Milk has been shown to make some kids constipated, try taking Dairy out of her diet for 3 weeks and see if that makes a difference. Most kids that young like vanilla soy milk or the chocolate milk.
We've been working on potty training with our 3 1/2 year old for months now. She's mastered going pee in the potty, but we've been having major struggles with poop. We've struggled with constipation for a long time with her and now she's holding her stools. We've beefed up her diet with just about every source of fiber imaginable and limit binding foods. She's gone a full week without having a stool, before. We've tried prune juice, magnesium, and when it's really bad and with guidance from our pediatrician laxatives. We had another baby, who is almost a year old now. Any advice?

Hi J., I have a 10 month old who has already struggled with constipation (mostly from adding solids). When he had not gone number two for about 5 days I gave him Aloe juice in a sippy cup (after consulting his MD). The kind I get is strawberry flavored. Not only did he love it he went to the bathroom within 2 hours. I have used it a couple of times with great results. My sister has a 3 1/2 yr old boy who really struggled with constipation. She also has used the Aloe juice and also added Omega III fish oil capsules. Many health food stores sell the Omega III's flavored for kids (so they don't get the fishy taste). They also usually sell Aloe juice. I get the flavored aloe juice from marketamerica.com/swalthers under "Health and Nutrition." It is called Ultimate Aloe Juice (only get strawberry/kiwi the other flavors are not kid-friendly). Hope this helps-good luck. :-)
J.,
I feel for you. My son is 4 1/2 and only now are we tentatively saying that he's finally potty trained. We had some completely understandable set-backs on the way. The last one being the birth of his little sister last year. We didn't have a problem with him being constipated at all, or holding his stools; he just flat refused to poop in the toilet. What solved it for me was being able to sit with him and talk about going potty. I asked him if there was anything at all that scared him about going potty. When he tentatively nodded yes, I continued to ask questions and found out that we have monsters living in out toilet that try to get him when he poops.
We arranged a small IKEA step near the toilet so he could climb up onto the seat and squat while he pooped. Once we got the placement of the step right, and he could see what was happening below him there were no more poops in his pants. That was about a month ago now.
Talk to your daughter, see if there's a reason that she's not pooping in the toilet. It could be something simple like with my son. Just make sure everyone is calm and relaxed when you talk with her, and be ready to listen to her answers.
Hope this helps,
Melissa
Miralax every day in his bottle of juice milk or what ever liquid he is drinking. EVERY DAY,,, could be for months until they relize it doesnt hurt to poop. We have achieved one poop in the toilet so far, He is almost completely trained in the day to the toilet but still wears his pull up at night
I responded to another post on this and I don't have time to go into all the detail I did there...it is just a few posts up from yours. Anyway...it is so important to address this now. Your daughter's colon will expand to accommodate more an more stool thus making the process even harder. If I knew then what I learned after TWO years of anguish, I could have saved myself a lot of grief...I literally lost the joy of motherhood for a season. Anyway...we gave our son enimas every day for two weeks to keep his colon clear and allow it to shrink to normal size. This sounds extreme and it felt like it, but after that, things like prunes and miralax could work. As impacted as he was, nothing would. PM me if you have questions and I'll share more. Good for you for looking for answers around you...most doctors don't take it seriously enough and just throw drugs at it.
hmmm. this just happened with my friends boy in Wasilla, I will have to check with her what eventually happened! I think she put a diaper on him so that he would go poop, and I think they did the prune juice, fiber stuff also. I will have to ask her son conquered the fear of the toilet and get back with you.
There is a book called Everybody Poops that you may find helpful - designed to read to your child.
Hi, my daughter went through a similiar situation when she was younger. We tried EVERYTHING including miralax with no real results. What finally worked for us was mineral oil. I just put 1 to 2 tablespoons in some yogurt and mixed it up. If it doesn't work the first time do it the next day. Since then she has been regular but if she goes a day without pooping, I just give her a little mineral oil and it has worked everytime. Good luck!
Hello J.\''/
May I suggest more water and eating oatmeal for breakfast? Prune juice is great too. Just keep on giving fiber to your kids. Your child should be having a bowel movement everyday without any kind of stress. So, eating a good hot bowl of oatmeal is a great choice for breakfast. I knew a little girl who had a hard time with her BM and I felt so sad for her. It was like she was in some type of pain. This was years ago, she may be in her late teens - early 20's. At the time, I had no clue as to what that little girl was going through.
So, oatmeal is great! Lots of water too. I strongly suggest that you seek a nutritionist for you and your family, to learn about all kinds of things about foods. It helps me and my family.
Good luck and
Take Care!
Canned mandarin oranges do it for my three kids EVERY time. Wow. Do those things go RIGHT through 'em!
Hi I have been in the medical field for years. working alot with Geatric patients. And the thing that worked the best with out them getting in any discomfort was to feed them gummy bears ( Sugar free) seemed to work the best. have fun.
What our pediatrician told us is that you have to make the stools loose enough that they can't hold it. We give our daughter Miralax every day in her milk (with some ovaltine). Once they have mastered going poop in the potty, you can back off. Best of luck to you.
