Strange Kid! (Sleep Habits)

my husband and i recently got a nursery camera with night vision to keep an eye on our son. (we're not paranoid, it was a gift.) he's always been a great sleeper, goes down without a fuss, sleeps all night, etc. it's so wierd though, last night we got him his new "big boy" bed (toddler bed), so i was doubly curious to watch him as he fell asleep to make sure he didn't crawl out of it. he didn't....in fact he sat there with his thumb in his mouth, sitting up in bed, for probably thirty minutes before he fell asleep. just staring out into space...looking around him...once or twice he would pull towards him or push away a blanket...it was so wierd! i guess it's what we do as adults, only we do it laying down. he did it in his crib too but for some reason it just struck me as odd today.

then this morning, i heard him start to jabber the slightest bit and went to check the camera, to see if he was still in bed, and he was, sitting up with his thumb in his mouth, doing the same thing. he had quit jabbering and was just sitting there, again. is this normal? during the day he is SO active, talking nonstop and running everywhere...it's just wierd to see him so still. i think he was just still waking up as i can hear him jabbering a LOT more as i type this.

anyone else with nursery cameras see their kid right before or after they're asleep, do the same thing?? i don't guess i know what kids normally do at this time, since i'm not usually watching it...lol.

What can I do next?

Carrie,
It's always good hear when a mom loves her children so much and call herself blessed,(and husband). I think maybe getting used to a toddler bed is kind of unusual for him. Boys have have a huge imagination. My son role played forever, until 4th grade. Keep watching him, unless things get really strange, I wouldn't be to worried. If it got stranger, can you record it? Just a thought.

We bought a video monitor when my daughter was a little over a year old. I was surprised to see her little sleep habits too! I had always thought she went to sleep pretty quickly (because we couldn't hear her before) but found that she actually lays in her crib for quite a long time before she goes to sleep. She rolls around, plays with her stuffed animals, stands up, sits down, etc...I am sure his behaviors are normal. I would be curious if you see this same thing repeat from him. Maybe he's always sat up until he was really tired? Or maybe it was the strangeness of a new bed. I think it's great that he stayed in the bed and slept the full night.

I think it sounds cute and he's just figuring out what makes him comfortable. Be glad he's not getting out every minute. He probably likes his new bed.

my niece never got out of her toddler bed. It had side rails on it and I guess they made her feel like she was trapped like the crib and just never tried to get out. she would also sit up and jabber and play but didn't realize for at least a year that she could just climb out of that bed on her own. Her parents never complained because she wouldn't get up until they came in the room to get her out of the bed so they didn't have to worry about her not staying in her bed for naps or bedtime. If your son's bed has side rails on it then he may not realize that he can get out so just plays in his bed until you come and get him out.

When we put out now 8 year old and our now 14 year old in toddler beds they did virtually the same thing. The younger one (girl) would sit one the bed holding her toes and you could see that the was getting drowsy. She would eventually lay down, grab her blanket, and go to sleep. Sometimes she would jabber and be vocal, but she always stayed on her bed. My older one (boy)would sit there, sucking his thumb, holding his blanket, until he would lay down and fall asleep. It usually took both of them about 30 minutes. Once they got a little older they eventually just layed down when they got into bed. I think it was their way of wanting some sleep, but not wanting to give it up.
In the morning they would both wake up and make noise to let me know they were awake and I would go get them. It was not until they were a little older would they get out of bed themselves and some and get them. Now that the are older, they have very different personalities so I don't think this behavior is fitting for one kid or another. My daughter has a calm personality, (artist)and my son is active an plays sports.
Both were put in a toddler bed at 18 months to see if they were ready, and fortunately they both were.
Congratulations on the big boy bed.

He must like his bed since he's not getting out to play (my oldest played until he passed out at that age). I would say he is 'zoning'/staring out into space before he passes out. Everyone 'zones' out, especially when they are tired. It's probly just his way of falling asleep or fighting sleep!

God Bless!

I would say you're a very lucky mom! How wonderful he adapted so well and slept through the night! Everyone has their own way of digesting the day and falling asleep. I know when something exciting happens to me, I'll lay there and think about it before I drift off. He is surrounded by the excitement (and strangeness) of a new bed. I can only imagine what's going through his head!
Be happy that he has mastered the skill of getting himself to sleep and developed the ability to comfort himself in a strange/new environment! Sounds like a wonderful little boy!

Hi Carrie,

The thought that comes to mind is the todler bed is new to him. He's doesn't seem to be affraid, but curious. I have noticed when my son is introduced to something new and he isn't quite sure what to make of it, he behaves a bit differently. It will take some time before your son gets used to his new bed. Just like when our environment changes, it takes time for us to adjust too. Hope this helps. Take care.

From my perspective, all is normal. He may have been seeing his guardian angel(s).

I really think he is just enjoying his new "big boy" experience. He is probably pretty fascinated by it. He sounds like a great kid to me !

My older little man did that, he just wasn't used to the vast emptiness of his new big boy bed. He'll get used to it.
