Strange Rash - Cleveland,OH

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has had this weird rash on her chin for about 2 weeks now. I was thinking it might be eczema, because she has it on her butt. So I tried to use some of her cream on her chin, and it worked at first, but it's still not completely gone. I was thinking about calling her doctor, but he might just say what I already suspected. Who knows! So what do you think I should do? Do you think it might be eczema? And how would she get it on her chin all of a sudden?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well the other day, I had put more of her eczema cream on her chin, and now her rash is going away. So I didn't have to call her ped at all. But if it does come back, then I'll call the doc. but I'm not too concerned any more. Thank you all for your suggestions, and god bless.

Definitally call the doctor, or better yet make an appointment. Eczema creams contain steroids, and you should never use them on children unless specifically told so by the doctor, and if they do say it's ok, the amount that you use is crucial. My kids (2yrs and 4yrs) both have severe eczema with cysting, and we used eczema cream for only 4 days, and the dermatologist said that is enough time for the medicine, and as preventitive maintenance we use Eucerin every night before bed with the skin wet. Sounds more like maybe a reaction or something. But steroids are nothing to screw around with, so I would say go to the doc. And not just the regular pediatrician, an actual dermatologist. It's better to err on the side of safety than trying to self medicate. Hope this helps! Take care.

Hi A....
Let me save you some grief. My son developed eczema at an early age of 2 months. I took him to the pediatrician, then to the dermatologist 2 times and then after prescriptions and shoulder shrugs, I desperately seeked the internet for help. I ran across a product called FreeDerm and it has taken the eczema away. Its not just for eczema, but for dermatitis, etc. Please take a few minutes, look at the website, photos, etc. See if this will work...I depend on it for my son now and he's been itch free ever since. www.freederm.com Good luck!

Does she still use a pacifier? Somethimes this will cause a rash. If you have some hydrocortisone cream you can use a small amt to the area twice a day. If it doesn't clear up take her to the doctor. L.

A.,
It's hard to tell without seeing it.

I do have eczema myself and I use an over the counter bath oil. It is the ONLY thing that has helped mine...and mine has been VERY severe. The product is all natural and safe for newborns. I purchase it online and it has been a WONDERFUL thing in my life. I buy it a gallon at a time, and it lasts about 2 years. A gallon is $50....but a perscription is $30 and lasts barely a month...so it's well worth it. You can also buy smaller bottles.

RoBathol is the product.

Blessings.

Where on her butt is this rash? I would definatly call her doctor. Could be a yeast infection or some kind of bacterial problem that would need antibiotics. I treat rashes with A&D ointment here. It always works.

A good resource for you is the advice nurse at your pediatrician's office. You may have to leave a message and have them call you back, but they usually have good suggestions because they hear everything! They may give you a few things to try, or they may suggest to bring her in, but at least you will have avoided a trip if it wasn't needed. My daughter had eczema on her back a few months ago, and the doctor told me to just put eucerin cream (or generic of) on it. I did, and it went away in a few days. Good luck.

Hey-
I have 2 eczema ridden children! Does the chin look like little bumps? If so, my kids get it all of the time. You know, they drool so much and with feeding theselves their little faces get very irritated. It could even be the change in weather that is doing it. Kids skin is just so delicate. Try Aquaphore(SP?). Change her bath soap to dove. Keep the area dry.
See if those things work. They have for us.
Good luck!

I'm a strong believer in checking with the doctor. As someone already suggested--speak with the nurse in the office first. My daughter had a rash on her bottom and it worked it's way up to her belly. The doctor gave me a prescription and it was the only thing that worked. It was gone in two days.

I have eczema. When I was 16 thats when we found out that i had this, it started on my hands and then from there it was all over my boby. This is something you might think about taking in her into the doctor for. they have all types of diffrent meds for this now. If this is what she has she will have it the rest of her life. I found that as long as i dont stress out about thigs then mine will stay under control. But i would take her into the doctor. hope things work out for you.

My 3 year old has eczema and you need to go to your ped, have them diagnose it, then get a referral to a dermatologist. Even though we don't need referrals for our insurance, I preferred a recommendation .

There are a lot of different creams, advice, precautions, etc...for eczema.

Oh, and my daughter's started out very small and would quickly go away, but now it can get pretty bad and I am glad I have the necessary tools to deal with it.

I would definitely talk to her doctor just to be sure, but here is what I found. My son kept getting an area of irritation on his chin which I asked the doctor about. My mom thought it looked like eczema though I had never seen it. He said it was nothing to worry about so I just tried different things and nothing seemed to help. Or it would seem to get better for a day and then be back. He was in daycare 4 days a week and one day we took a long weekend so he was away from daycare for a few days. It cleared up by the 3rd day and when he went back to daycare on Monday it came back. I spoke to his provider and she couldn't think of anything and thought it was just a coincidence. I didn't. It finally was on his chin and around the sides of his mouth. I had asked the doctor several times more with the same response. She swore it wasn't her fault and at one point it was nearly bleeding. Bottom line, we removed him from her care, it cleared up within a couple days and has not been back since. I think he was reacting to whatever soap or detergent she used or she was using baby wipes to clean the kids up. Your daughter may just have a sensitivity to something though it will be hard to determine just what that may be. I will say, Johnson & Johnson makes an all natural cheek balm that seemed to help my son quite a bit but we didn't find that until near the end of our little escapade. Good luck and please let us know what ends up working for you!

If you have let her take a bath with you or have used the same washcloth it may be a yeast infection. I know that might sound funny but it can happen. A friend of mine let her daughter take a bath with her and within days she had a rash on her face and butt. The dr. said it was a yeast infection and prescribed a cream that took it right away. Even though you may not show signs of one, we still have an amount of yeast in our bodies which could cause an infection for her.

With rashes, unless I knew what they were, I always consult the doctor with my 3-year old. He had a rash for a while and the doctor gave me aquaphor with a very small amount of hydrocortison cream in and said it was safe to use on dry skin and stuff to. It is by far the best on rashes. With insurance we get a pretty decent size tub for $10...used only on small spots last about 6 months.
