Stomach Aches - Newton,IA

For the last few days both of my kids (girl 9 boy 7) say they have stomach aches. Neither of them have any flu like symptoms and both of them complained only right before bed time so I thought they were doing it maybe for attention. When they came home from school today both of them complained again (not at the same time and not in the same room). I asked if either of them have pooped today (sorry gross) and both said no. Should I assume that maybe they are constipated? They really have no other symptoms for me to believe it is anything else. I have honeslty never had this issue before. I can not think of anything that they would have eaten to make them so constipated but you never know. How do I treat it or do you have any other idea of what it may be. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the input. I just kept and eye on them but everything seemed to disappear on its own.

My son recently had the worst stomach flu ever. The stomach pain actually started 3-4 days ahead of the symptoms. I would keep an eye on them.

I just talked to my daughter's pediatrician today for the same reason. She's pooping once every day, but she has a hard time going, and lots of tummy aches. She's 3 1/2 and he said to give her 1/2 a cap of Miralax every single day. If that doesn't work he said I can increase it to 3/4 capfull. Since your kids are older there may be dosage information right on the bottle for 6-12 year olds. He also said that once the problem clears up, you can give kids miralax every day or every other day, or just as needed, for years if need be. Which means it is very, very safe for them. Good luck!

Sorry to say but the stomach bug is going around. I would just try to keep them hydrated and not feed them anything too heavy.

I'm sure it's a bug. It could be just the start of it or this could be the extent of it. One of my daughters usually gets a stomach ache for a few days (and sometimes a fever along with it, sometimes not) when she has been exposed to some sort of flu virus. She rarely gets the full-blown bug.

We had the worst stomach bug go through our home and my stomach hurt for a few days before I actually got sick so I wouldn't assume that they are constipated they could be but they could be coming down with something. Also stomach ache is a common symptom of strep.

If they have not gone I usually give my kids an apple or two and that almost always takes care of the problem or a few prunes when nothing else works miralax check the dosing with your pharmacist. If they go and their stomaches still hurt I would guess they are coming down with something. I hope they are just constipated because I would not wish that stomach bug on my worst enemy.

2 of my kids do this when they have not been for a few days , they are not necessarily constipated but they just have not been for a day , and then they say there stomach hurts , then they go and the evidence is enough to know why they had a stomach ache!

Could be a stomach bug. Could also be strep. My kids always say their bellies hurt when they eat spaghetti.... just watch it for another day, keep checking their temps.

Constipation...definately! We had the exact same thing...and my kids poop daily. Buy Miralax (S.'s Club is cheapest). A cap full in any liquid except milk (it gels up) and they won't even taste it. Do it for two-three weeks just to be certain! The stuff is amazing and we still pull it out for our kids. Constipation is very common in kids this time of year because they don't sweat or get hot so they aren't drinking as many fluids. we had our kids on Miralax for a whole month and all is well...and it won't harm them if it isn't constipation.

My daughter went through this last year for about a month. We didn't think she was constipated because she had a bm almost every day. We took her to the doctor and they did all kinds of tests including xray and did find she was horribly backed up. The remedy was Miralax. The doctor said to use up to a full cap full with a full glass of water/milk etc. I used 1/2 cap full every day for 7 days straight and that did the trick. We still use the Miralax on occasion but she has been much better.

If you think it is constipation I would try it with the kids. My daughter says she can't taste it at all in her chocolate milk and it is very mild in terms of getting the system going again. If this doesn't do the trick see your doctor.

P.S. Bananas are a big cause of constipation...The schools seem to be serving a lot of these lately too.
