her throat hurting. It could be the Norovirus. It could be a dairy sensitivity. It COULD be almost anything .

I am guessing that you have already made her a Dr.'s appointment and that this question really is just looking for support and not a medical opinion.

It sucks when our kids are sick. Hopefully the Dr will be able to give you the answer and your daughter will be feeling better soon.

I think there re definitely some funky viruses going around this year so it's very possibly a virus. But also have you considered any emotional link? When I was 9-12 years old, if I got nervous or anxious I would feel nauseous and then feeling nauseous would make me nervous, and exacerbate the feeling. Took a few years for my parents and I to figure this out because I didn't realize the cycle. You daughter prob just has a bug but thought I'd throw this out there for you just in case it might help. Hope she's feeling better fast!

My first thought was could be strep, as the others have suggested. Me and my kids always had typical strep symptoms when we got it (sore throat, headache, swollen glands and fever), but I knew that kids especially can have nausea as a symptom. About three years ago when my youngest was 11 he had strep and his first symptom was nausea, although he did actually vomit once. The sore throat and a low grade fever developed later.

My first guess is migraine; second guess is sinus infection. Take her to the pediatrician.

Hubby is doing this too. It's just a thing going around. I had a massive headache the other day and it was making me nauseous. I didn't have any other symptoms.

I'd just go about my business. She should be fine by morning.
